SS Dakota ↗

Hey, I liked the link to the image http://www.gutenberg.org/files/15229/15229-h/images/plate_37.jpg ↗ of the Dakota that you added (then removed) from the Project Gutenberg ↗ site. If it's from Project Gutenberg, isn't it very likely to copyright free and so able to be added to the article directly (like in an info box). Do you know what book it came from on Project Gutenberg. There's also an image here http://content.lib.washington.edu/cgi-bin/viewer.exe?CISOROOT=/wastate&CISOPTR=1023&CISORESTMP=&CISOVIEWTMP= ↗, although that one says it was scanned in 1999 and you need to pay for copies of it so it can't be used. I think the source they come from will be public though, so it's just a case of finding a copy that someone scanned or photographed and didn't copyright.

++ I found a whole bunch more links by searching for Steamship Dakota instead of SS Dakota (why I didn't think of that before I don't know). There should be a fair bit to build the article up

:Since no one signed I'll assume it's Ha. I removed the Gutenberg photo (I liked it too) cause there was copyright problems even though there shouldn't be since the photo is from 1907 and way before the 1923 cutoff year for copyrighted pictures. I found the sharper Dakota photo on Google Images by typing in "Dakota Steamship" just like you were doing. I agree 'SS Dakota" doesn't always work. Sometimes you get different results by typing "S.S. Dakota". i didn't think there'd be a problem with just 'linking' the photo as opposed to uploadingit onto Wikipedia without permission. :: As you say, it's OK to add a link to it, as long as it's not displayed as a photo in the article it can't break any copyright. I've seen a couple of different images (maybe some of them were just flipped around or mirror images actually) of the Dakota sinking on postcards, there seem to be a few of them around. Ha! You recently mentioned diff ↗ that Legagneux committed suicide, rather than having died in an accident. Do you have a reliable source for this? In Popular Mechanics Feb. 1915 ↗ on page 195 his name is listed as a aviation-related death on 6 July 1914. Are you saying that he committd suicide by deliberately crashing his aircraft? If you have a reliable source stating that this is the case, it would be very interesting, since I have been unable to confirm this via online sources. :My knowledge of French regrettably leaves a lot to be desired, but my understanding of this sentence is that "he died at Saumur when he crashed into the Loire while testing an aeroplane, a victim of his passion" (i.e. for flying). I came across this reply ↗ to a question about whether "se tuer" implies suicide:

Kyrle Bellew ↗

Thank you! I'd had some in the works and your refs did help. I just thought he was a fascinating character. If I find anymore, I'll put it on the page. The picture of Bellew in a dress http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kyrle_Bellew_in_Scandal.jpg ↗ is real as far as I know (even though Bain News Service can be somewhat unreliable). I think it was for his role in 1902's "School for Scandal" or 1910's "The Scandal" where he had to dress in drag briefly, but he sure looks good for a 60-year-old man! Film director categories

Well, for what it's worth, I created the category because it was already sitting as a redlink on seven or eight film articles (which isn't supposed to happen, as categories aren't supposed to be added to articles until they actually exist, but I digress). For what it's worth, any filmmaker who's directed a reasonable number of films that have Wikipedia articles of their own is allowed to have a comparable category, so there's no reason why you couldn't create one for Chautard as well — but for Chester Franklin, I'd suggest concentrating on an actual article about him before worrying about whether there's a dedicated category for his films or not. So I used an online tool ↗ to remove the unattributed-by-blogger image and present it as the single poster intended, shared by, and properly attributed to Associated First National. And while happy you solved the Flickr problem, look at the cautions on THIS page ↗. Certainly the Flicker user could not assert a copyright on someone else's work, but that does not prevent them from tagging images uploaded there with a "all rights reserved" tag and locking it from download. It would seem that Flicker does not investigate misuse of such tags. I felt it better to avoid that can of worms.

