June 2026
25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Hello! Thank you for your efforts to improve Wikipedia, and in particular for adding references, as you did to Senega ↗! However, adding a bare URL ↗ is not ideal, and exposes the reference to link rot ↗. It is preferable to use proper citation templates ↗ when citing sources ↗, including details such as title, author, date, and any other information necessary for a bibliographic citation ↗. Here's an example of a full citation using the {{tl|cite web}} template to cite a web page:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">Lorem ipsum<ref>{{cite web |title=Download the Scanning Software - Windows and Mac |publisher=Canon Inc |work=Ask a Question |date=2022 |url=https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART174839 |access-date=2022-04-02}}</ref> dolor sit amet.</syntaxhighlight>
which displays ''inline ↗'' in the running text of the article as:
{{block indent|Lorem ipsum{{fake ref|1}} dolor sit amet.}}
and displays under '''References''' as:
#^ Download the Scanning Software - Windows and Mac ↗". ''Ask a Question''. Canon Inc. 2022. Retrieved 2022-04-02.
If you've already added one or more bare URLs to an article, there are tools available to expand them into full citations: try the Citer tool ↗, or in the wikitext editor ↗, try the reFill tool ↗, and in the Visual Editor ↗, the reference dialog ↗ can convert some bare urls into a full citation.
''Really? 211k edits and you are placing bare URLs? We even have an "easy button" option for you: {{tl|cite POWO}}. Please don't leave these kinds of edits for others to do. While I'm at it, please put a {{tl|speciesbox}} on your draft species articles, and learn the other minimal formatting these kinds of articles require.'' <!-- Template:Uw-bareurl --> UtherSRG (talk) ↗ 22:16, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
:{{U|UtherSRG}} This user is notorious for sloppy, half finished poorly crafted drafts, they expect everyone else to clean up after them and I have no expectation that anything will change that. Theroadislong (talk) 22:22, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
::{{ping|Theroadislong}} I guess we'll just ahve to repeatedly warn them, then block them for longer and longer times until they start to get the message. - UtherSRG (talk) ↗ 22:27, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reminder. As noted above by User:UtherSRG I've been working rather systematically to improve Senega ↗ and the coverage of the species listed there.
- Is it important that I do a ref improve each time I add a cite or can I wait until I am done adding several?
- Maybe I should have added an under construction tag?
- I applogize for making mistakes. I have been trying to keep track of the Senegas which were formerly Polygalas.
- Very few sources were included and most species had no entries. I've been trying to include photos where they are on commons and to identify where the species are distributed.
- I noticed at least one is identified by only one specimen ever collected so a redlink seems questionable. I am not sure what I am allowed to include on the genus page and the list there. I apologize again for all my mistakes.
- I try to make corrections where I find them and haven't found it useful to berate other editors for their errors when they are doing work to improve coverage in this encyclopedia, but I know there are various approaches.
- Thank again for all your help and suggestions about how I can improve. I am a very slow learner and failing eyesight makes things even harder. Maybe it's all best left to a younger generation and more skilled editors or even AI, but it seemed worthwhile to try to expand coverage in this subject area. Often the sourcing is limited but many entries here started small and got expanded over time.
- Take care and be well.
- All the attacks and threats certainly make my efforts more stressful and unpleasant, but I will continue to do my best as long as I am able.
Beat regards,
FloridaArmy (talk) 22:51, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
:Well, this kind of work requires competance ↗. If you find you don't have the skills to actually do the work, perhaps you should simply make notes on the talk pages and provide reference information there so that the front-facing presentation of the articles are not degraded, while still providing some help to other editors. For the specifics that I called you out on, do not publish without having at least wrapped the bare URLs in some form of citation template. If you have questions like "Am I leaving things at the right level of completeness?"... your best bet is to look at other similar articles. Don't know how to format a speciesbox? Look at another species article. Don't know how to format a POWO URL? Look at another plant article that cites POWO. Don't know what's appropriate for a genus article? Look at a closely related genus article... And really, again, at your level of experience, you shouldn't have these kinds of questions. You know you can make the website bigger to accommodate your poor vision, right? You know you can make your own personal subpages to your user page to keep notes on how to do these things, too, right? - UtherSRG (talk) ↗ 23:02, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Hello! Thank you for your efforts to improve Wikipedia, and in particular for adding references, as you did to Pap Dean ↗!
{{block indent|Lorem ipsum{{fake ref|1}} dolor sit amet.}}
and displays under '''References''' as:
#^ Download the Scanning Software - Windows and Mac ↗". ''Ask a Question''. Canon Inc. 2022. Retrieved 2022-04-02.
If you've already added one or more bare URLs to an article, there are tools available to expand them into full citations: try the Citer tool ↗, or in the wikitext editor ↗, try the reFill tool ↗, and in the Visual Editor ↗, the reference dialog ↗ can convert some bare urls into a full citation.
Once again, thanks for adding references to articles. <!-- Template:Uw-bareurl --> <span style="color:#4B0082; font-weight:bold;">Kt</span><span style="color:#008080; font-weight:bold;">kv</span><span style="color:#B8860B; font-weight:bold;">tsh</span> <span style="color:#555;">(talk)</span> 00:21, 30 June 2026 (UTC)

:::It is definitely worth starting a page. So do at least the minimum that all species articles have: A speciesbox, and proper italics for taxa that are genus level or lower (and never for above genus level). Again, looking at a similar article will give you all the clues as to how to craft and format every piece of the draft properly. - UtherSRG (talk) ↗ 23:05, 28 June 2026 (UTC)

I published it, but had to notify you this way because a redirect was in the way. I would expand it if I were you. The Knowledge Pirate (talk) 21:10, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
