Introduction to contentious topics
{{ivmbox | image = Commons-emblem-notice.svg |imagesize=50px | bg = #E5F8FF | text = You have recently edited a page related to '''India ↗, Pakistan ↗, and Afghanistan ↗''', a topic designated as '''contentious ↗'''. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as ''contentious topics''. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics ''procedures'' you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard ↗ or you may learn more about this contentious topic here ↗. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{tl|Ctopics/aware}} template.
}} Bookku (talk) 01:51, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi RogerYg -- I just saw your response on my Talk page ... I wanted to be sure you understood where I am coming from. :::''Examples of past discussions:''
:::I agree with Str1977 (talk) on this issue that BLP is mainly to prevent questionable "potentially libelious claims". It sets higher standards for sources used in BLP article to avoid controversial slandering claims. The TOI ref is not making any slandering claim, rather it helps to counter such claims. Also, we are not using TOI as a stand alone ref, rather as supporting other WP:RS refs, so its use can be justified. Further, it helps and to bring NPOV balance. Thanks. RogerYg (talk) 15:00, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
:::''You're both wrong. BLP states, Be very firm about the use of high-quality sources. Sanctions apply. --Hipal (talk) 17:28, 14 December 2024 (UTC)''
:::Can any one editor decide which reference is superior and delete other references from WP:RS sources without broader discussion and consensus? These were some of the issues being discussed. Meanwhile, I think some balance has been restored in the article. (I will likely be taking a break from this page for some time per WP:DISENGAGE). Thanks. RogerYg (talk) 03:35, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
:::But, when we found High Quality Reliable sources such as The Washington Post and Politico with similar relevant content about change in Gabbard's beliefs such as on homosexuality per WP:BLPBALANCE, sadly that is also being opposed. Thanks. RogerYg (talk) 11:04, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
:::''You're just continuing to work from assumptions. The fact is that this article isn't about Gabbard's beliefs. Pretending otherwise in order to rationalize the addition of content is a POV violation. --Hipal (talk) 18:03, 17 January 2025 (UTC)''

::::{{tq|I have provided valid WP policies, such as WP:BLP and WP:NPOV that I think apply for my edits.}} Yes, you have. Suggestion for too much detail
@RogerYg Thanks for adding details in the section for "Influence on American culture & beliefs ↗". I noticed that there was too much detail with many WP:PUFFERY ↗ words, which I have cleaned up. You may want to read MOS:WTW ↗. Using such words unnecessarily increases the word count for the page and makes it difficult to read. Asteramellus (talk) 20:58, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
:Hi ,
:Thanks for discussing this. While I agree against using WP:PUFFERY ↗ words, often specific detalis are needed to justify content as WP:DUE ↗.
:Also, the issue here was not Pufferey, but providing the specific point to justify it's inclusion as WP:DUE ↗.
:The case of Wilbur award-winning Lisa Miller which is almost like Oscar for religion authors.
:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_Communicators_Council#Wilbur_Awards
:Problem was I removed Wilbur, also thinking of word count, which was incorrect.
:If Lisa Miller is just another author on religion, her point will not carry enough weight for its inclusion for Hindu Americans, and any editor can remove the content noting WP:UNDUE ↗
:Therefore, we have to find a balance between avoiding Puffery and justifying WP:DUE content. Thanks. RogerYg (talk) 04:42, 5 April 2025 (UTC)

Excessive citations
What is the point of adding ↗ the same New York Times source that is cited at the end of the sentence, again mid-sentence?
Mid-sentence citations should be generally avoided because they make the text hard to read. We use them only in exceptional circumstances, and they should never be multiple citataions. Please keep in mind that the general public things of the citations as a nuisance. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 18:38, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi @RogerYg, There is a section in Wikipedia Project Hinduism called "Open Tasks." The subset on Hindu mythology has some articles that are only 1 or 2 paragraphs and some that are literally just one sentence. Would you be interested in going through this list with me and expanding, deleting, or merging these articles to cross them off the "Open Tasks" list one by one? It definitely does not make sense to have articles on very minor figures of Hindu mythology that are so short. It would be more useful to add that same information in the context of the text or relevant myth article. Let me know in any case! Hemmingweigh (talk) 03:11, 16 June 2026 (UTC)
:Thanks for update. Yes, I will try to work on those.
:You can send me some specific short articles, and link to the project page. Thanks. RogerYg (talk) 17:26, 16 June 2026 (UTC)
::Hi @RogerYg, thanks so much for working with me on this. It is under "Open Tasks" in Wikipedia:WikiProject Hinduism ↗. Here is the link ↗ to the list of articles I mentioned. Maybe you can get started on Namas and Madravati and go from there? I think the content of the articles could be added to the Sakti Sangama Tantra and Mahabharata articles respectively and then a request could be made for these articles to be deleted. What do you think? Hemmingweigh (talk) 00:19, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
:::While I understand your point about many short articles or stubs, I like to think for the future, and we will keep getting more material and sources to expand most of them.
:::I am mostly not in favor of deleting them and merging them into already large articles, such as Mahabharata, which are already quite long. My reasoning is also based on difficult experience of adding new articles, as many don't get approved.
:::So, I will try to expand some articles, such as Namas (rishi). We can delete or merge only when there seems no scope for reliable sources. Thanks. RogerYg (talk) 07:38, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
::::Sure, that sounds good to me as well. Thanks so much! Hemmingweigh (talk) 02:11, 19 June 2026 (UTC)