Blériot

Hi. Just seen your addition to this page, and I have some concerns. It's interesting material certainly, but I'm not sure that so much detail is necessary in an article which is a biography of Blériot: possibly it could be added in this detail to Daily Mail aviation prizes ↗, and also to the article on the Wright Brothers. I also have concerns about its accuracy: for instance there's a 3 Nov 1908 letter from Wilbur to Orville in which he talks of the prize, saying that winning it would "practically end the necessity for further demonstations next year", so the £1000 cannot really be called 'paltry'. I also don't think it's very well integrated into the article: it leaves the para about the Channel having been crossed by balloon as a ''non-sequiter''. I'd always prefer a source that can be confirmed by clicking a link, rather than by searching in an archive for a book more than 100 years old and long out of print, but the one thing that's needed is a reliable and verifiable source. Hi. We've gone through this before. If a film is lost, a reliable source should say so. If the only source you can find says the status is unknown, that's not lost and it should not be categorized as such. I asked this on the film Wikiproject and was told the exact same thing. If you want to seek a new consensus about it or bring the topic back up on the Wikiproject page, feel free to do so and I'll even add my two cents again but I don't think saying "it's well known that the film is lost" is how we should go about categorizing films. Film articles are held to the same standards as other articles and I'm sure I can't go to any page here, add some content I think I know to be true without a source and expect others to take my word. Film infobox

Hello Koplimek! I have to commend you on all of the article creation you have been doing. A very impressive line of work! I just have a question for you. Where are you getting the {{tl|Infobox film}} parameters from? It looks like you may be using an old template, since we now use "name" in place of "title" and "image size" in place of "imagesize". Not a huge concern but it is causing some funky things to happen, like The White Sister (1915 film) ↗ has the disambiguator in the infobox when it shouldn't. I would also point you to the use of the "screenplay", "story" and "based on" parameters. We have moved towards using these more specific parameters when in the past we would use parenthetical modifiers in the "writer" parameter. Let me know if you have questions. Re: film posters

Sorry this is sort of late. Had to be out of town for a bit without laptop and internet access. Still have some RL things going on but will try to get up to speed again soon. When it comes to determining if the poster is post-1923 public domain, it depends on either the film company didn't mark their posters as copyrighted, or in the case of the poster having a copyright, that the film was not renewed by the movie company.

We have quite a few posters here which are licensed as non-free; when I'm able to find a large enough copy that hasn't been cropped so I can see if there are really any copyright marks or not, I'll change the license and upload a larger copy of the poster. If you're interested, there are some films whose posters do have copyright marks but when you get hold of a large enough copy of the lobby cards for the film, the movie company didn't copyright the lobby cards. ;) When ''Subway Sadie ↗'' was at FA review, it had a very small copy of the film's poster. I couldn't find anything large enough to prove that the poster didn't have a copyright mark, but a very nice, large lobby card for the lost film did surface and it's what you see in the infobox there. :) I keep looking and either change licenses when I can or if I find something we don't have and it's not marked, I upload the poster or lobby card. Was recently working on Don Terry ↗ with Dr. B. An old film magazine told about how he was a tourist discovered in the old Café Montmartre ↗ at lunch, hoping to see some movie stars. The way he got into films was amazing, but somehow I wandered over to his Find-A-Grave page and started reading a bio of his wife. She was a daughter of the founder of Star-Kist Tuna. He reverted to his birth name and went to work for the tuna company after he came home from WWII. They were philanthropists who gave over $30 million to USC alone over time. Can you imagine--being discovered as he was and then being so well-off through his marriage? I was stunned, because so often you read stories like this and there are no reliable sources--this one has them. What a pleasant surprise, to receive a Barnstar for an article long done. Once upon a time, I had pretensions of taking Berthold to FA status, but tired of the inanities of the assessment process, and moved on.

I was moved by the sheer blind patriotic courage with which he persevered. I also enjoyed ruining that old myth about him being strangled to death with his Blue Max's ribbon.

