'''Welcome to the third edition of the WikiProject Eurvision newsletter!''' This newsletter is surely catching on, and I'm sure that if we continue to rotate the editors' section as much as possible, everyone'll get a chance to contribute and it'll definitely be more diverse.

The project is still in need of re-organising. Nothing has happened in the form of splitting the project between the song and dance contests in over a month, and I feel that we really need to push forward with this. To add your comments just leave a message in the talk page Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#Project Scope ↗.

Throughout September, a lot of things have happened in relation to the Eurovision Song Contest 2009; the announcement of the return of the jury into the final was the biggest news. However, more news appeared, such as the Dutch representative being announced, as well as more countries announcing their participation at the contest. Before long the national finals around Europe will start, and the countdown will be on to 16 May.

With everything that's been happening, I'd like to encourage everyone to do their best to contribute to all Eurovision-related Wikipedia articles, and welcome our new members to the project.

I have started a Wikipedia:Request for comment ↗ on this topic at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#RfC on ESCKaz reliability ↗. This discussion originates from questions on the reliability of the ESCKaz website and if it should be used in Eurovision articles on Wikipedia. It has now being extended to fully review all sources used in articles covered by WikiProject Eurovision, including ESCToday and Oikotimes. This is a very important issue to the project as sourcing is a key part of articles, and consensus needs to be reached on which sources should be used when, where and how. This discussion however has so far lacked a wide range of editor participation, and as you have listed yourself as a member of WikiProject Eurovision I invite you to add your thoughts. In particular more input is needed from editors which have a high level of experience with relevant guidelines/policies such as Wikipedia:Reliable sources ↗ and Wikipedia:Verifiability ↗, and who have up until now stayed outside this debate, though all contributions are welcome. '''Welcome to the fourth edition of the WikiProject Eurvision newsletter!''' As the contest gets into full swing, more and more editors will come and edit the project's articles. It is important that we not only make sure that the correct information is added, but try to help the users who added the information if possible. We learn through our mistakes, so leave a reminder on their talk page.

November is unique in that it will have two newsletters going out. This one along with a November supplement that will recap what happened in November. We decided to switch to an end of the month format so say the October Newsletter summarizes what happened in October, which it doesn't in its current first day of the month delivery. By December, the newsletter will come out at the end of every month.

So far I am very happy with how the project is going about four months after its reorganization. We get into arguments here and there, but members' opinions and comments are crucial to the project's existence. They keep us on our toes and help us continue to be a great source of Eurovision history.

Sorry that this issue is a little late, I've been busy ;)

Just a couple of short months after starting the newsletter and reorganizing the Eurovision project ↗, things are finally starting to look good and consistent for 2009!

As we move into December, and ever closer to the "heart" of the National Final/Selection season, I would like to remind members to take a look at the project description/guideline on the project page and try to follow it the best way possible as the season progresses. Our main goal here is to have all of the articles consistent, while also being able to nominate them for GA ↗ status or above once the 2009 contest is over. The best and easiest way to achieve this is if we all work together and follow the guidelines. I would also like to remind users to source all information added into articles, preferably by reliable/established sources. Any questions regarding sources should be asked on the project talk page. Also, there is a large backlog of 1087 Unassessed Eurovision articles ↗ that need to be assessed. Any help with assessment will be appreciated and noted.

If we can manage to work together and follow the guidelines, as well as monitoring unregistered IP addresses, I think the 2009 season will go by much easier than past years! Sure we will still get into our little arguments here and there, and have different opinions about editing, but that's part of the whole editing experience. What fun would there be without the occasional drama? Just remember that at the end of the day, we are all working towards a common goal.

It's been a busy few months for me at school so I am going to need a lot more participation from the WikiProject in organizing this newsletter each month. It's not an easy task. The best way to help would be to submit anything you feel should be on the next newsletter here ↗ so that when I want to make it, I have all of the information ready to go. Also, by doing it this way, there is more information that you want to know as opposed to what I felt was important.

National final season is now in full swing and participants and songs are being chosen every week. For the most part, we are doing a great job in keeping all of the pages up to date, but I urge veteran editors to help out the new people as they tend to not know how everything should be done. As always, I am here to help so if anyone needs an opinion or has a question feel free to leave me a message on my talk; I am on Wikipedia everyday and can respond swiftly.

