Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge ↗ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge ↗. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic) ↗. For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon ↗, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --<span style="font-family:Old English Text MT;">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</span>''Che dicono a Signa?'' ↗'''Lo dicono a Signa.''' ↗ 05:56, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Ketene thing

Hello Edward. Glad to see you participate in the chem articles. We need people like you, and some skepticism because these articles are often highly imperfect. I am an editor who adds lots of content about industrial routes, but my knowledge is often based on reading, not direct experience. So your question is warranted. Here is a quote from Ullmann's Encyclopedia on Industrial Chemistry "Thermal Cleavage of Acetone. This variation of the ketene process (cleavage of acetone into ketene and methane [59]) has no economic significance for the manufacture of acetic anhydride today." The article emphasizes the thermal dehydration of acetic acid to give ketene, which then adds to AcOH to give the anhydride. --Smokefoot (talk) 01:21, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
:It was earlier editor that tagged the article, I just spotted that the template used contained a deprecated parameter (missing the "reason="), unfortunately my own knowledge of chemistry is a little more limited EdwardUK (talk) 01:35, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
::Thanks for the comment. I will address the question. --Smokefoot (talk) 01:38, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Acetaldehyde thing

Agreed that using acetylene and Hg is a little strange. My understanding is that Hg and acetylene routes are current only in countries - PRC, Soviet bloc - that tolerate a lot of pollution. They often rely on cheap coal as a hydrocarbon surrogate. But in the bad old days, lots of mercury was often used even in the West to induce reactions of alkynes. Here is a quote from another section of Ullmann's Encyclopedia (doi:10.1002/14356007.a01_031.pub2): "Wet Oxidation Process (Hoechst). The wet oxidation process ... was operated... until the changeover to ethylene.... In this method, iron(III) sulfate is added to reoxidize the mercury metal to the mercury(II) salt..." One of the angles I have taken in writing these basic chemicals articles is to highlight large scale routes that today might seem implausible.--Smokefoot (talk) 01:38, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
:As with the "Acetic acid" article an editor called Riventree originally tagged the section with "citation needed" EdwardUK (talk) 01:53, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Barton Paul Levenson and other Author Pages

Hi EdwardUK

I've neglected the author pages I edit, which is mostly writers from Cooperstown NY and Pittsburgh, PA.
Several of the pages I edit have stale refs or edits have left some of them a little choppy.
I saw you put on a ref improve on the BPL page back in February.
It's going to take me a while but I've just finished my Master's so I have time again.

Peace be the Botendaddy

Judi Dench

Hello, I don't know how RS 'Talk Talk' is, but assure you that, as it says on the 'Central' ↗ page, ''In 1989 it was incorporated as a higher education college in its own right and funded directly by government. ''Central had been offering degrees since 1986'', firstly validated by the Council for National Academic Awards and from 1992 by the Open University.''

No 'Central' student received any kind of degree until 1986. Were this not the case, why is there no mention of a degree on the Harold Pinter, Laurence Olivier, the three Redgraves etc etc etc pages and no mention of a degree on any other Judi Dench source (one of the most written about modern actresses). Central offered a practical training, not an academic course and only began awarding degrees when it became 'necessary' for Govt funding reasons. The same was true of all major UK drama schools until the 1980s. Pincrete (talk) 23:44, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
: I agree that it would be expected for it to be mentioned in more sources - there are a couple of other articles (broadway.com) (thestage.co.uk) that state "first class degree" (who may have used talktalk as their source), but other such as Darling Judi (Miller) only go as far as saying she graduated. I had reinserted it as it matched the source given, but based on what you have written and the possible unreliability of the source I think it is probably best to leave it out. EdwardUK (talk) 00:33, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

::'Graduated' is used on quite a number of Central alumni articles, in the pre-1986 context it simply means 'completed and left'. Previous to 1986, 'Central' awarded diplomas, which had no real value outside of the world of acting. This was true of almost all drama courses - and some other arts courses (eg musical instruments). Most of these drama school courses made the change as it became necessary for a course to be recognised as a degree course in order for students to get grants ''(and later loans)''. In the case of 'Central', the entire acting course staff resigned circa 1984 in protest at the change forced on them by the Governors, to what had previously been a wholly practical training, but which became a 'faux academic' course in their opinion. Central had also trained teachers and speech therapists and theatre techs, but they were awarded various forms of certificate. Pincrete (talk) 10:39, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi EdwardUK, thank you very much for your all infobox corrections. One question… how are you identifying the errors? Best Regards DynamoDegsy (talk) 22:00, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