I noticed that you've been pretty active on silent film articles (including creation / development of some of the J. Gordon Edwards stuff that's long lingered on my to-do list). I finally pushed a J. Gordon Edwards filmography ↗ live, and by and large I'm extremely happy with the work I've done there, but I have lingering concerns over the Edwards scenerist credit for ''The Queen of Sheba''. I've explained the situation more thoroughly at the article talk page. I'd value your input on the issue (along with anything else you'd like to point out about the filmography in general). It'd be nice to get stuff settled here, before I start moving down the list of the remaining Edwards films and then pushing for my ultimate goal of GA icons for the entire body of his work. I clicked a link while I was at your Amazon link and see there are quite a few ↗ offers to sell copies as very reasonable prices. The best bet looks like the "Like New" for $4.99 & shipping. Until McFarland made the generous offer to donate books, I'd looked at prices for the Perry Como biography, which is out of print. Re: posters

I'll get going on these ASAP. Can tell you now that the Scarlet Seas choice #1 is a large enough scan for me to see that there are no copyright marks, so that's easily PD. The PD or not question from 1923 on is whether you can find a full copy (borders not trimmed as this is usually where any copyright marks are found) to determine that they didn't copyright the poster or card.

We have posters and lobby cards for many films which have had their copyrights renewed, but when the posters or lobby cards were originally printed, they were not copyright marked, so they're in the public domain. The next step for me with a small or trimmed card or poster is to see if copyrights for the film and its materials were renewed. If that's the case, it can be licensed as copyright not renewed. Will also try to see if some larger copies of some of these can be found; even if they're not in such good shape, if they're large enough and have the borders, they can tell us if it's PD or not. :) We hope (talk) 20:32, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

:I have a couple more yet to do and would like to explain why I did some substituting. When the images were small, I tried finding larger ones, to see if any were not copyright marked. While I was looking, other posters and lobby cards for the films turned up which were large enough for me to tell they had no copyright marks. Thanks much for your kind words! I think we're now caught up on all the posters. I used the French poster for ''The Barrier'' because it might be a bit confusing to people to see a book cover there for a film. Tried locating a US poster for that and ''The Next Corner'', but no luck as yet. Did get a lobby card for ''The Hottentot'', though :) Can't believe that summer's coming to an end soon-a friend told me her daughter goes back to school on the 11th of this month, so it must be. What I got was an ad for the film from an old copy of ''Motion Picture Daily''. ;) If you spend a little time here ↗ at Lantern, you'll see a lot of old film magazines and and the like. Many of the copies of older magazines have come from the Library of Congress. The publishers had to deposit a copy when filing for original copyright protection. LOC has been scanning the non renewed copies and uploading them to Internet Archive. (The Lantern interface is a much better place to do searching then IA.) We hope (talk) 16:36, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Film images

I'm doing images and some work with articles (fixing dead links, updating where needed), but not writing content as before. Every time I'd try doing something like that, another "box war" would start up somewhere in FAs and GAs. I stopped here ↗. Let me get to the end of this page ↗ so I know where I stopped. The person uploaded a lot of posters, many of them from Republic. Republic didn't copyright mark any of their posters or lobby cards, so they're PD when you find one large enough to be able to use as proof. :I can understand how you must feel after losing all of that! It's like losing a friend, and in a sense it is, because you worked with the material for a long time.

:What I'm not doing any more is editing articles. Fine with me to edit files and so on. If I do, decide not to have an infobox and take the article to GA or FA, then there's the chance that the hue and cry over not having one starts. It inflames tempers on both side of the issue and wastes a tremendous amount of time as well as the arguments go on and on; some are even regularly "recycled" on many articles. I'm tired of having my time wasted in this way, so if I don't expand it, send it for GA or FA, I've won the personal battle of not wasting time. WP may be the poorer for it, but until there are some hard and fast rules about bothering editors about the infoboxes which aren't required, that's it for me re: editing articles.