'''Welcome to the seventh edition of the WikiProject Eurovision newsletter!''' It has been a busy month full of national finals and homework for school, so I apologize for publishing the newsletter so late.

The deadline for choosing the entries is right around the corner and following its passing, we will have a great opportunity to improve the quality of the articles in our project. There are many song stubs that have been created for the entries this year and I would like to see them expanded into coherent articles. Also, I think we need to take a look back at the "Country in ESC 2009" articles because I have noticed that most of them are out of date and need to be updated.

We need to focus more on quality these days instead of just adding new info wherever it fits. Our goals is not to jam as much info onto a page as we can, but to create an encyclopedia that people can read and learn from. Think about that next time you add something. Maybe take a minute to read the article over and fix any evident spelling, grammar, or flow problems. Everyone needs to do their share to make this a successful project.

'''Welcome to the eighth edition of the WikiProject Eurovision Newsletter!''' It's been one incredible month with all 42 entrants finalising their songs.

In one weekend we found out the winner of Melodifestivalen 2009 ↗, the song the Czech Repbulic had selected and also that the Georgian entry, "We Don't Wanna Put In ↗", had been disqualified!

The running order draw took place on March 16th and Montenegro will open the 2009 contest, just like they did last year, having been drawn 1st in Semi Final 1. Spain got to pick their position for the 2009 final, and they will perform 25th. The UK got a much better draw than last year and will perform 23rd. Other notable draws see that Bosnia and Herzegovina will close the first semi final, Croatia will open semi final two and the Netherlands will close it.

In terms of articles: some "Country in the ESC 2009" pages are still short compared to more detailed articles like the Sweden ↗ and Lithuania ↗ pages. The "At Eurovision" and "Promo" sections in these articles need to be updated as many have released promo videos, updated their songs and changed elements of their stage productions. The Greece ↗ and UK ↗ articles are the best representatives of these features.

Arguments have erupted over the language of the Bosnian entry. No official source has been found yet and the 4LYRICS source is questionable due to an on-going argument in the comments section on the "Bistra voda" lyrics page. The overall concensus on the language used in the song is Bosnian so please, '''no more changes''' to the language!

We're less than a month away from the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 and now is the time to make sure that all articles are the best that they can be. This is our busiest time and thousands of people will come to Wikipedia and will see our work. We need to show them that Wikipedia is a place to come for facts and a site that they can rely on.

I can't emphasize enough how important it is for members to take part in discussions on talk pages. We have 65 members and usually less than five people step up and comment. Editing Wikipedia means is being part of a community. Take pride in what you do here and make your positions known!

This month was a very busy month in terms of editing and adding to Eurovision 2009 ↗ articles. The 2009 contest ↗ is now over but there is still much work to be done.

Some Country in ESC 2009 pages are yet to have their "At Eurovision" sections updated. Some countries need more information than others, e.g. Slovenia's article needs to mention that the song was actually sung in Slovenian and English, and not just English like in the official mp3, etc.

Work has begun on the 2010 contest article ↗ already. Please do not add sections to the article about confirmed participants or withdrawn participants unless you have a source!

Things are beginning to quiet down now that the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest ↗ is behind us, which is the project's busiest time of year. A few of us however still had to slow down during this period, including myself, as May and June also happens to be exam season in multiple parts of the world. There is much still to be done in any case with preparations for the 2010 Song Contest ↗ now well under way, and the host city, Oslo ↗, now confirmed.

There are several items that this project needs to debate including choices of sourcing and what contests come under the banner of this project. The first of these items is already being addressed at a new RfC (see left). Further ideas that could be developed include creation of some article guidelines for Eurovision articles. This could start as an advisory essay and then later, if consensus permits, become an official Wikipedia guideline. Examples of these already in existence include Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines ↗ and Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines ↗.

It has been a very slow couple of months in terms of Eurovision news since the passing of the 2009 Contest, however, it has been a very busy time for guidelines and policies affecting our project. Landmark decisions have been made regarding our use of sources and even how we are to refer to Macedonia. In addition, several of our Good Articles ↗ have been delisted as part of a task force ↗ charged with maintaining the quality of Wikipedia's Good Articles.

With there being less information to add and therefore less to do for some, we need to focus on the upkeep and quality of our project's articles and getting those inactive members active once again. We can do this by making sure all new guidelines and naming policies are adhered to and by working to move articles up the quality scale ↗. We are a WikiProject and we all work towards a similar goal. Introduce yourself to your fellow members and get active!

