About the 1000 Destubbing Challenge

Hi Ross! I once again appreciate the work ethic you've been showing off while contributing to the 1000 Destubbing Challenge ↗, but having gone through some of your entries, I just don't think they qualify towards the general criteria.

Some of the articles you submitted had already been "de-stubbed" and reached a reasonable amount of readable prose (see Lucas Fernandes ↗ as an example), and there were a bunch of other pages where I couldn't even find your latest edits (including Jake O'Brien ↗ and Esmee Brugts ↗)...

I know that the challenge's page says that "All articles submitted here must be a minimum of 1.2 kb (1200 bytes) of readable prose", but sometimes the definition of WP:STUB ↗ can be a bit more complex, and I usually try to go past 5 kB of prose by myself. I think you should just keep the entries you extended to the point they overtook 5-6 kB (see Sota Kitano ↗ and Chasity Grant ↗); in my opinion, the other entries should either get removed, or at least you should give credit with the one user who ''actually'' did "de-stub" those pages. Oltrepier (talk) 22:02, 16 January 2025 (UTC)

:You know... of course we would all be happy to hit that thousand-article milestone as soon as possible, but we're not in a race against time to achieve it by any means, so let's just focus step by step on the articles we ''actually'' have the time and energy to take care of. : ) Oltrepier (talk) 22:21, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
::I was thinking this today - I have to agree with you completely. I've been focusing on quantity over quality - some of it is when I was learning Wikipedia (see my early Brazillian entries from around 400) and some of it are just talk page destubs that I claimed because I'm a workaholic and put a lot of pressure on myself xD - I'm happy with some of my articles I submitted (such as Sota Kitano) but I wish I could destub articles as well as you and Tkd!
::I'd like to offer that I either go through and remove some of the articles I've submitted, or ask Dr. Blofield to extend the challenge to 1,500 or something. I can do either :)
::Thank you for bringing this to me otherwise I wouldn't have thought to do this - I've put too much pressure on myself to work and it's come back to bite me xD - so thank you for letting me know, I appreciate it. RossEvans19 (talk) 23:23, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
:::Also, I wish I could understand how to use the tool that allows me to see if i've got more than 5-6 kb of prose, that would help xD RossEvans19 (talk) 23:25, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
::::Ok finally figured it out, gonna remove a few more! :) RossEvans19 (talk) 00:29, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
::::@RossEvans19 Do you mean this tool ↗? Take a look at the "Prose" section!
::::Also, on second thought, I've realized I made a bad blunder in my previous message: what I intended to say is that yes, a minimum of 1.5 kB of readable prose is good, but I think the articles look better if their ''total size'' overtakes 5-6 kB. I hope this helps! Oltrepier (talk) 11:51, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
:::::Ah that makes sense! Thank you for explaining :) And thank you again, I'm going to try and work on making better edits with less pressure on myself :) RossEvans19 (talk) 14:46, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
::::::You're very welcome! Oltrepier (talk) 20:11, 17 January 2025 (UTC)

A cookie for you

{{WikiCookie}} Hi RossEvans19, and thanks for your contributions. I wanted to tell you that I feel bad for inviting you into the discussion at the village pump yesterday only for you to get "jumped on". Accept this wikicookie as a token of my apologies. I do think you should take into consideration the criticism from editors that you're nominating a few too many articles to AfD, the rate at which you're nominating is a bit atypical. Even if these really are all non-notable articles, it's hard to know for sure without a thorough WP:BEFORE ↗, and it's probably better to not draw that sort of negative attention, yeah? I know you have good intentions, but maybe you might consider contributing to existing AfD discussions for now? Plenty of folks nominate new AfDs, not as many contribute to others. Just a thought. All the best, Kylemahar902 (talk) 20:38, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

:Hi Kyle, please don't feel bad, it's okay! I agree. I have been nominating too many at once. I've contributed to a few Afd discussions but I'm going to be quite busy and I don't know how much time I'll have for Wikipedia. Hope your doing well, I'm sorry I only saw this now, I didn't get the notification xD RossEvans19 (talk) 02:26, 26 February 2025 (UTC)

Keep your head up

Don't let WAID dissuade you from editing and AfD'ing articles you don't think meet standards. If they keep stirring shit, ignore them. <span style="color: #ad3e00;">Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs</span> <small><span style="color: #ad3e00;">talk</span></small> 13:17, 26 February 2025 (UTC)

The World Destubathon ↗

You are invited to participate in The World Destubathon. It's currently planned for June 16-July 13, partly due to me having hayfever during that period and not wanting to run it throughout July or August in the hotter summer and will be run then unless multiple editors object. There is currently $3338 going into it, with $500 the top prize. As 250 countries and entities is too much to patrol, entries will be by user, but there is $500 going into prizes for editors covering the most countries. Sign up if interested! ♦ <span style="font-variant:small-caps;color:#aba67e">''Dr. Blofeld''</span> 13:51, 28 May 2025 (UTC)

Wiki Class Assessment Request

Hi RossEvans19,

I have a favour to ask: I've been working on updating the Paul McGrath (footballer) ↗ article as I noticed the class was only listed as 'Start'. It's probably not ready for a full peer review yet but I'd greatly appreciate it if could you give it the once over and assess with a rating you think is appropriate. It seemed like a task you enjoyed and my request for an assesment on the WikiProject Football page has yet to bear fruit. My apologies if I'm mistaken and have a great day! ElfmanWriter (talk) 14:55, 17 October 2025 (UTC)

Hugh Dubberly

Hi Ross. I saw the note on your user page. Hope better days are ahead for you. I've gone through some tough times in the past and can sympathize.

