Foveaux Strait/GA1
Just letting you know that User:Ganesha811 has begun the review on the Foveaux Strait article. They noticed a couple of editors have been collaborating closely on the article. Instrument photos
Hi, now that school holidays are over(!) I'm wondering if I should set up a project page, even if it's just a dairy of what I'm up to. Would that be appropriate? If so, where would be a good place - a sub page of the NZ notice board, or of my user page? I suppose I could make a start and then move it later. I'm hoping to gather the clans and get some photos organised for the last couple of weeks of August. — Jon (talk) 21:58, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
:@Jonathanischoice How about setting up a taskforce as a sub-page of Wikipedia:WikiProject Musical Instruments ↗ ? You might end up with a great international collaboration ? You could always post about it on the WPNZ noticeboard as well. Marshelec (talk) 00:56, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
List of shipwrecks of Southland
I've finished work on Draft:List of shipwrecks of Southland ↗. As you started this draft, do you want to submit it for review, or do you think I should do so, or shall I simply move it to article space? I was thinking when I started work on it that I might create similar lists for other regions of New Zealand, but I've had my fill of the subject for now so I don't intend to pursue that idea in the immediate future.-Gadfium (talk) 03:42, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
:@Gadfium You have put a huge amount of work into this list - wow :). I am travelling at present and time is a bit limited. I will have a good look over the list article and get back to you with feedback (if any) within a few days, and then I suggest you move the article into mainspace. Once that is done, I will remove the existing list of shipwrecks from the Foveaux Strait ↗ article, leaving just a summary and a link to the new list article. Marshelec (talk) 05:51, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
::I'll be on holiday next week, but will respond after that.-Gadfium (talk) 08:53, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
:::@Gadfium Thanks for such a massive amount of work on this.:) Is there a need for any expansion of the lead ?? Apart from that point, I suggest you move the article into mainspace. I am happy to link to it from the Foveaux Strait ↗ article and then remove the list details from that article. The new list article could also be linked from other articles Stewart Island ↗, Bluff Harbour ↗, Fiordland ↗, Southland Region ↗ and possibly Transport in New Zealand ↗. I am happy to help with that if you want - just let me know._Marshelec (talk) 03:05, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
:I've moved the article to List of shipwrecks of Southland ↗ and made links to it as you suggested. I haven't changed Foveaux Strait ↗ so you can do that.-Gadfium (talk) 00:59, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
Bushy Park boundaries - for map
@Prosperosity Hi, I have found what appear to be legal land boundaries for Bushy Park on the Horizons Regional Council GIS system. I have taken a screen shot and roughly marked up in red, my understanding of the outer perimeter of the Bushy Park property, including the homestead and its gardens. Here is a link to my screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t1AxLZ2sQlS4kBFNyrF_gMYoc3nAM9HG/view?usp=drive_link I have previously looked into Open Street Map (and I have a user account). What steps would I have to go through to create a decent outline of the perimeter of Bushy Park in OSM, ie what approach is most practical for drawing/ tracing the boundaries ?_Marshelec (talk) 23:03, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
:Oh! I stand corrected, Bushy Park is already on OSM ↗ and already between OSM and Wikidata (it just wasn't showing up when I searched for it). That means you should be able to display the area of the park in the infobox. --Prosperosity (talk) 23:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
::Aha - it's the infobox type which wasn't displaying the OSM polygon. How does that look? (we can also change the colour of the border). Prosperosity (talk) 23:33, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
::@Prosperosity Yay, thanks for the help. I found another article with a template for including the OSM link into the map, and copied that, and bingo. I have an outline. Thanks so much :) See: Bushy Park (New_Zealand) ↗ now._Marshelec (talk) 23:43, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
:::Wonderful! For the article, I'd suggest formatting the images slightly differently - splitting them up into 1 main image per section, with galleries for some sections such as the fauna/flora. At the moment on my screen they tend to run-on, which means some of the images aren't placed in the sections where they make the most sense (e.g. the main photo for the fauna section on my screen is the young nīkau palms image).
:::I've also noticed some repetition in content in the wetland/education/visitor centre sections - I wonder if some of these could be combined, or if some of the sections would flow better with a different format (the homestead section feels like it should be above the visitor centre section, since there are references to the stable there that make sense if the homestead is discussed first). Prosperosity (talk) 23:51, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
::::@Prosperosity Thanks for the feedback. I have implemented those suggestions. See:Bushy Park (New Zealand) ↗._Marshelec (talk) 05:09, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

