Introduction to contentious topics

{{ivmbox | image = Commons-emblem-notice.svg |imagesize=50px | bg = #E5F8FF | text = You have recently edited a page related to '''the Arab–Israeli conflict ↗''', a topic designated as '''contentious ↗'''. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as ''contentious topics''. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days ↗, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics ''procedures'' you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard ↗ or you may learn more about this contentious topic here ↗. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{tl|Ctopics/aware}} template.
}}

To edit in the Israeli-Palestinian topic area on Wikipedia ↗ accounts must be at least thirty days old and have at least 500 edits ↗. This includes editing talk pages, with the sole exception being for edit requests ↗. IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 22:17, 8 October 2024 (UTC)

Standard Notice: Syrian Civil War

''It does '''not''' imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.''
You have shown interest in the Syrian Civil War ↗ and ISIL ↗. Due to past disruption in this topic area, the community has authorised uninvolved administrators to impose contentious topics restrictions ↗—such as editing restrictions ↗, bans ↗, or blocks ↗—on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies ↗, expected standards of behaviour ↗, or the page-specific restrictions ↗, when making edits related to the topic.
For additional information, please see the guidance on these sanctions ↗. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

As a note, per these community-authorized general sanctions, there is a one-revert rule in place for all articles related to the Syrian Civil War and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, broadly construed ↗. This means that an editor in this area may make no more than one revert per article per 24 hour period ↗, unless an obvious exception applies ↗. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 21:26, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Notice of Arbitration Enforcement noticeboard discussion

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a report involving you at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement ↗ regarding a possible violation of an Arbitration Committee ↗ decision. The thread is '''Regioncalifornia ↗'''. Thank you. ~ Jenson (SilverLocust 💬) 21:11, 31 August 2025 (UTC)

Notice of a logged contentious topic warning

{{Ivmbox
|2=Commons-emblem-hand.svg
|imagesize=50px
|1=The following sanction now applies to you:

{{Talkquote|1=You are warned not to make more than one revert (as defined in WP:3RR ↗, subject to the normal exceptions ↗) per page relating to the Arab–Israeli conflict ↗ per 24 hours.}}

You have been sanctioned per this arbitration enforcement thread ↗.

This sanction is imposed in my capacity as an uninvolved administrator ↗ under the authority of the Arbitration Committee ↗'s decision at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Index/Palestine-Israel articles ↗ and the contentious topics procedure ↗. This sanction has been recorded in the log of sanctions ↗. If you do not comply with this sanction, you may be blocked ↗ for an extended period, by way of enforcement of this sanction—and you may also be made subject to further sanctions.

You may appeal this sanction using the appeal process ↗. I recommend that you use the arbitration enforcement appeals template ↗ if you wish to submit an appeal to the arbitration enforcement noticeboard. Let me know here if anything above is unclear to you. ~ Jenson (SilverLocust 💬) 05:07, 31 August 2025 (UTC)

}}

:Hi @SilverLocust, I hope you're doing well. I'm a bit confused and not entirely sure how the sanction works. Is it limited to the warning posted on my talk page, or does it imply any specific restrictions? Would anything change if I chose to appeal it? I apologize if these are basic questions, I'm still learning how these procedures work. I truly appreciate your time and guidance. Regioncalifornia (talk) 15:29, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
::The only difference from a regular warning is that it is listed at the Wikipedia:Arbitration enforcement log ↗ so you can appeal ↗ to have it removed from there (though I doubt an appeal would succeed given the standards of review for contentious topic appeals, that it's just a warning, and that you don't dispute that there was a 1RR violation). ~ Jenson (SilverLocust 💬) 17:10, 8 September 2025 (UTC)

Possible 1RR violation

Hi, I realized after I posted it that the issue mentioned on the 2026 Iran war talk page here ↗ might be a 1RR violation, would you self revert? The topic is open on the talk page to form consensus. ScrubbedFalcon (talk) 15:12, 6 March 2026 (UTC)

:@ScrubbedFalcon could you point out how this would be a 1RR violation? As far as I remember, I haven't reverted anything in this article before, even beyond the 24-hour period. And even if I wanted to revert it now, I couldn't, since it has already been edited by someone else. Regioncalifornia (talk) 15:23, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
::My understanding is that because the initial inclusion was BOLD, reverting the removal is a 1RR violation (I think I read an essay on this somewhere, but I can't find it right now, but see for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:PermanentLink/1330753766#IOHANNVSVERVS ↗ which I found in the arb enforcement log), but again, I said might for a reason, I could be wrong about that. Obviously not holding it against you that someone else removed it in the interim, I tagged them in the conversation on the article talk page. ScrubbedFalcon (talk) 15:48, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
:::Since someone else already removed it, there's no need to self-revert. Regioncalifornia (talk) 16:05, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
::::Yeah, I didn't see that it was removed before I add this to your talk page. Apologies if there was confusion on that. ScrubbedFalcon (talk) 16:10, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