I was writing regarding the AI-generated text tag that you added to Hugh Dubberly ↗. While I did use Grammarly to smooth out the grammar/sentence structure (my writing is sometimes awkweird ahaha), I found the reference articles by googling (there is a ton of stuff about him), and the article content is all human-assembled. I did lean more heavily on one of his bios for reference, but rewrote and cited to make sure there is no copyvio or plagiarism. Wondering what part(s) gave you the feeling that the article content is AI generated? Also, I thought it was more start-class than stub-class, but I'm sincerely appreciative that you took the time to review! UnkleFester (talk) 18:22, 13 March 2026 (UTC)

:Hi UnkleFester - thank you for your kind messages, I've been working on it recently :))
:With regards to the ai bit, it was the way the article looked with the many sub-sections and stuff like bullet points (from my experience AI likes to do that) - and regarding the class, it's definitely start - I just hate AI and sometimes add stub to ai articles so people will improve and remove the AI parts - however, as you took the time to tell me it's written by you, I'm going to remove the ai tag and upgrade it to start class! Best wishes, RossEvans19 (talk) 18:27, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
::Yeah I mostly copied the article structure from Bruce Mau ↗ with a dash of Neville Brody ↗, and I meant to put a lot more work into it before I put it "out there" but the Christmas holiday was at an end and I thought better do it or it will sit for a year in my user space. Was hoping someone who liked Apple history might pick it up and keep improving it. I met Dubberly at a conference a few months ago and went to look him up on wikipedia and couldn't believe there was no article. I thought better something than nothing. Totally appreciate your perspective on AI. Stay well! UnkleFester (talk) 19:00, 13 March 2026 (UTC)

Adding more information to AI tag

Hi! I noticed you've been adding some AI tags to articles recently. I really appreciate your help identifying these, and wanted to ask if you could also include relevant edits, or signs that tipped you off about an article (see the AI tag on this article Halomonas titanicae ↗).

Thanks again for your help! <span style="text-shadow: 2px 2px 20px lightskyblue, -2px -2px 20px lightskyblue;font-weight:bold;padding:2px;"><span style="color:hotpink">isha</span> <span style="color:navy">(talk)</span></span> 23:23, 13 March 2026 (UTC)

:I'll start doing that from now on! Thanks for asking :) RossEvans19 (talk) 23:24, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
::Thank you! I appreciate your work :) <span style="text-shadow: 2px 2px 20px lightskyblue, -2px -2px 20px lightskyblue;font-weight:bold;padding:2px;"><span style="color:hotpink">isha</span> <sup><span style="color:navy">(talk)</span></sup></span> 23:32, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
:::Hi - wanted to say first off that I really, truly, wholeheartedly appreciate your doing AI tagging/triage. It is very important and undervalued work to do for the project.
:::Others, however, do not find it to be important, and are warning that they will remove any AI-generated tags that do not also have a duplicate message in the talk page. Yes, I realize it's a waste of time. I am just the messenger here. I'm currently going back and doing this for existing tags. Gnomingstuff (talk) 01:33, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
::::Hi Gnomingstuff! Thank you for your kind message, I'll try to keep doing it - not just that, but you'll like to know this - when I came across your User page a while back, I saw what you wrote about vandalism, and so when I see vandalism in talk pages I remove it :)
::::It is so important to tag AI generated work because AI is taking away people's jobs - if someone writes an article poorly but they actually wrote it, we can help them fix it, but with some AI articles i've seen, there's so much to fix that it's just unsalvagable and must be TNTed.
::::Hope your doing well, thanks for the kind message again :) RossEvans19 (talk) 01:44, 8 May 2026 (UTC)

Content assessment

Hello RossEvans19, thanks for taking the time to assess articles. You appear to rate them indiscriminately as stub. Even if that is clearly not the case, such as 1966 Dutch cabinet fornation ↗ (imo). Wouldn't it be better to keep them unclassified, or perhaps use a tool that suggests a rating? Kind regards, Dajasj (talk) 22:51, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

:I'm sorry, this is absolutely not a stub - I'm trying to work through the backlog quickly (most of the Election articles are stubs) - thank you for taking the time to write the article :) RossEvans19 (talk) 22:52, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

The goal is to destub as many of our 475,000+ stubs for the Americas (from Alaska down to Chile) as possible.