Carousels
@Canley Hi, I thought you might be interested in a couple of articles I have created about carousels in Melbourne and Geelong, after a recent visit.
thumb|Geelong Carousel ride - July 2024 ↗
We thought the Geelong Carousel ↗ was absolutely great - a fantastic restoration job, and a wonderful symbol of the revitalisation of the Geelong Waterfront that was undertaken from around 1996 to 2000. We were big kids and took a ride. Have a look at the video.:) I hope to get feedback on this article and new sources from the Geelong city authorities who own and operate the carousel. However, it has been two weeks since I emailed them and no reply so far.
After researching the Geelong Carousel ↗, I found that there is an even older fully-restored and heritage-listed carousel at Melbourne Zoo (must see this on my next visit). I have created and published a second article: Melbourne Zoo Carousel ↗. There is also a particularly fancy restored carousel at Luna Park in Melbourne ↗, so I may carry on with this theme and prepare yet another carousel article.:)
The artist Patricia Mullins ↗ was heavily involved in the restoration of these carousels - particularly the restoration of the carousel horses. The article about her could do with some improvement, so I may give this a go. I found an email address for her and sent a message inviting feedback about the two carousel articles, but again I have not had a response. If you are interested, have a look at the two articles - I would love to expand these with more details of the restoration work, but I have not yet found suitable sources. (Hence my queries to the City of Geelong, and to Patricia Mullins.)_Marshelec (talk) 04:30, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Kaikōura Dark Sky Sanctuary - creating a map
@Prosperosity Kia ora. I have another enquiry about a map. This morning I have created a draft Wikipedia article Draft:Kaikōura Dark Sky Sanctuary ↗ (It has just been formally accredited). I have also created a Wikidata item: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q130287261 ↗ It would be great to add a map to the article, but I am still not sufficiently experienced in Open Street Map to do this without help.
Perhaps you can have a look at what might be needed, and if you think it should be possible for me to do this, please give me some pointers. This newspaper article shows a map of the sanctuary.https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/350410810/kaikoura-worlds-newest-dark-sky-sanctuary ↗. As far as I can see, it is the entire Kaikōura District, less a small irregular shape shown in the illustration in the newspaper. See also the application document here:https://darksky.app.box.com/s/emnvq4j03nin2elyjqs4cpiirq6xhqnn ↗. Apart from my general lack of experience in using OSM, I have a few questions:
# I see that there is a territorial boundary (Administrative Boundary in OSM) for Kaikōura District in Open Street map. Is there a way of producing a copy of this boundary that can be used for the map of the sanctuary, and can be edited to show the "take-out" for the town (and is that the most appropriate way to start) ? Being able to copy the existing district boundary would save a huge amount of time.
# What is the most practical way of tracing the "take-out" for the town ?
# Is it necessary to trace along the coastline ? I presume so, but am not sure.
# I would like to gain experience by doing some editing in OSM. Is this a suitable starting project, or is this one too tricky ?
Marshelec (talk) 02:45, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
:I think it might be possible if you create a way in OSM for the border around the town, split the Kaikoura District boundary way at those two points, then create a relation that's the new boundary and the remaining parts of the district, both labelled as "inner" for the relation. I've never tried this before, but in theory it'd work.
:One thing is that you might not be able to see if the map's working or not if the page isn't a live Wikipedia page (i.e. after the draft has gone through).
:It's beyond my experience (so I might recommend starting with something else), but I'm sure there are people out there who could help! Prosperosity (talk) 02:57, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
Wayne Guppy - talk page
@Schwede66 Can you please have a look at this diff: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Wayne_Guppy&curid=33405640&diff=1245898026&oldid=1245810266
It seems wrong that an IP editor has completely reverted a talk page comment. Even if you don't agree with something posted on a talk page, unless it is your own post, or is slanderous or otherwise illegal, then surely it should not be reverted ?? I wasn't quite sure what action to take ? Can you either action this, or recommend what I should do ? Thanks Marshelec (talk) 22:29, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
:Hm. Not sure about that one, {{u|Marshelec}}. The IP says that they have no reliable sources. I'm not sure whether talk pages come under WP:BLP ↗. If yes, then the statement must be removed. Maybe have a poke around for policy or guidance. '''<span style="color: #000000;">Schwede</span><span style="color: #FF4500;">66</span>''' 22:38, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
:The IP uses both 2407:... and 49:... ranges (judging on similarity of edits, and they're both Vodafone mobile). They added that the mayor is right wing with one, and added a minor controversy with sources with the other. I removed the assertion he is right wing because it was unsourced, and the IP explained they don't have a suitable source on the talk page. The IP then removed their own talk page message. There's nothing problematic here if you accept this is one person using two different devices, or one device somehow connecting to the network in different ways, and they're obviously not trying to pretend they're different people.-Gadfium (talk) 01:04, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

Macquarie Island
Noted your correct "Reworded/modified the claim about the uniqueness of the exposure above sea-level and added one citation. Another citation is probably required." I had noted this claim too and never got around to checking it in depth (so to speak). The Moho under Macquarie Island is 5–6 km as I recall while under Iceland 40-16 km due to sort of continental crust associated with the hot spot plume. Can I suggest to be even more pedantically correct you could phase it "only ''oceanic crust'' mid-ocean ridge, if you can find a suitable reference. Iceland does has hot spot contamination and the documented tendency for brief maturation of its basalts at holding reservoirs about 5 km deep but some seem to come very quickly up from Moho depths with minimal contamination so perhaps Icelandic geologists would disagree with the claims of Australian geologists, given say their recent hot sampling of the new Reykjanes fires ↗. Using cite Q and referencing pages
@Pigsonthewing Hi, I seek some advice about using cite Q please. In an article I am working on, it is convenient to use a cite Q template to form one of the "Sources cited", separately from the normal "References" where the inline cites appear. This works fine. My question is how best to deal with the inline requirement to cite the source and the page number. I tried using the Sfn template but it doesn't seem to work correctly with cite Q. An alternative is to change to using the cite Q inline, along with the Rp template to give the page number. What is the best approach ?_Marshelec (talk) 06:25, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

:Also, have a look at my GA articles e.g. serpent ↗, I've been using Cite Q and sfn everywhere. Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail
I note there isn't an article for the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail yet,<ref>{{Cite web |title=Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail |work=Great Rides of New Zealand |publisher=Waitaki District Council ↗, Mackenzie District Council ↗ |url= https://www.alps2ocean.com/ |access-date=16 January 2025 }}</ref> but if you start one, we could mention the very small Waitaki Valley wine region ↗, which is nevertheless a proper geographical indication ↗ and probably should also have its own article. I stumbled upon the connection in an article in ''The Real Review'' about Valli wines, and their wine bar in Kurow ↗ which is a popular whistle-stop for cyclists on the trail.<ref>{{Cite web |title=An update on Valli and the Waitaki |last=Wong |first=Stephen |work=The Real Review |date=15 January 2025 |url= https://www.therealreview.com/2025/01/15/an-update-on-valli-and-the-waitaki/ |access-date=16 January 2025 }}</ref> Perhaps I'll make a start with stubbing out the wine region from New Zealand wine ↗. — Jon (talk) 06:02, 16 January 2025 (UTC)

