What is the user script for finding specific pieces of text?
For example, if I wanted to find and manipulate every instance of the wikitext <code>|year=</code> on a page, how would I do that in a userscript? <span style="font-family:Comic Sans MS;font-size:14px;color:#800080;">VidanaliK</span> (<span style="color:green">talk to me</span>) (<span style="color:blue">contributions</span> ↗) 23:36, 19 March 2026 (UTC)

: '''Simple answer:''' see https://www.w3schools.com/jsref/jsref_replace.asp
: '''General answer:''' Learn regex ↗. It's a mini-language for specifying search/replace strings. It is used in most programming languages, including the scripting language for making userscripts (JavaScript ↗). In addition to being used in programming, it is also supported by many programs as an advanced way to input search queries, so, in addition to supporting ordinary searches, they also let you specify searches written in regex, also known as "regular expressions ↗". For example, Wikipedia's wikitext editor lets you search with regular expressions (you have to check a box), and WikEd ↗, the advanced editor that can be installed from Preferences on Wikipedia, lets you search with ordinary search strings, and supports regex searches and search/replace as well; and so does AutoWikiBrowser ↗. Advanced file managers, like MultiCommander ↗, also support regex, and can be used for renaming files in batches. Regex searches are far more powerful than ordinary searches, and therefore, Regex is a basic skill all programmers and power users should know.
:: Here's a quick presentation of regex: https://faculty.kutztown.edu/schwesin/spring2023/csc310/lectures/JavaScript_RegExp.pdf
: '''Cutting edge answer:''' Since you are asking me, a human, I assume you haven't tried https://perplexity.ai yet. Not only can it answer questions about any programming language in seconds, you can ask it to write code in any programming language, and it will. If it can't write the whole userscript you want, it can at least write one section ("function") at a time.
: '''Hint:''' interview perplexity.ai on what it is and what it can do. During the interview, ask every question you can think of.
: Hope that helps.
: If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Sincerely, <span class="nowrap"> — ''The Transhumanist'' </span> 07:49, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
::Thanks for giving me the idea for Perplexity; after several fixes I figured out how to make the script I want. Thanks! <span style="font-family:Comic Sans MS;font-size:14px;color:#800080;">VidanaliK</span> (<span style="color:green">talk to me</span>) (<span style="color:blue">contributions</span> ↗) 01:41, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
::: {{ping|VidanaliK}} Things are changing fast in the AI world. Perplexity has crippled its free tier down to 2 prompts per session. But duckduckgo ↗ now has an AI called duck.ai ↗, which allows you to choose from 6 models in its free tier. The best of those is Anthropic's Claude Haiku 4.5, but it is not the default, so you have to select it. After you've done that, to get the best out of it, you click on "fast" and then click on "reasoning". duck.ai's "download chat" feature captures everything, including the model's chain-of-thought. One drawback is that Haiku sometimes decides not to search; you can prevent that problem by adopting the habit of starting your prompts with "Search for" or "Look up", or end the prompt with a search order.<br><br>But that's all old school, as a new paradigm of AIs has hit the mainstream...<br><br>Due to the Anthropic Claude Code agentic harness source code '''leak''' on March 31st, the whole world of AI has leaped forward. If you aren't very familiar with that, look up it and its impact. Haiku can help you research it. Make a timeline: it will blow you away. That source code represented billions of dollars in research and development, "gifted" to the world for free, allowing developers to create state-of-the-art AI apps that they never would have been able to afford to do. The impact has been and continues to be surreal. Now state-of-the-art agentic AI is available for installing on users' computers. Agentic AIs are AI apps that are not limited to just displaying stuff on your screen, and that don't stop after one prompt; you give it a project or continuous task, such as developing a software program, and it keeps working on it even after you go to bed. AI is in the agentic phase now. <span class="nowrap"> — ''The Transhumanist'' </span> 10:12, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

An Idea
Hey Mr Transhumanist! How has it been? I've recently been editing Draft:Outline of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict ↗ a bit but will have to take a short hiatus as exams are coming up where I'm from (will continue to make edits after ofc). Nevertheless, I wanted to propose an idea to you where we could team up with Wikipedia:WikiProject Presidents of the United States ↗ to create outlines of all the US presidents (if it works it could create like 40+ outlines in a short time). They have this open task system with a progress bar which I think could give them motivation for the collaborative project, but those are my two cents. What is your opinion? (Also can't wait to see you continue editing, I've been scouring the drafts and you've basically contributed majorly to all of them so WOW. Respect.) Atakes Ris (talk) 13:07, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
: Thanks.<br><br>It has been getting more and more exciting, due to the ripple effects of the March 31st Anthropic AI source code leak (512,000 lines of program code). Billions of dollars of agentic AI research and development given to the world for free. The entire AI field has leaped forward because of it, with AI getting smarter faster than ever. We are now firmly in the agentic phase of AI, rapidly progressing into the multi-agent or collaborative AI phase. If you haven't installed agentic AI yet, I suggest that you do.<br><br>As for creating 40 new outline drafts, I think it would be more practical to work on the 120+ outline drafts that we already have. Drafts get deleted if they go six months unedited.<br><br>What little time I have to spend on outlines will be to prevent the outline drafts from disappearing. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. <span class="nowrap"> — ''The Transhumanist'' </span> 10:41, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
::Hello there again! :) I have an idea again. What would you think of organising a drive to help reduce the number of outline drafts we have to proper outlines (considering that a major driving force for recent outline development has been you, and we ''kindaaaaaaaa'' need more people to help out)?
::Exams are still underway but I have added some stuff to Draft:Outline of the arts ↗ (procrastinating studying for Wikipedia lmao), could you take a look? Thanks. Atakes Ris (talk) 12:08, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
::: Concentrate on preparing for your exams. Focus. Talk to me when those are done. Ace 'em. <span class="nowrap"> — ''The Transhumanist'' </span> 06:28, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
::::Okay exams are done, and I have taking a hiatus from outlines to other things (gotten a bit too monotonous lol). Anyhow, any ideas on your part to revitalise activity and interest in Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines ↗? Atakes Ris (talk) 10:04, 23 June 2026 (UTC)
::::: My advice is to forget about outlines for awhile, continue your hiatus, and take the plunge of installing agentic AI locally, on your computer. It's wild, man. AI is advancing fast, and doing this will let you catch the wave. It will also increase your situational awareness, and then, you'll know what to do: amazing things. <span class="nowrap"> — ''The Transhumanist'' </span> 00:06, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
