Introduction to contentious topics

{{ivmbox | image = Commons-emblem-notice.svg |imagesize=50px | bg = #E5F8FF | text = You have recently edited a page related to '''the topics of Kurds and Kurdistan, broadly construed''', a topic designated as '''''contentious ↗'''''. A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as ''contentious topics''. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee ↗. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators ↗ have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit <strong>carefully and constructively</strong>, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Battle of Altun Kupri and North Altun Kupri (2017)

During the 2017 Kirkuk campaign, there were two related engagements near Altun Kupri town in Kirkuk Governorate.

Altun Kupri town

On 20 October 2017, Iraqi government forces, including the Iraqi Army and Federal Police, captured Altun Kupri town and its main checkpoints. This action was part of the larger Battle of Kirkuk ↗, in which Baghdad regained control of the Kirkuk Governorate. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ↗ ordered troops not to advance further toward Erbil ↗, citing the need to protect civilians and respect the 2003 perimeters of the disputed area.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/10/21/iraq-forces-in-full-control-of-kirkuk-province|title=Iraq forces in full control of Kirkuk province|publisher=Al Jazeera}}</ref> The capture of the town is therefore widely considered an Iraqi victory.

North Altun Kupri (Pirdê area)

Fighting also occurred north of Altun Kupri town in the Pirdê area, where Peshmerga forces engaged Iraqi units attempting to advance toward Erbil. According to multiple sources, Peshmerga units successfully halted the Iraqi advance in this northern sector, preventing further movement beyond the disputed Kirkuk Governorate.<ref name="K24">{{cite web |last=Kurdistan24 |date=2024-10-20 |title=Seven years since epic battle of Perde - how Kurdish Peshmerga's brave stand halted Iraq's advance |url=https://www.kurdistan24.net/en/story/807057 |access-date=2024-12-13 |website=Kurdistan24 |language=en}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.arknews.net/en/node/39471|title="Pirde Epic" in its fifth year...when the Peshmerga executed the plans of the dreamers to eliminate the Kurdistan experience|website=ARK News}}</ref> Kurdish media have nicknamed this engagement the **“Epic Battle of Pirdê”**, emphasizing its significance as a successful defensive action despite the overall Iraqi control of the region.

Result

Altun Kupri town: Iraqi tactical victory
North Altun Kupri (Pirdê area): Peshmerga tactical victory
Strategic outcome: Baghdad controlled the town, while Kurdish forces prevented further advance toward Erbil.
So this person who edited the page has mixed up the issue of the Battle of Kirkuk 2017, while the battle took place north of Altun Kupri, where the Peshmerga prevented the Iraqi force from advancing further Masare012 (talk) 12:19, 14 March 2026 (UTC)

:Yes, I agree with your assessment. However, I am not willing to edit the page again at the moment, as it seems that some editors are repeatedly making changes that significantly alter the narrative and are not supported by the cited sources or, as you noted, mix up separate incidents or battles. PawWiki2 (talk) 19:51, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
::Thank you for the feedback. My intention is simply to clarify that the fighting north of Altun Kupri (Pirdê area) is a separate engagement from the capture of Altun Kupri town during the 2017 Kirkuk campaign. Several sources describe the Peshmerga halting Iraqi forces in that northern sector. I would appreciate further input from other editors on how best to represent this distinction in the article. A tag has been placed on :Air campaign in Iranian Kurdistan ↗ requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. About Battle of Zakho ↗

Some sources suggest that Coalition forces effectively controlled Zakho after arriving on 20 April 1991. For example, accounts note that the city was largely abandoned when coalition forces entered, and by 26 April it was described as enjoying its first period of stability and security.<ref>{{cite web |title=Human Rights Watch World Report 1992: Iraq and Occupied Kuwait |website=Human Rights Watch |publisher=Human Rights Watch |date=1992 |url=https://www.hrw.org/reports/1992/Iraq926.htm |access-date=29 April 2026}}</ref>The Peshmerga entered Zakho

Based on this, I was wondering whether the infobox result might need clarification, or whether it would be more appropriate to describe the outcome in a more neutral or nuanced way (for example, reflecting Coalition involvement rather than only Iraqi government control). Kurdistan Region ↗

I see you've made major changes to the article, my concerns are primarily in you underscoring Kurdistan Region's ''substantial autonomy'', including by adding in content from the year 2014. I disagree with the claim that it enjoys substantial autonomy. I would like to inform you, in case you are not aware, that KRI's status has significantly changed in the last decade. Here are a few sources for this claim: '''Baghdad Squeezes Kurdistan Region on Legal and Economic Fronts, Prompting Crisis''' https://agsi.org/analysis/baghdad-squeezes-kurdistan-region-on-legal-and-economic-fronts-prompting-crisis/ ↗ '''Erbil-Baghdad relations: Twenty years since the regime change''' https://www.ispionline.it/en/publication/erbil-baghdad-relations-twenty-years-since-the-regime-change-121414 ↗ '''The Rise and Fall of Kurdish Power in Iraq''' https://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/rise-and-fall-kurdish-power-iraq ↗

All of these sources underscore how KRI's autonomy has ''decreased''.