Bridge over the Hutt River at Waione Street
@Schwede66 I intend to create a new article about the notable bridge over the Hutt River at Waione Street, but seek your opinion about the most appropriate article title. The issue is that the (older) sources that provide the richest detail about the bridge call it the Hutt Estuary Bridge, see examples here: https://www.engineeringnz.org/programmes/heritage/heritage-records/hutt-estuary-bridge/ ↗, and https://teara.govt.nz/en/photograph/23640/hutt-estuary-bridge ↗, and https://search.informit.org/doi/abs/10.3316/informit.292378194217426 ↗. However, there are frequent (and more recent) passing mentions in multiple sources that refer to it as the "Waione Bridge" or "Waione Street Bridge". Is it best to choose "Waione Street Bridge" because it has the most recent occurrences, even though they are generally passing mentions, or should I choose Hutt Estuary Bridge because it this is the name used in the most substantive sources. ?._Marshelec (talk) 07:35, 24 January 2025 (UTC)

Water
Hi I've just noticed that you've created both the articles Water supply in the Wellington Region ↗ and Water supply and sanitation in the Wellington Region ↗ and was wondering what the difference is. Is it possible that the content in these two articles overlaps? I'm not familiar with water so I don't really know if there's a differece, but I had a look at a few other places and Water supply in Japan ↗ redirects to the article Water supply and sanitation in Japan ↗ so is it possible that they could be merged, or if they're different, have a title changed to avoid this confusion? ―<span style="font-family:Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;">Panamitsu</span> (talk) ↗ 06:11, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
:Hi @Panamitsu and thanks for the feedback. I have worked on these articles over a prolonged period. They don't get many page-views. Yes, there is overlap between the two articles. I split off content about water supply into a separate article because I thought the "main" article was getting too long. Some content about water supply is retained in the "main" article, but there is more detail about water supply in the Water supply article. By the way, the article title "Water supply and sanitation in ..." follows the titles of other WP articles about the "three waters". However, the term "sanitation" is not ideal in a New Zealand context because we don't use that term much. Possible options for these articles could be:
:# further split the "main" article - perhaps moving the content about wastewater to a separate article, and then trimming the main article.
:# just trim the content about water supply that remains in the "main" article at present, so as to reduce the extent of overlap
:# revisit both articles to see if there is content that is "dated" and/or not sufficiently important to be retained, to enable the merging of the two articles (but the size of the merged article would need to be kept within reasonable bounds)
:I would be interested in your thoughts. I am happy to get stuck into these articles again within the next few weeks, when my commitments to supporting summer track & field athletics come to an end. Your feedback will be helpful. We should probably transfer further discussion to the talk page of the main article. :)_Marshelec (talk) 06:34, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
::Thanks for the quick response. I'll leave this up to you (or others) if you feel like working on this, because I unfortunately know nothing about this topic so I don't think I could be of much help. ―<span style="font-family:Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;">Panamitsu</span> (talk) ↗ 06:43, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
:::I just want to apologise for this. I've now realised that making a suggestion to someone on an article without many page views, and without offering to help, is probably quite annoying. Sorry. ―<span style="font-family:Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;">Panamitsu</span> (talk) ↗ 22:14, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
::::@Panamitsu Not a problem at all :) Feedback is always useful, and your comments will prompt me to get back to these articles at some stage fairly soon. There is new content to add anyway because two substantial new pipe bridges, conveying the bulk water from the Kaitoke catchment of the Hutt River have been built recently, as part of making the water supply more resilient against earthquakes. I hope to take my own photos of these new bridges to add to the article.Marshelec (talk) 22:32, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::Sounds interesting. ―<span style="font-family:Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;">Panamitsu</span> (talk) ↗ 22:38, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::@Panamitsu Given your work on articles about earthquakes, you might be interested in what I am working on right now. See: User:Marshelec/sandbox4. I have previously put a large amount of effort into the originally very short and inadequate article Kahurangi National Park ↗ - expanding it about ten-fold. However, I was aware that the park has particularly complex, diverse and unusual geology, but I lacked the background knowledge to do a decent job of writing up suitable content. I spoke to a friend who has a geology background, and after a long wait, he has now donated a large amount of content that will make a whole new article. I am in the process of "wikifying" what he has given me. He is also working on preparing a map that will go with the article. Significant work will be needed to create a summary section that can be imported in the main KNP article. If any of this interests you, please let me know - perhaps we can collaborate in review and integration of the content that has been donated._Marshelec (talk) 23:05, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::I have to say that that's some really good work there, both from you and the friend of yours. As for collaboration, I don't really understand anything about geology -- I'm mostly interested in the response to earthquakes (demolitions, cordons, red zones, etc) rather than the underground stuff, but this does seem interesting so I would like to help with the "wikifying". ―<span style="font-family:Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;">Panamitsu</span> (talk) ↗ 23:42, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::@Panamitsu It would be great to have your help. I have been working through the draft from the top, using the original reference numbers and reference information at the bottom of the draft to create template-based citations. I have deliberately left in the original citation numbers, for transparency when I show the draft to my contact who has donated this material. They will be deleted later. I have also done my best to add wikilinks to specialist terms etc. I am probably not going to be able to work on this again until Monday or Tuesday, so if you can spare any time to carry on with that kind of "wikifying" of the sandbox draft then please go ahead. One of the content-related issues that has already occurred to me is the need to expand, clarify or explain the terminology "arc-related" in a volcanic context. I am an electrical engineer by training, so you can imagine that I was puzzled by this terminology, to say the least ! Cheers, Marshelec (talk) 00:03, 22 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::Yes haha. I've had a bit of a go and have had more fun than I expected. Although I have one question: What does "6(70)" mean? Does it mean page 70 of reference 6? ―<span style="font-family:Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;">Panamitsu</span> (talk) ↗ 06:42, 22 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::@Panamitsu Sorry, I didn't get back to you about this one. I have realised that the 6(70) means it is number 70 of the "Wonders" described in Hayward (2022). As noted in my other reply below, I will get the page numbers from viewing the book at the National Library. Marshelec (talk) 07:48, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
Bulbinella rossii
@Alexeyevitch Thanks for mentioning your work on the article ''Bulbinella rossii ↗'' during the online meetup today. I am fortunate to have visited the Sub-antarctic Islands and have seen huge fields of ''Bulbinella rossii'' in flower. They were a spectacular sight - particularly on Enderby Island, where they have flourished after the removal of grazing animals. I have a couple of good photos showing ''B rossii'' that would be useful additions to c:Category:Bulbinella_rossii ↗. I will find these later and add them. One shows a banded dotterel amongst a group of ''B. rossi''. Marshelec (talk) 02:53, 30 March 2025 (UTC)
:Hi Marshelec. You're totally right! ''Bulbinella rossii'' is truly a spectacular plant! Its long and glabrous leaves combined with its golden flowers, would've been a really awesome sight to see to see in-person. I've never been to the sub-Antarctic, but I would like to at some point in the future. This article was challenging to write, as there weren't many sources available but I did my best to make it hit all major points and to make it engaging. The photos would be a great addition aswell! <span style="font-family:cursive;color:DarkBlue;cursor:help"><span>Alexeyevitch</span>(talk)</span> 03:10, 30 March 2025 (UTC)

