Euphonium

Hi, I was listening to a delightful Euphonium piece on RNZ this evening, and thought I would look up the history of the instrument. The piece was Sparke's Pantomine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPpSalT9AMY ↗, although the performance was New Zealand SO/Bruce Hangen, Anyway, I looked at the article Euphonium ↗. It is in need of some care and attention. I know you have many other interests, but perhaps you could find some time to give this article a boost ? Marshelec (talk) 05:24, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
:@Marshelec I'd love to :) I'm in the middle of a keyed trumpet ↗ and bugle ↗ stint at the moment, but I'll get to it soon — Jon (talk) 05:30, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
:Hi - feel free to take a look. I'm considering merging most of what's in the §Name section into the §History section. I haven't touched the §Types section yet. Let me know if you have any ideas! — Jon (talk) 23:39, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
: {{ping|Marshelec}} I've been chipping away at Euphonium ↗ over the last couple of months, and I think it's in much better shape now. I'll probably nominate it for WP:GA ↗ soon, what do you think? — Jon (talk) 00:24, 26 September 2025 (UTC)

Your GA ↗ nomination of A-flat clarinet ↗

The article A-flat clarinet ↗ you nominated as a good article ↗ has been placed on hold 20px|link= ↗. Greetings and query

Hi there, I don't think we've had the pleasure, which is unusual since we seem to be working in similar realms. In any case, awesome job with your low brass articles thus far—please let me know if I can ever be of assistance: researching, reviewing etc.
Re https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Codex_Arundel&curid=26521191&diff=1230868219&oldid=1226774441 ↗, how so? The link seems to be working for me; how'd you hear about this? '''<span style="font-family:Lucida;"><span style="color:darkred">Aza24</span><span style="color:#848484"> (talk)</span></span>''' 04:59, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
: Hi - thanks! It can often seem quite lonely out here in the outer spiral arms of the brass instrument galaxy. I guess with that edit I was making a less-than-good-faith remark about how relying on the Internet Archive to prop up previous efforts by the British Library to host their own content in the seemingly better-funded past is not a great look for them, or for the articles trying to source or cite it. Perhaps I've been reading too much lately about how the internet as we once knew it is disappearing and being replaced by pointless JavaScript-only "apps" whose only purpose is to stop you from downloading Instagram images or YouTube videos without first signing up, logging in, donating everything you see think feel or visit to unaccountable transnational tax-evading megacorporations owned by sociopathic grasping billionaires, and having adverts rammed down your neck, to the point where Google won't even let you run an ad blocker in Chrome; or by vast quantities of hollow, meaningless drivel generated by ChatGPT; forums have been replaced by Reddit and Discord, proprietary applications with no ability to link, search, cite, or even ''read'' without an account. I have similar misgivings about Exlibris, which compared to just running Koha ↗ makes library catalogues awful, slow, inaccessible ↗, un-linkable piles of pointless JavaScript-ridden unusable crap. Google Arts & Culture is the same. Gosh, this seems to have turned into a rant. Sorry! — Jon (talk) 21:06, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
::My own apologies for the late response. Very interesting observations and I suppose I agree for the most part. Google Arts & Culture has always appeared as a bizarre hodgepodge of well presented information, but at the same time mostly a mirror for other sites. I suppose their high-quality images can be exceptional though. '''<span style="font-family:Lucida;"><span style="color:darkred">Aza24</span><span style="color:#848484"> (talk)</span></span>''' 20:35, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Your reversion of my edit to "Ophicleide"

Greetings and felicitations. I noticed that you reverted my edit ↗ to Ophicleide ↗ but did not give a reason. I'm wondering why? And if you want to keep the changes, please at least add a bullet in front of the inline commons template. —DocWatson42 (talk) 13:30, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

:Apologies, amended as per. — Jon (talk) 23:32, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

History of brass bands in NZ

Here are a couple of announcements about the project - National Library Lilburn Research Fellow in 2025 https://natlib.govt.nz/about-us/media/samantha-owens-named-as-lilburn-research-fellow-2025 and in The Post https://www.thepost.co.nz/culture/350346544/depth-look-history-brass-bands-nz Gertrude206 (talk) 01:42, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

:Excellent, thanks for those! Meanwhile, as you suggested, I've uploaded images and edited the NZD $1 ↗ and $2 ↗ banknote articles. — Jon (talk) 00:48, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

F Attachment problem

Hello Jonathanischoice, I see you reverted my edit on Flugelhorn ↗ but F attachment ↗ doesn't work. I have therefore edited as per your recommendation, but this is part of a larger problem, see:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Trombone#%22F-attachment%22_Wikilinks_don't_work Clark42 (talk) 17:15, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

:@Clark42 I don't understand the problem you're having, since F attachment ↗ redirects to Trombone#Valve attachments ↗ anyway? Jon (talk) 19:55, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
::No, that was the edit I just made. Before that, as I found it weeks ago and what you reverted to, the Wikilink pointed to F attachment ↗, a page that no longer exists and has been replaced by a redirect page pointing to Trombone ↗, thus taking those who click on it to the top of the Trombone page. I found several such Wikilinks on other pages and didn't know the best solution. Clark42 (talk) 11:34, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
:::@Clark42 but F attachment ↗ redirects to the Valve attachments section of the trombone article, which is correct. It's okay for it to redirect to sections of articles. You don't need to replace instances of "F attachment". Jon (talk) 02:47, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
::::"but F attachment redirects to the Valve attachments section of the trombone article..."
:::: - yes, that's the change I made to the F attachment redirect page on 16 July 2024. It didn't seem to work at the time (maybe a caching issue in my browser?) but now it seems OK, so I'll add a note that it's fixed on the Trombone Talk page. Clark42 (talk) 13:26, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
::::: Ah, I see the problem, we need to subst the {{tl|anchor}} in the Trombone article heading, so that Trombone#F-attachment ↗ and Trombone#F attachment ↗ should work now. — Jon (talk) 21:34, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