:For rugby infoboxes there is a list of errors here: :Category:Pages using infobox rugby league biography with unknown parameters ↗. When you go to an article you can click edit and then preview and it gives a red message at the top of the article such as: "Warning: Page using Template:Infobox rugby league biography with unknown parameter "nickname" (this message is shown only in preview)." To let you know what the error is. Then I either correct or remove the parameter based on whether it’s a simple typo, incorrect, already covered in the main text, or needs a citation. Thanks for you fixing up Lady Bomanjis page. I write to seek your help in keeping this page alive. Just read my talk page and you will understand whats going on. Aldermaston Pottery - images to add - help please

Hello Edward. I have added some information to the Aldermaston Pottery page. It seems like there isn't one main person who created the page out of a special interest. So I'm just contacting you to see if you have time to help load up a couple of images.
Sorry, every time I try it takes hours and I don't succeed. I've obviously got abilities in other areas!

You'll see my entry on the page so far.

There are copies of the lists of studio assistants at Aldermaston Pottery, with an example of their potter's mark.
I found a couple at a web site called 20th Century Forum.
If you look there, scroll down, maybe on the 2nd page, and there are a couple of examples of the lists.
https://www.20thcenturyforum.com/t3346-aldermaston-pottery

I saved them as pictures on my computer but can't get any further.
I wonder if you could help?

Why did you reduce the size of the image in Sue Draheim ↗ ?

Hi Edward ---- Can you tell me what is your reason for reducing the size of the image of Sue Draheim in the article Sue Draheim ↗? Thank you. --Akhooha (talk) 18:43, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
:The picture used full image syntax rather than just the file name as suggested in the infobox documentation – see template:Infobox musical artist ↗. A forced fixed size (px) is generally only needed to enlarge small images and it overrides users preference settings for image display. To me the default size seemed adequate here – however i’ve now added the upright parameter which scales the image back to the previous size. EdwardUK (talk) 20:51, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
:: Thanks for restoring it to its original size. I'm just curious, though, since now everything looks the same as before you made any changes, what purpose was served in changing the "syntax" of the image? Thanks for your reply. --Akhooha (talk) 20:58, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
:::I can’t remember quite where i’ve read the more detailed version of it, but one reason is given in Wikipedia:autosizing images ↗ is that having a fixed image size can cause problems for certain users and devices. EdwardUK (talk) 21:14, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
:::: Hmmmm --- OK -- thanks for your quick reply.--Akhooha (talk) 21:28, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

The McCreery House

You've edited the page about the William H. McCreery House. I own that house and my wife and I operate a wedding and event venue on the property. The legal business name is simply "The McCreery House" which is what I attempted to use in the main content as well as a link to the business website. Why was that changed? Can we not link to tour business site?

BTW - I've never updated a wiki page before and I'm only interested in this one because it appears in Google searches for our business and was showing incorrect information and a terrible picture which does not encourage people to visit our website. I'm mainly interested in directing traffic there, but I would think accurate information in Wikipedia is also important?

Cmarsh80501 (talk) 17:15, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

:The article is primarily about the building rather than the business that operates there, but I can see why you would like to improve it. I changed the article because articles usually start with the full name in bold, which in this article is the registered name of historic building. The website link is still there at the bottom of the article, but I have now also added it to the infobox, and added: "also known as '''The McCreery House'''" to the first line.
:To encourage people to want to find out more (and visit the website) the article would benefit from being longer - firstly adding sections on the architecture and history of the building – there is lots of info given in the nrhp listing (reference 3) which could be useful, and then add a section about its current use. The WikiProject National Register of Historic Places WP:NRHP ↗ has links to good articles on similar buildings and a guide that may help. EdwardUK (talk) 18:14, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

: The formatting would have been fine if used somewhere else in the article, but in the infobox it only needed the filename without the square brackets or the use of thumb. there are lots of useful guides for editing on the Help:Contents ↗ page. EdwardUK (talk) 16:58, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Images in infoboxes

Hello! Thank you for fixing Solrad 1 ↗. My issue with other photos is that, because they are large or long, they make an infobox unwieldy, which is why I've sometimes used thumbnails. Do you have a recommendation on how to address this issue? Thank you! --Neopeius (talk) 17:05, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
:Most infoboxes have parameters such as image_size= or upright= that can be used to adjust the display size. Template:Infobox spaceflight ↗ uses image_size= which defaults to 220px wide if not set, but can be changed if needed – for tall images it is also possible to set the height rather than width by putting an x before the number – for example x250px - EdwardUK (talk) 17:24, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Historic Environment Scotland Template

Hi - you've been good enough in the past to go through a few articles I wrote and replace my 'cite web' reference templates with the 'Historic Environment Scotland' template. Since then I've been trying to avoid making other people tidy up after me by using that template myself when writing articles - I wonder, though, whether I'm doing it wrong.