Geology and Geomorphology of Kahurangi National Park
@Panamitsu Thank you for so much help in wikifying the citations in the draft content I am working on about the Geology and Geomorphology of Kahurangi National Park. Greatly appreciated. I have ordered a copy of one of the main references (Geology of the Nelson area), so that I can review it myself. I will aim to add page numbers for some of the main references. There are also some minor points of style in the text that need review including words such as "impressive" and "fine example". Plus I will need a summary section that is suitable for inclusion in the National Park article. I will try to keep up progress with work on the draft. Thanks again for your help.Marshelec (talk) 08:43, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
:It was good fun to work on and I might end up working on that "wikifying" a bit more at some point if there's still more to do when I'm ready for it. By the way, in my recent project of creating articles for New Zealand snails (with the help of AxonsArachnida), I created the article ''Cytora kahurangi ↗'' today which, to my surprise, was named after Kahurangi National Park. ―<span style="font-family:Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;">Panamitsu</span> (talk) ↗ 10:13, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
::I have requested a copy of Hayward (2022) at the National Library, and will review that over the next week, to obtain page numbers for each of the citations from that source. A larger job is to add page numbers for the large number of citations of Rattenbury, M.S.; Cooper, R.A.; Johnston, M.R. (1998). I have obtained a copy and will try to work through this over the next couple of weeks, in between other jobs. The next step would be to create a decent lead section of say, 3-4 paragraphs. I may ask my friend to assist. Then finally, I think it would be reasonably complete. I am unsure about whether to keep working on it in the sandbox, or just go ahead and publish it largely as it is, and then work on it in main article space._Marshelec (talk) 07:44, 23 April 2025 (UTC)

::::I’d say that after wikifying the last handful of citations, this is ready for mainspace. Note that it needs to be moved so to not lose the edit history. Page numbers can come later. Pākawau - new article
@Schwede66 Kia ora, I have created a new article Pākawau ↗. Lots more can no doubt be added, particularly about the history. There are lots of mentions of the coal mine in Papers Past - I have only scratched the surface. There are also a few historic images in DigitalNZ, from the Nelson Provincial Museum. Also a couple in the Alexander Turnbull Library See: https://digitalnz.org/records?text=Pakawau ↗. Perhaps there is even a local history ?? Maybe you could check out the local library ? It would also be good to get a better photo. The one you took of the road is a start, but something showing the beach might be better. Cheers,_Marshelec (talk) 05:12, 13 April 2025 (UTC)

'''WikiProject Articles for creation ↗''' is holding a '''month long Backlog Drive ↗ in June!'''<br />
The goal of this drive is to '''reduce''' the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 1 month of outstanding reviews from the current 3+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 June 2025 through 30 June 2025.
You may find :Category:AfC pending submissions by age ↗ or other categories and sorting ↗ helpful.
Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.<br />
There is a backlog of over {{Rounddown|{{formatnum:3,205|R}}|-2}} pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi Marshall. I remember you saying Commons needs more Naenae photography. Keen to help out if you have any specific requests. Cheers, Quilt Phase (talk) 04:05, 21 June 2025 (UTC)
:@Quilt Phase There is virtually no coverage at present of the urban centre of Naenae ↗, or buildings other than the new pool/fitness complex and the Sikh temple. There is no coverage of parks. So I suggest a general photographic survey of the urban centre and at least some photos of parks. You might perhaps photograph some buildings that have a back-story that could be told in an expansion of the article. I would be willing to take this on, providing sources can be found. However, at this stage, I haven't done enough research and reading to be able to provide specific requests. One exception is that I believe that the upper reaches of the Waiwhetu Stream ↗ are confined into a rather sad concrete culvert through some of Naenae. If that is still the case, it would be good to have a photo or two for me to add to the article about the stream. Questions from University of Canterbury about creating a new bio article - Graham Nuthall
@Schwede66 A person from the engagement group at University of Canterbury has sent a note to WANZ with several questions about creating a new biography article for the late Professor Graham Nuthall. This seems like a great opportunity to provide support and increase the interest of the university in Wikipedia. I have prepared some detailed responses to the questions and emailed them to committee for feedback. Because it covers translation (from German Wikipedia), and conflict of interest, your input would be highly valuable. Please see your emails :)_Marshelec (talk) 04:00, 25 August 2025 (UTC)