August 2009 will not be remembered as a good month for WikiProject Eurovision. The number of this newsletter might have something to do with it, other possible explanations include circumstances, time of year, and even just coincidence. In any case we have had no new members and no further GA or FA article promotions.

The demotion of Eurovision Song Contest ↗, probably the most important article on the project, was a historic blow. Reasons for this and other demotions in recent months include an inflation of article standards, article deterioration through inappropriate edits, and possibly inappropriate promotions in some cases.

We should remember however that despite these demotions we still have 2 FAs, 9 GAs, and 41 B-class articles, as well as 2 Featured Lists. This is a big achievement for a project with only 75 members, a small amount compared to other projects. To compare WikiProject Schools ↗ has 292 members with no newsletter, and WikiProject Video games ↗ has a massive 1,298 members with only a quarterly newsletter.

This project will likely be disadvantaged for a long time to come with limited membership and fluctuating activity during the year, but it will grow out of this blip.

There have been quite a few updates to the 2010 Contest article ↗ since 1 September. Nine countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina ↗, Croatia ↗, Cyprus ↗, Ireland ↗, Macedonia ↗, Malta ↗, Poland ↗, Serbia ↗, and Slovenia ↗) have confirmed their participation, and the article in general has seen many changes. Sadly, whilst some editors have been working hard to provide reliable sources, others have been less thorough and the article has had to be semi-protected ↗ again to prevent further disruption. This is a shame, as ideally anyone should be able to edit; however, the talk page ↗ is always available to bring new information to light.

The participating countries' section ↗ has also been updated to allow the inclusion of information about the language, artist and song (with an English translation as appropriate), although to date this is very much a work in progress. As news comes in, we look forward to enriching this section in the coming months&mdash;backed-up of course with sources ↗!

No new country-specific articles have been written these past two months. If you want to add more detailed information about a country's participation in the 2010 Contest, this is the ideal way to do it, and they are very much appreciated by our readers.

Another decade has past for the Eurovision Song Contest. The naughties ↗ will probably be remembered as a decade of both success and controversy for the contest.

Televoting ↗ reached its peak in the early 2000s. This gave the contest a more democratic edge, but by 2008 it was widely believed to have made Eurovision resemble a political and geographic football match rather than a song contest. The EBU took action in 2009 ↗ by reducing televoting to having only a 50% weighting in the results of each contest.

Many new countries have joined the contest in the last decade, bringing the number of participants to a new high. Among this some countries withdrew while others returned, though one of the major missing countries, Italy ↗, did not make a return as was hoped by many.

There was not a shortage of controversy either. Two participants went to war ↗, and the buzz over the planned participation of Kosovo ↗ put Eurovision in the middle of a political storm ↗. One also cannot forget that this decade saw the introduction of two spin-off contests - the Junior Eurovision Song Contest ↗ and the Eurovision Dance Contest ↗. It is still not fully clear on how these fit into this project, perhaps we will work that out during the tens ↗.

We're in full swing now! Although the Eurovision Song Contest is around 2 months away, this is probably one of the busiest times of the year for the WikiProject, with a whole load of semi-finals, quarter finals, heats as well as national finals to see who the country chooses to represent them at this years Eurovision Song Contest.

We now know which of the 35 countries will vote and perform in which semi-final ↗. With the 'Big Four' and host country, Germany and Spain voting in the first semi-final and France, Norway and the United Kingdom in the second semi-final.

With 22 out of the 39 countries decided, we are just about half way through, with a whole lot more to come!

So when creating new articles about a performer or song, please remember to add sources ↗ either from Eurovision.tv, ESCToday or other reliable sources.

Please get involved, and contribute anything to articles whether it's a little spelling mistake or a whole new paragraph, and remember to look at the talk pages and have your say on any discussions that may be present.

I apologize for the lack of a newsletter these past few months as I had gotten quite busy in life. Adding to that, the lack of group participation by editors made me feel like my efforts were a waste of time that no one appreciates.

I think it is important that we behave like a "club" of sorts and have fun editing Eurovision articles. Eurovision is a fun event and we should be able to discuss the results, talk about Contest related possibilities and work to expand knowledge of the Contest to those who may not be familiar with it. When I edit articles, I hope that someone will come along later and say "wow, all of this happened and I didn't even know it!" Come on guys, get each other's instant messenger ↗ name and team up to make an article great!