:Many of those saying they want boxes are also pushing (some profusely) for text content creation/expansion, but one can't do both at the same time. The time spent talking boxes is time that can't be put into creation/expansion. If you do both-talk boxes at one article and create/expand another, the box issue may start all over-at the newer article, and the conundrum continues.

:I can upload Betty in Search of a Thrill here at WP with a PD-1923-abroad license; PD in the US but perhaps not other places. Those with watermarks can be uploaded here and sent to Graphics for work, then moved after work is done. The Lillie Langtry ↗ one is easy. CardCow keeps an archive of sold and unsold cards on their website.

::I think the Elvis article really needs to be split with some of it being spun off into separate articles; know I had to cover a lot of ground with Skelton because he was a performer for 70 years before retiring. (Went into the business as a young boy.) When we worked on the Waldorf-Astoria hotel article, there was so much material. It wound up with 2 separate articles-the original hotel from beginning to 1933 and the present hotel from 1933 onward. There's enough material on many of the key figures like George Boldt and Oscar Tschirky that we could easily expand their articles. John Warne Gates was one we did expand and take to GA.

If you didn't go to the event itself, there was only one way to really see it even though it was after the fact and that was via film. They had no pay per view or even closed circuit at a local theater. I found a letter from the Chicago Federation of Labor asking that the ticket price of $1 per person to view the film be lowered because they thought it was too expensive for quite a few people. Posters

The Dempsey one is by Otis. After you look at enough of these, you get to know which ones were contracted by which companies. MGM almost always dealt with Tooker Litho in NY for posters. Some dealt with Otis, some dealt with Butts of NY and some with Morgan. There was also a Miner Co. in NY who printed film posters.

Not a lot of signed lobby cards but First National dealt with Ullman in NY for most of theirs. Others like Paramount had cards done by Wyanoak, NY. Some 1920s MGM cards were done by Lubin, NY and American Multi Color of NY. Later on, those printing the cards didn't have their names on them. We hope (talk) 17:48, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

I believe you are right. Since our conversation on my talk page I have checked a good few photos of him, and I think it fairly obvious that the man in the D.5 is not Dunne. I can also tell you that his granddaughter is of the same opinion. Sadly, Wikipedia requires facts to come from sources deemed reliable and the Museum is one such. I have changed the image for a different portrait photo. Hi. Thanks for working to improve the site with your edit to List of suicides ↗. However, the edit had to be reverted, because as I'm sure you know by now, Wikipedia cannot accept uncited material ↗, and this indeed includes list-format articles, especially List of suicides, for which we had a discussion on this point years ago. If you want to restore your addition, please do so only with the proper citation accompanying.

Also, one other thing: If you can, please observe the format in which each entry is written. They're not written in full sentences, and therefore, don't end in a period. Rather, the general description of the who the person is, followed by the method. The reason is usually not given, especially when it's depression, since that's probably the reason for most of the suicides. templates for IMDB and IBDB links