Geoff Harrow article
@Paora Thanks for your multiple improvements to Geoff Harrow ↗. I have supported the person who created this article over an extended period. They have found it a difficult process, but the article is now published, and is significantly better following your input. One of the difficulties faced by the original author was they wrote a whole lot of content without including inline citations. Then with the passage of time, they forgot where they got many of the facts from. It has taken a long time to sort this out, and there are still gaps. This is a useful reminder to me that when guiding a new editor, to urge them to add a citation after every sentence or two, until the work is developed and they can see where a few citations can be merged. It is highly problematic to be hunting for citations after loads of content has been written. Thanks again. _Marshelec (talk) 02:43, 26 September 2025 (UTC)

Categories for art galleries
@Grutness Hi, I would like to ask for your opinion about the current arrangement of categories for art galleries. It seems to me that that the current arrangements are not ideal. We have at the top level :Category:Art museums and galleries in New Zealand ↗, but this contains a subordinate :Category:Art galleries in New Zealand ↗. This leads to inconsistency about where individual art galleries are placed in the category system. As one example, I found the category: Art museums and galleries in New Zealand and searched to see if it contained the Aigantighe Art Gallery ↗ in Timaru (I vaguely recalled that there was an article about it but was a bit uncertain of its unusual spelling and thought I would find it in that category). But it is not there. Instead it is in Art galleries in New Zealand. Looking at the higher level categories, it appears that "Art museums and galleries in ..." is the standard form. It is worth trying to rationalise the current category arrangements ?_Marshelec (talk) 20:53, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
:Yeah, The galleries tree is a little confused - a lot of art dealerships style themselves as galleries as well. Personally I'd have preferred if there was a parent "Art museums and galleries..." with subcats of "Art dealerships..." and "Public art museums and galleries...". At present art dealerships are categorised as "art dealers", which confuses businesses and individuals. Pretty sure that would mean a overhaul of the whole tree for all countries though (unless NZ's categories are unique). History section of South Island ↗
@Wainuiomartian I have started work on creating a revised History section for South Island ↗. It would be great to have your review, or for you to contribute directly. At this stage I propose to keep the work in my User:Marshelec/sandbox2 until it is well developed before replacing the existing content. If you are happy to do so, please think about whether a staged approach to refreshing the article might work, or whether it is best to aim for refreshing the entire history section in one big edit. I started by going back to a version of the article that had history in narrative rather than bullet point form, and have reworked and expanded it from there. I didn't think that the current sub-heading structure was ideal and have departed from that already. This revised content is only partly developed, but see what you think. Please contribute by directly editing in the sandbox if you want. I plan to state on the article Talk page that I am working on a full revision of the History section, so that those who watch this page know that it is happening. _Marshelec (talk) 05:10, 13 December 2025 (UTC)
:@Marshelec that looks very good. I always have trouble with the references if I rewrite and publish smaller sections, so I prefer one big edit. But whatever suits you. I'll chip in where I can. Wainuiomartian (talk) 18:16, 13 December 2025 (UTC)

Wellington's historic coastal defences
@Wainuiomartian I wish you a Happy New Year !!. Here are my Christmas Day wiki-musings: I wonder if there is a case for a new summary-style article about Wellington's historic coastal defence sites ?. I have thought about this today after working on expanding a stub article HMS Poneke (1883) ↗ about a rather dodgy spar-torpedo boat that was purchased in the 1880s for the defence of Wellington Harbour (as one of four nationwide - see Defender-class torpedo boat ↗). I decided to work on HMS ''Poneke'' following my work on the Lyttelton project ↗ where I created Magazine Bay (Canterbury) ↗ - the location of the Lyttelton spar-torpedo boat. There are many existing articles covering aspects of the coastal defence history of Wellington Harbour, but I cannot find any Wellington-specific overview or list article that summarises them. There isn't even a category for coastal fortifications or defences specifically in Wellington. Some of the existing articles that could be linked include: Matiu / Somes Island ↗, Fort Ballance ↗, Kau Point Battery ↗, Fort Buckley ↗, Fort Kelburne ↗, Wrights Hill Fortress ↗, and there are many other sites: Fort Dorset, Fort Opau etc, (and there was apparently a "Gardens Battery"). Here is a Google site that provides an overview of Wellington coastal defences: https://sites.google.com/site/nzcoastaldefences/wellington-s-coastal-defences ↗. However, there is already a national-level article: Coastal fortifications of New Zealand ↗. This lists all the main Wellington sites in national tables. Is that sufficient, or is there merit in a Wellington-specific article (even if it duplicates content in the national-level article) ? If it seems that it is not worth creating a new article, I still think that the history of coastal defences (and perhaps the torpedo boat) could be covered at a high level in the Wellington Harbour ↗ and Wellington ↗ articles, and a link added to the national article. One possibility might be to create a new category specifically for articles about Wellington coastal defences. Then it would be possible to have a link to that category in any discussion of coastal defences in Wellington-specific articles. What do you think: (a) new summary-style article (b) new list article (c) new category ?. Also, which existing "top level" Wellington articles should have some content and links about historic coastal defences ? _Marshelec (talk) 06:55, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
:I'm not sure. The coastal fortifications of New Zealand article has sections on the Russian Scare and then WW2, which skips over the Fort Dorset (1908) period, though it is included in the table. If a Wellington article was to be created then I would call it 'Coastal defences' rather than fortifications, because that could then include HMS Poneke and the anti-mine net across Wellington Harbour, which are both defensive measures but not fortifications. I created a section in the Miramar Peninsula article ↗ on the defences around the peninsula, and I added Fort Kelburne to the Ngauranga ↗ article. The easy option is just to add a category for Wellington coastal defences, but it would be nice to have a complete summary or listing all in one place, if you think readers would be interested - given that they can already read the Google site that you noted. That's a nice site and I see little point in just duplicating what is there, though again, it doesn't include non-building defences like the net. Interestingly, I seem to have put more info on Point Halswell on the Miramar Peninsula page than either the Coastal fortifications page or the Google Site has. How many page views do any of the articles get - is it worth the effort of creating an article? I do like the idea of a nice summary bringing everything together with more detail or context than the existing national article has. The Wellington Harbour article could certainly have a piece in the history section about defences around the harbour. Wainuiomartian (talk) 17:49, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
::@Wainuiomartian Thanks for the feedback, I decided to go ahead and create a new section in the Wellington Harbour article: Wellington_Harbour#Harbour defences ↗ Can you please review this, and see what other content could be usefully added at summary level - particularly some of the installations mentioned in Miramar_Peninsula#Communication_and_defence ↗ that I haven't yet included. One of the issues I have noted is that the history section of Wellington Harbour is now somewhat disjointed and possibly unbalanced. Maybe it just needs filling out ?_Marshelec (talk) 22:52, 25 December 2025 (UTC)