Example of music snippets in Wiksource

Hi Jon, based on your question about using Lilypond in enWikisource, this is a book I did a little while back: Fugue ↗. So, I'm sure we can manage a manual on the Serpent. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 01:02, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
:Wow, that's excellent! I guess this ↗ would need to go in frWikisource... — Jon (talk) 20:38, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
: {{ping|Beeswaxcandle}} for an extra challenge, I'm doing my first Wikisource in French, here ↗. Luckily, there is very little text, and a bunch of Lilypond which will hopefully work the same in any language. Also, how is it 2024 and we don't have a cursive script font ↗ yet after ''seven years''? — Jon (talk) 04:40, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
::Well, you're never one to back down from a little challenge like that. In respect of the font, the goal is to reproduce the content rather than the little details of the look. As a result, I'm happy to not have a cursive script font. I really don't need to add that battle to those I already have to deal with. Have fun, Beeswaxcandle (talk) 08:41, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
:::{{ping|Beeswaxcandle}} I know you're busy and it's Christmas season, but would you be able to have a quick squizz at this ↗ over on fr.wikisource, I know it's in French but so far it seems similar enough and I've been able to muddle along. The first thing is that I think I've somehow ended up with .djvu in the title of the book, and page name, by mistake... is that a simple move page request? I've missed out 6-7 pages of price catalogue, which looks absolutely horrendous to try and reproduce! I haven't really figured out what the different red yellow and blue page colours mean. Anyway, cheers and Merry Christmas! — Jon (talk) 03:52, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
::::Hi Jon, the extension of .djvu is correct in the Livre: (Index:) and Page: namespaces. This is based on the filename. It won't show in Mainspace when the pages are transcluded. I would count the price catalogue as advertisements and ignore. The colours: red means "not proofread" or not ready for second eyes; yellow is "proofread" or ready for second eyes to look at; blue is "problematic" or an image is needed or need to think more about the page; there is also green, which is "validated" or second eyes have gone over the page; and gray, which is for blank pages. Ornette picture with low-A alto

The caption says it's a Selmer, but is it? I can't make out the logo, and the finish on it looks like it's a much more recent horn than an old Mark VI with a low-A. He could obviously have had one refinished I guess. - Special-T (talk) 13:38, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

:@Special-T on Commons there's several photos e.g. :File:Ornette Coleman.jpg ↗ of him playing the same horn, with the Selmer logo, and the three-way key guard on the bell (normally 2) because of the extra tone hole for the A. Jon (talk) 19:14, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

Hiatus

Dear wiki friends, if anyone is wondering why I've been a bit quiet it's because 9 days ago I was rushed to the local ED with a subarachnoid hæmorrhage ↗ (SAH). But unlike all the poor folks who have had to deal with the complications and poor outcomes from aneurysms described in that article, mine was a ''perimesencephalic'' SAH, which originates in a ''vein'' which quickly self-heal in most cases and can now be reliably identified if the CT is done within 6 hours. This was the most terrifying thing in my life, I am unbelievably lucky and so thankful. I'm getting better every day, and can now function normally for short bursts. But that article terrified everyone I knew who read it, and there is no mention of ''perimesencephalic'' hæmorrhage anywhere. They make up about 10% of cases, have different risk factors, present otherwise identically, are conclusively identified by CT and MRI angiogram, but they have generally much better prognosis, and treatment is as for other SAH assuming successful treatment of the aneurysm.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) |work=The Internet Book of Clinical Care |first=Josh |last=Farkas |publisher=University of Vermont ↗ |date=2022<!--page last updated--> |url= https://emcrit.org/ibcc/sah/ |access-date=3 June 2025}}</ref> When I'm a bit better, I'd like to fix it. Anyway, cheers. Let's all make this encyclopædia awesome. — Jon (talk) 01:02, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

Prospective GA review, with caveat

Hello, I was excited to see your GA nomination for Tenor horn ↗ - as a longtime horn ↗ player, I hope I can do a good review for you. I haven't started it, however, because I'm coming down with a wicked cold. Do you mind if I start the review and sit on it for a few days as I get better, or would you like to let it ride? Best, chickenpox4dinner (talk) 18:14, 5 January 2026 (UTC)

:@Chickenpox4dinner Hi, thanks for picking it up. I'm happy either way, up to you. — Jonathanischoice (talk) 18:53, 5 January 2026 (UTC)

Hi Jonathan, thanks for your thanks regarding my alphorn photo. Thanks also for your excellent photos, quite amazing!

I don't quite understand paragraphs 2 and 3 on Pedal tone ↗ even though I used to play the trombone. If you do, could you improve them? Theosch (talk) 08:18, 12 June 2026 (UTC)