:Hi. I'm right with Pelmeen10. Area records do not depend on the fact that every country of it has done a comparable mark in each discipline. So please let the records stay until maybe someone will find more information to correct it. Please consider that a lot of 'old fashioned' and 'exotic' disciplines (f.e. 300m in/outdoor or 400m hurdles indoor will get more and more prominence because of the meeting's chance to mark records). Hi! Athletes from all nations need to be selected... in some cases there will be more than 3 with a qualifying standard, some may not be in form or be injured. The list is just a current guide to how each nation is doing in terms of qualifying times. Also, you have used a reference that is not in English. Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games



Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the 2012 Summer Paralympics ↗. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Wikipedia does not allow original reporting, this is largely through Wikinews ↗ with a project page found at Wikinews:Paralympic Games ↗. If you are interested in helping to get Wikimedians to the next Summer Olympics,I'd encourage you to assist with Wikinews efforts, and also to work on all language 2012 Summer Paralympic Wikipedia articles before, during and after the Games to demonstrate a track record of success. Hey Bearas

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor ↗ on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON ↗ data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here ↗, along with a list of prominent templates ↗, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback ↗ page.

Some dubious IP edits



I just reverted an edit of Shooting at the Summer Olympics ↗ even though the sourcing didn't allow me to check it easily. The IP had vandalised British people ↗ about 3 hours later and this looked like similar vandalism to me. In doing so, I also reverted another similar IP and went back to your version. The latter IP has also edited ↗ Weightlifting at the Summer Olympics ↗ and Boxing at the Summer Olympics ↗, both articles you'd worked on, and Finland at the Olympics ↗ too. Invitation to the African Destubathon



Hi. You may be interested in participating in the '''African Destubathon ↗''' which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. HVDC in Lithuania?


Hi, I found the list of HVDC links in Lithuania ↗ and a couple of related articles and map images you created (see also articles in :lt:Kategorija:Lietuvos elektros jungtys ↗ and images in commons:Category:Energy maps of Lithuania ↗).

As far as I can say, it's a major error to use the abbreviation HV'''DC''' ↗ for many of the described power transmission lines in article titles, infoboxes and filenames.
In fact, all lines of the Lithuanian transmission grid included in the list (in particular the 330 kV lines) are standard HV'''AC''' ↗ lines. The only real HVDC line in Lithuania currently is NordBalt ↗ (see/underground cable, with HVDC converter station ↗ at Klaipėda). The other HVDC project in Lithuania, LitPol Link ↗, consists of HV'''AC''' overhead power lines in combination with the HVDC back-to-back station ↗ at Alytus.

Yes, this is strange. I provided a link to the article in en wiki-> https://zw.lt/sport/o-roku-ow-sportow-podsumowanie-roku-mijajacego/ and yet another article (but that link I added only to Polish wikipedia https://zw.lt/sport/polak-z-wilna-jan-bakulo-powolany-do-polskiej-reprezentacji/ in Polish, where it is stated that Jan debuted in Polish national Team. That was my source. You can find the part concerning Jan in the section "Polak z Litwy w polskiej reprezentacji waterpolo" (a Pole from Lithuania in the Polish Waterpolo National Team). I don't know if you have any command of Polish but it's an article from the Polish language Lithuanian webportal zw.lt. It is written there just what I added to the page of Jan in wikipedia, namely that he moved to Poland, became a top scorer of Polish League, got Polish Identity Card, was called up to the Polish National Team and debuted in it. I don't know the rules in international Waterpolo Federation (comparing it to football for example). I don't know if it is possible to chamge the national teams. Maybe he was a player of Lithuania junior team, then moved to Poland and became a player of Polish National Senior Team and then returned to being a player of Lithuanian Senior Team? Or he was just called up to Polish National Team but did not debute in it and after that he returned to representing Lithuania but in Senior Team? I really do not know. I see that after my edit You provided another link with the information that Bakuło played in Lithuanian Team in 2020 in European Chmpionship. It is difficult to find something in the Internet concerning such a small popularity sport. But, I will try to find some new information and ask some people that may know more about that situation. If You can provide any new links to his career in Lithuanian National Team, especially before 2020, please do it.