Kaikōura project - invitation to participate
@Panamitsu I would like to invite you to contribute to the Kaikōura project. The list of articles for creation and expansion is here: Wikipedia:GLAM/Kaikōura/Articles ↗
You have previously done significant work on this article: 2016 Kaikōura earthquake ↗. If you are available, perhaps you might like to add some more to this article. It has a high readership (greater than for the article about the town Kaikōura ↗ !). Some of the topics that could be covered in an expansion of this article are the effects on the Kaikōura harbour, and the recovery work. Here are some sources: https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/destinations/nz/86553719/quakelifted-seabed-hurts-new-zealand-town-reliant-on-whales-lobsters ↗,

Kaikoura harbour works to cost $5.7m https://www.proquest.com/docview/1889980656/87F1990456974EA4PQ/3 ↗, Kaikōura harbour back in business https://www.proquest.com/docview/1962769436/87F1990456974EA4PQ/4 ↗, Kaikoura Harbour reopens one year on from quake https://www.proquest.com/docview/1963153626/87F1990456974EA4PQ/6 ↗,
Kaikoura getting back on its feet https://www.proquest.com/docview/1963438554/87F1990456974EA4PQ/24 ↗.
It would be great to have your assistance, for any of the articles related to Kaikōura and in whatever way suits you best._Marshelec (talk) 05:02, 6 January 2026 (UTC)
:Sure will have a proper look when I come back from holiday. Looks interesting! ―<span style="font-family:Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;">Panamitsu</span> (talk) ↗ 06:20, 6 January 2026 (UTC)
::I've just had a look at Wikipedia:GLAM/Kaikōura ↗ and its associated pages and the project surely does look interesting. I might have a go at improving that earthquake article in a few days. I'll also consider creating a new Kaikōura article (or a few) as creating new articles is where I get most of my Wikipedia enjoyment from. As I know very little about Kaikōura I'm not entirely sure what articles are missing but I do see the list at Wikipedia:GLAM/Kaikōura/Articles ↗ and the red links of settlements at Kaikōura District ↗, although I imagine that finding sources would be quite a challenge. ―<span style="font-family:Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;">Panamitsu</span> (talk) ↗ 06:43, 10 January 2026 (UTC)
:::@Panamitsu Thanks, that's great. If you prefer creating new articles, then another place to look is List of historic places in Kaikōura District ↗. The individual listings currently don't have their own article, and some might warrant it. Also, there is Kaikōura Museum ↗ and the Kaikoura Star ↗ as targets for new articles. (Cloventt is working on a draft for Takahanga Marae ↗.) Another possibility that is not in the table at present is an article about the ecotourism business Encounter Kaikōura. It has a long history of providing dolphin encounters and albatross watching tours. It was founded around the same time as Whale Watch Kaikōura and has made a major impact on tourism in the town. Marshelec (talk) 06:59, 10 January 2026 (UTC)
::::@Panamitsu Another idea that has just occurred to me is to create a new article about Ohau Point (around 21 km north of Kaikōura). There are multiple interesting aspects:
::::* it is the location of a large breeding colony of New Zealand fur seals
::::* the area became well known for the "waterfall pool" a short distance up a stream from SH1 where seal pups could be seen playing close up. This was featured in a David Attenborough narrated film https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/tv-guide/73541502/New-Zealand-seal-pups-a-highlight-of-new-David-Attenborough-documentary ↗, https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p027ntcs ↗
::::* the area suffered major damage in the 2016 earthquake, but the colony has continued

Fixing problems with Hāpuku River in OpenStreetMap
@Prosperosity I have recently done some improvements to Hāpuku River ↗. However, there are frustrating problems with how it is defined in OpenStreetMap. This is not urgent, but I would like some assistance to fix this. Ideally, you would help me to fix the problems myself as a learning exercise, via an online session, or alternatively I would observe as you fix them. The problems seem to be:
- there is a waterway type relation https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/8719543#map=13/-42.29668/173.69628 ↗ that is classified as "main" but in the upper reaches of the river it goes off on a branch to the west, but that is not actually the main course of the river as far as I can see - the main course actually goes north for a considerable distance from the branch point, and past Lake Hapuku up into the high headwaters.
- the main course of the river to the north of the branch point is defined, right up to a high elevation that could be considered as the source, but this Way is not part of the relation, and therefore does not show in the interactive map in Wikipedia
I lack the experience and confidence to resolve these problems, but feel that I would learn a lot from this example, if I could get some guidance. (To be honest, I find interaction with OpenStreetMap surprisingly difficult). If you are able to help me out, could you suggest some days and times that would work for you ? Many thanks, _Marshelec (talk) 08:35, 15 January 2026 (UTC)
:{{ping|_Marshelec}} How does it look now? ↗ It'll take until about 1PM for the interactive maps to update on Wikipedia, but I've matched the river's course to the one shown by LINZ (beginning just south of Surveyor Peak) and made this the main stream.
:What I did was:
:#Found where LINZ showed the river beginning and started drawing a new river way until it met up with the existing ways for the Hāpuku River.
:#Added this to the existing relation
:#Split the incorrect upper reaches way into two ways (right clicking on one of the stream polygons and splitting it), then deleted the name from the additional section and removing this way from the relation
:#Clicked on a lower section to see how main_stream was being added to the ways, then I added that to the new ways I'd added to the headwaters (I'm don't know much about how main_stream is used, but it looks like for a braided river, the main path as shown in the satellite imagery is main_stream, and any additional curves shown are listed as side_stream).
:If everything seems like it's working now for the Hāpuku, I could find a river with similar issues and show you how to change the headwaters, if you're keen? Prosperosity (talk) 19:39, 15 January 2026 (UTC)
::@Prosperosity Thanks for sorting that out. Most appreciated. At some stage, if you can find another example that is broadly similar, let me know and perhaps I can observe as you fix it, to try and learn more. :)_Marshelec (talk) 00:45, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
John Gretton Mackenzie
@Wainuiomartian In working on improvements for the Ōtari-Wilton's Bush ↗ article I have come across the name of the long-term Director of Parks & Reserves in Wellington, John Gretton Mackenzie, who served from 1918 to 1947. Mackenzie was one of the key people in the creation of the Ōtari native plant museum. Would you be interested in creating a bio article for him ? We could then link to that article from Ōtari-Wilton's Bush when describing his role. There is a useful biography of John Gretton Mackenzie in the WCC archives: https://archivesonline.wcc.govt.nz/nodes/view/888980 ↗, plus with a few minutes searching I have found a few useful sources in Papers Past, including: 22 October 1918 https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19181022.2.74 ↗, 23 September 1926