Hi! You may already be aware of this, but the appearance and stability of your recently created articles like Robert Conville ↗ and Alexander Carr ↗ can be improved by using External link templates instead of direct urls, e.g. {{tl|IMDb name}} and {{tl|IBDB name}}. By simply adding the ID number, this ensures that if the URLs ever change (which is very possible), the links can still function without changing every single one. Also, Find a Grave ↗ should generally ''not'' be used as references: as a user-generated source ↗ with no editorial oversight, it is not a reliable source ↗, and often has factual errors (wrong dates, misidentified family members, etc.). :Hi AnimalParty, I appreciate your concern. But templating doesn't always work when the urls change or even when the urls don't change, that's why I'm always upgrading and correcting other peoples' mistakes particlarly the coding for IMDb and IBDB. Both seem to go from unsecure-http to secure-https, it's an ongoing manual job keeping wiki updated and relavent and protecting links from 404error. That's another reason for placing info/urls in External links so important material gets archived by Wayback and that seems to work really well, not always but well enough. I wish I had done that in early years at Wiki ie 2008-12. Some great material has been lost. But ordinary in-line b/w citations bypass all of that but even with that you have no way of knowing if a source link is still active or defunct without actually typing it in to search. While archiving links is certainly good for stability (even if the source is unreliable), the purpose of Wikipedia isn't in and of itself to generate archived links, and you can always archive URLs directly and instantly by typing them into sites like https://archive.org/web/ or http://archive.ph/ or http://archive.st/. And while I don't have a lot experience with the inner-working of templates, the logic should go that changes/corrections/ to all links governed by templates can be managed centrally, to prevent 404 errors like you say, and reduce the need for ongoing manual jobs (WP:LINKROT ↗ explicitly recommends ''not'' using bare URLs). :::to respond to earlier post about findagrave, while some(not all contributors) don't encourage findagrave as a citation, it is not forbidden. Some findagrave entries are better than others especially on long lost players, actors, their cemeteries etc. In other words it's a place to start not to use singular without other backup sources. Templates; there have been a few people who were excellent contributors who retired from Wikipedia over the issue of templates. When I created the Alexander Carr article, there was a pink box placed on a previous draft article using the name Alexander Carr preventing an upload of any article with that name, which is why I augmented my upload to Alexander Carr (actor) to bypass the pink draft block. It has since been normalized to Alexander Carr by I think FloridaAmy. I don't archive or harvest links on Wikipedia that are not relavent, I and many other contributors use the same sources repeatedly because they adequately verify information; there's no rule against that. For instance IMDb is used in External links on almost every movie and personality in the business dead or alive(it is sometimes citated as well). This issue with IMDb came up several years ago because a few people complained it wasn't perfect. Some of the issues are petty as Wikipedia has many arbitrary rules(ie rules that are not consistent). The LINKROT WP page also actually says 'do not delete a page because the URL to the source does not work any longer'. Keep in mind WP LINKROT is a page that can be edited by anyone so it might say one thing today and another tomorrow. The https/http is a problem because it's not consistent, it's not Wikipedia's fault, some sites will work with either and like I said others won't. HATNOTES: Citation Hatnotes/Headnotes are a real chore as many contributors and or bots put these up without being made to dig up the sources. They litter many a article even when articles may be adequately source. ::I am not at all aware of a method to remove an embedded watermark, especially if you do not have the original altered graphic (I assume that by carefully using only watermarked images is how they were able to get a good price for the original poster at auction, if it is truly a one-of-a-kind poster). Only advise (which you already know): suggest asking for assistance at the Silent Films Task Force page, or perhaps at one of the graphics task forces (which I have not researched) for assistance, if it can be done using the website image than it is more likely they might know how / have the graphics programming tools to do it. I know GettyImages uses watermarks, and are able to charge what seem to me to be high prices for use of their original out of copyright images. Good luck, and best wishes on this endeavor! Advice request for getting GA / FA review of early film

Hi! I hope you don't mind the random talk page dropin. I've been working on getting the Marx Brothers movie Animal Crackers ↗ to the point where it can be a featured article, with the idea that it might be a nice way to mark the film's going into the public domain in 2026. I've been looking around for editors I could ask to help out, and I was hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction.

The way I got to you is by looking for relevant wikiprojects. The closest I could find was the silent film one - which was sad, given that ''Animal Crackers'' isn't a silent film. You seemed to be the only member of that project who was still an active editor regularly working on film.

Anyway, I'd love some advice from an editor with experience in this space. A peer review has attracted a couple of editors who have been helping with the cleanup, but none of us really seem to have a good sense of how to attract the kind of attention it would need to get a GA or FA review.

If I'm barking up the wrong tree, then I apologize. Thanks for your attention!