Here is a list of authorities KRI does not possess anymore (but it did before):

# The right to '''export ''' oil/gas and the right to '''control ''' the oil/gas industry.https://dayan.org/content/autonomy-curbed-kurdish-oil-exports-hit-snags-turkey-and-baghdad ↗ Even though these are two separate authorities, I've morphed them into one for convenience. Since the International Court of Arbitration ruled in favour of Iraq in 2023, KRI has been unable to export its own oil. This led to even more trouble for KRI, when Baghdad not only demanded the exclusive right to export KRI oil, but the right to full control over oil business contracting in KRI, which they eventually succeeded in, leading to Baghdad effectively owning the oil/gas industry in KRI today. Exploration, management, production and exporting of oil/gas is conducted by the government of Iraq today, de jure and de facto, by SOMO ↗ and by North Oil Company ↗, and North Gas Company. https://www.rudaw.net/english/kurdistan/040320266 ↗ This has lost KRI its control of over 90% of its economy. Quite a loss of authority, don't you agree?
# The''' exclusive right to pass laws within KRI'''.https://eismena.com/en/article/the-federal-supreme-courts-role-in-iraqs-slide-into-authoritarianism-2024-04-05 ↗ Kurdistan Region Parliament ↗ does not have ''exclusive ''authority to pass laws in KRI anymore. Since 2023, the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq ↗ has had the authority to '''amend Kurdistan Region's legislation''', something that the Kurds at the time interpreted as FSC becoming a kind of legislative authority for the KRI (superseding the Kurdish parliament). This led to an outcry at the time and is surely something someone well-versed with Kurdish issues would be aware of.
# The right to''' keep its revenue''' (oil and non oil).https://www.kurdistan24.net/en/story/885403/baghdad-sent-only-41-of-kurdistan-regions-financial-entitlements-krg-report ↗ Kurdistan Region is not entitled to its share of the federal budget without providing Baghdad '''all of its revenue'''. In other words, KRI does not have the exclusive right to ''keep ''its revenue anymore -- something it did before. The demand is not something new, and existed before as well, however, because KRI cannot ''today ''survive economically without the federal budget (due to losing authority number 1), which means KRI is ''today ''forced to provide Baghdad with all of its revenue, de jurehttps://www.spglobal.com/energy/en/news-research/latest-news/crude-oil/022224-iraqi-federal-court-ruling-deals-another-blow-to-kurdistan-regional-governments-oil-autonomy ↗ and de facto.
# The right to its '''own laws'''. This relates to the aforementioned, since 2025, KRI has been forced to implement Iraq's pension law.https://peregraf.com/en/news/8673 ↗
Donkeykong71818 (talk) 13:52, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

:A reduction in the Kurdistan Region's powers over the past years does not mean it no longer enjoys substantial autonomy. "Substantial autonomy" does not imply full sovereignty over all economic and legal domains. If it did, very few autonomous regions would qualify. What matters is whether the Region continues to exercise meaningful self governance in comparison to other autonomous regions, and it clearly still does. By comparison, regions such as Catalonia or Scotland lack similar powers in some areas, for example they do not have independent security forces, yet are still described as autonomous, which supports characterizing the Kurdistan Region's autonomy as substantial.
:The developments you mention, particularly since 2023, do indicate a significant erosion of authority in areas such as oil policy and fiscal independence, and that is already partially reflected in the article ↗.
:Additionally, I refer to WP:NPA ↗, as the statement "this is surely something someone well-versed with Kurdish issues would be aware of" is not appropriate for a Wikipedia discussion, as it shifts the focus from content to the contributor and can be interpreted as a personal remark about competence. PawWiki2 (talk) 15:00, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
::Saying something general about information someone should be aware of is not a personal attack, but nice try though. Donkeykong71818 (talk) 03:52, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
::KRI autonomy has not only degraded but it as a whole is under threat of eradication. Take a look at this article https://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/house-divided-can-kurdistan-preserve-its-autonomy ↗. This author has described the situation as “autonomy hangs in the balance”, which is a far cry from your claim of substantial autonomy. Donkeykong71818 (talk) 03:59, 5 May 2026 (UTC)

Shamil Ali Bedirkhan

Hello @PawWiki2, I wanted to ask if you could create an article about Shamil Pasha ↗ for the English Wikipedia. Just if you have time and interest.

Western Iran clashes (2026–present)

Amazing work on this article ↗! It is very detailed. Militant.Insurgency (talk) 22:52, 2 July 2026 (UTC)

:Thank you very much! PawWiki2 (talk) 10:28, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
::Not to violate WP:CENTRAL ↗, but I did want to say FWIW that the article truly reads great and the topic is clearly well researched 😄 I just don't believe these two need to be split into separate articles, hence the merger discussion. IMO a reader wanting to learn more about what's going on between Iran and the Kurds probably isn't interested in just the politics or just the fighting, but want the whole picture if possible (especially if they don't know to look for a second article). No matter the result of the discussion through, the encyclopedia is truly a better place because of your research. Cheers from a sunny North Carolina! :::Hi, thanks for the kind feedback. I see your point, and I appreciate the constructive discussion. I think we've both made our arguments in the merger discussion, so let's wait and see where the consensus lands. Greetings! PawWiki2 (talk) 10:10, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