However, there are over 2,500 hits when searching for J.G. Mackenzie, so I have only seen a small proportion. There is a J.G. William Travers
@Alexeyevitch Hi, do you have any interest in early New Zealand botanists ?? If so, I recommend some significant expansion of the article
William Travers (New Zealand politician) ↗. I came across the name while searching for sources to assist me with work on articles related to the Chatham Islands. I know that there are a good number of New Zealand endemic plants with the binomial suffix "traversii", but until now, I had not searched for who this referred to. The existing biography article seems quite deficient in terms of crediting Travers with his early botanical work. Here is one source that I came across in connection with his early work in the Chatham Islands https://ia801909.us.archive.org/15/items/jstor-3014299/3014299.pdf ↗. Are you interested ? I could refer this to others, but thought I would ask you first, given your extensive work on articles about New Zealand endemic plants._Marshelec (talk) 06:58, 6 February 2026 (UTC)
:Oops, on further investigation, it appears that the New Zealand species with suffix "traversii" are named after his son Henry Travers (naturalist) ↗. However, perhaps there is still room for improvement in both biographical articles, in terms of their contribution to early New Zealand botany. See what you think .._Marshelec (talk) Marshelec (talk) 07:04, 6 February 2026 (UTC)
::Hi Marshelec. Here's my thoughts: I think bios, especially on botanists, could definitely be an area of interest for me in general, but I'm not particularly attracted to adding content or making heavy revisions to them, at least as of the time writing this. Your message can be referred to User:Dracophyllum, because I'm aware they worked on the Harry Allan ↗ page (from stub to GA), so the message might be better suited for them. I'm currently concentrating on the ''Prumnopitys taxifolia ↗'' page, for which I opened a PR. ::@Marshelec Henry Travers is an interesting chap! He was made bankrupt. He left Wellington and changed his name for 10 years (going by electoral rolls in Ancestry). Nothing to do with nature study, but fun. I have expanded the article - now not a stub? Ōhau Point - a possible new article
@Wainuiomartian I noted your mention of Ōhau Point in an expansion of the Kaikōura ↗ article. I have previously suggested to another editor that there might possibly be merit in a new article about Ōhau Point, but they decided to work on other topics. There are multiple interesting aspects of Ōhau Point:
- it is the location of a large breeding colony of New Zealand fur seals
- the area became well known for the "waterfall pool" a short distance up Ōhau stream from SH1 where seal pups could be seen playing close up.https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/afternoons/audio/2552751/ohau-point-seal-pups ↗ This was featured in a David Attenborough narrated film https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/tv-guide/73541502/New-Zealand-seal-pups-a-highlight-of-new-David-Attenborough-documentary ↗, https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p027ntcs ↗
- the area suffered major damage in the 2016 earthquake, and required huge civil works to re-establish transport links,https://fl-nzgs-media.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2022/06/Aynsley_NZGS2021_Submission_Ref-0209-1.pdf ↗ but the seal colony has survived
- massive civil works were needed to restore SH1 and deal with the effects of landslides etc,https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/107898521/famed-hau-point-seal-colony-lookout-open-again-after-2016-earthquake ↗, https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/346249/kaikoura-mayor-the-road-is-looking-pretty-good ↗ but the design of the works on SH1 at Ōhau Point included special provisions to allow travellers to stop safely and look over towards the sea, to view the breeding colony. The new parking/ rest area is raised above the seal colony and has become a popular place for visitors to safely observe a seal breeding colony.
- there is also a breeding colony of Spotted shag ↗ at Ōhau Point (and although their conservation status is "Least concern", they are declining). They are a cool bird.:)
:If it doesn't fit in any existing page, e.g. Kaikoura region, then yes, it sounds like it merits its own page. I could probably start on an article. I'll take a look when I'm at work. Wainuiomartian (talk) 23:35, 8 February 2026 (UTC)

Exploris One
@Schwede66 I have just undertaken a major rewrite and expansion of Exploris One ↗. The rationale was that I am interested in the Christchurch-based expedition cruise company Heritage Expeditions ↗. They recently announced that they have secured this vessel to add to their fleet, and that it will sail under their branding as from May next year. I decided to try and expand and update the article about this ship - currently named Exploris One ↗. In the course of expanding the article, I looked at the version of the article in the German Wikipedia to see if it had any new sources.https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploris_One ↗ I was quite misled for a time by some content in the German Wikipedia that I am certain is completely incorrect. (Although of course I had to rely on machine translation). I have firm evidence that the vessel was built from the outset as a small luxury cruise vessel for Artic cruising etc. However, the German Wikipedia article says: {{tq|The ship is a former ferry built in Finland in 1989 , which initially operated in the Baltic Sea as the Delfin Clipper. The Bremen- based shipping company Society Expeditions acquired the ferry in May 2000 after losing its ship, the World Discoverer , to Samsung Industries.}}.<br>
This is not supported by any of the sources I have found, and I am sure it is wrong. It was not built as a ferry (although the shipyard where it was built does produce passenger ferries). MS Delphin Clipper was a cruise vessel from the outset. I am not confident with what to do about this (if anything). What do you suggest ?_Marshelec (talk) 07:05, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

I thought it might be fun to launch the project at the Wikicon in Wellington. You will see that we propose campaigns on different themes over a 3 month period, to avoid the campaign becoming stale. Recognising outstanding NZ contributors to Wikimedia Commons
@Schwede66 I have had an idea about expanding the communications work of Wikimedia Aotearoa NZ to include recognition/celebration of outstanding contributors to Wikimedia Commons from Aotearoa NZ (or those from elsewhere who make outstanding contributions of content related to Aotearoa NZ). However, I am unsure how to go about identifying those contributors. Do you have any suggestions ? Perhaps just manually collating a list of users that a few of us may know from our own editing who have been major contributors ??.
On the topic of outstanding contributors, I see that User:Podzemnik who has contributed a large number of featured and quality photos has not been active for a while, although has recently responded to an Inactive Admins process: C::Administrators/Inactivity_section/Feb-Mar_2026 ↗. Do you think it would be worthwhile to ask this user if they would be amenable to either being recognised in a WANZ newsletter and Community Activity Report, or perhaps helping us to identify and celebrate other contributors in a similar way ?. Marshelec (talk) 07:37, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
:I know Podzemnik well. He's a colleague of {{u|MurielMary}}. The reason that he's become much less active is that they had a child some years ago, and family commitments eat up his time. Indeed, he would probably be the best person to identify outstanding Commons contributors, and no doubt he is the all-time top contributor to NZ media. Maybe it's easiest if MurielMary talks to Podzemnik. '''<span style="color:var(--color-base, #202122);">Schwede</span><span style="color: #FF4500;">66</span>''' 08:48, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
::That's correct, Podzemnik is busy with family life these days however I see him at work often. What message would you like me to pass on? MurielMary (talk) 09:08, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
:::@MurielMary Thanks for the feedback. The idea that I wanted to float was that Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand could develop a project to promote, build awareness and recognition of the value of Wikimedia Commons to national audience, and that one of the ways of doing this would be to recognise and celebrate the work of outstanding contributors. WANZ would need a bit of assistance in starting up the project, from someone who could identify outstanding contributors of photos of Aotearoa New Zealand. If this assistance enabled WANZ to create an initial list, the Board and staff could probably develop and manage an outreach/promotional project from that point. So the question for User:Podzemnik is whether they have the time available to assist with starting up a project, by suggesting a list of contributors to Commons who could be recognised and celebrated for their work related to Aotearoa New Zealand. This is just an initial enquiry. The idea needs to be tested, and if it is viable, have it included in WANZ strategy and operational plans a bit later in the year._Marshelec (talk) 11:57, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
::::OK, sure, I'll let you know when I've had a chat with him. MurielMary (talk) 22:00, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
:::::Kia ora, this was Podzemnik's reply to the question of other contributors to Commons: ''I can’t recall any other “unknown” NZ editors right now, sorry about that. If I manage to recall someone, I’ll let you guys know!'' He also mentioned that he is doing less photography while out tramping these days as what with carrying the family tramping gear for himself and his son, there's not much space for his camera gear as well. However, he has a huge backlog of images he hasn't uploaded yet. MurielMary (talk) 08:37, 17 May 2026 (UTC)

A new bio article for Nigel Roberts - managing CoI ?
@Schwede66 Can you please give me some guidance about using the Articles for Creation process as a means of managing CoI. I am considering writing a new bio article for the well-known Victoria University academic and political scientist Nigel Roberts (now an Emeritus Professor). I am confident that I can demonstrate that Nigel Roberts meets notability requirements. However, I know Nigel quite well through his membership of my athletics club. If there was a published article for him already, I would refrain from editing it because of the CoI. However, if the Articles for Creation process is an acceptable means of handling a CoI like this, I am willing to put the work into developing a new draft bio article for AFC submission, where independent editors would review and accept it (or otherwise). What do you recommend as appropriate steps, and where should I declare the CoI ? If I went ahead, the article title would probably be Nigel Roberts (academic) or similar, because there is already a Nigel Roberts ↗. Keen for your suggestions. Marshelec (talk) 01:35, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
:Yes, AfC is a suitable venue for COI bio creation. You'd declare your COI on the talk page underneath the project banners using <code><nowiki>{{Connected contributor}}</nowiki></code>. Convention with using diacritics
@Schwede66 Kia ora, I need some guidance. This is something I really ought to know, but I have realised that I am actually uncertain. The name Ōtari, has been spelled with a diacritic in the majority of reliable sources for several years now. However, older sources use the plain O. For content in an article such as Ōtari-Wilton's Bush ↗, if we make a historic reference in the text, back to early days when the macron was not used, do we:
# use the macron consistently in every instance of the word in the text (but leave the plain spelling that may appear in the title in the reference), or
# use the plain spelling in the text when referring to historic events/periods when the macron would not have been used, and the spelling with the macron for content about recent times
I looked for guidance, and so far, I have only found this: Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Spelling#Archaic_spelling ↗. I am not sure that this is strictly applicable. So I need help. I am sure you will have come across this question and dealt with it previously, so I am keen to hear back. Many thanks in anticipation. Marshelec (talk) 22:46, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
:I don't think that there is consensus around this. The third option is to always use the macron consistently. MOS:CONFORM ↗, while not specifically mentioning macrons, would be met in spirit if you used that option.