Generally, when I insert a ref, I use the 'cite' tool above the editing window, and select one of the standard templates from the drop-down list - web, news, book or journal. This is fairly easy and convenient, but since you changed my first few article, whenever I now cite a Historic Environment Scotland template, I find myself going back to an old article, finding the template you added, copy/pasting it into my new article, and manually changing the code with the right details. Essentially, it's significantly more of a hassle than just citing it as a standard web reference.

I'm sure I'm missing something here - is there a smart/easy way for me to insert a template like that without going through a whole load of hassle? A script I have to install or something? Any tips would be much appreciated. Cheers <span style="font-family:Impact;color:#294;">Girth</span><span style="font-family:Impact;color:#42c;">Summit</span> (blether) 18:24, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

:I not aware of any tools or scripts for making it easier to use the template, also I haven't seen anything similar for use with the NHLE template (which the Historic Environment Scotland template is based on) – my method for using such templates is to cut and paste from a text document I've created which has blank copies of the non-standard cite templates I use most often. EdwardUK (talk) 22:39, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
::Thanks for that - I guess I could do something similar. Just for my understanding then, what's the rationale for using the template instead of a standard web ref? It's only slightly more of a ballache than inserting a regular ref, so I'm happy to do it if it's of any actual benefit, but I'm not clear on how it helps. Cheers <span style="font-family:Impact;color:#294;">Girth</span><span style="font-family:Impact;color:#42c;">Summit</span> (blether) 18:02, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
::Just noticed on your userpage that you actually created the template - I'd probably have phrased the above comments slightly differently if I'd realised that! Apologies if I've come across as moaning about it, I'm not meaning to have a go, just trying to better understand the reasoning behind it. <span style="font-family:Impact;color:#294;">Girth</span><span style="font-family:Impact;color:#42c;">Summit</span> (blether) 18:06, 5 July 2019 (UTC)

:::There are a couple of reasons of using the template – dead link management and uniform appearance.
:::The main benefit of the template is that if the website for the database changes then we only have to update the template rather than all of the pages on which it is used. In the past the databases for listed buildings across the UK have changed websites a few times, but the reference numbers for each listing stay constant. For Scotland it was "data.historic-scotland.gov.uk" before becoming "portal.historicenvironment.scot". These changes caused the standard citations to become dead links thus creating a lot of work to archive/replace each of them, whereas with the template it would have been possible to update all these pages with just a couple of edits as was done with the England template in March 2015. Currently the Scotland template is used on only about 1500 pages, but for the England template the figure is about 14000.
:::The template also produces a consistent look to these citations regardless of editor as most people will probably only use 3 or 4 main parameters (typically num, desc, and access-date) unlike with cite web where individual editors often use different combinations of author, work, website or publisher. EdwardUK (talk) 14:58, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
::::Ah - OK, I'm sold - the idea of manually changing 1,500 (let along 14,000!) pages if their website changes is... unappealing. That makes perfect sense, I'll do as you suggest and start a 'notes' page with this template on there. Thanks for explaining (and for creating the template!) <span style="font-family:Impact;color:#294;">Girth</span><span style="font-family:Impact;color:#42c;">Summit</span> (blether) 21:48, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

William Bunting (eco-warrior)

Thank you for your recent edit on the above article. You were more justified in doing that than you may have realised. I created the article and knew about that complaint at the time, but omitted it from the article for a reason. It is true that his relatives made such a complaint, but whether he was guilty or not is beside the point. The accusations became official just when a BBC team was researching for a documentary on Bunting's conservation work, and in response the team promptly withdrew plans for the programme. I understand that the withdrawal was not only about possible public exposure of vulnerable people who may have suffered, but also about rumoured suggestions of heavy bribery and/or political pressure from certain major chemical company interests whose reputation might have benefited from such revelations. I would think that this matter would fall under WP biography guidelines, so I would suggest that this kind of material is kept out of the article so long as there are living relatives who could be hurt by it. Keep up the good work. Storye book (talk) 20:02, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In ↗, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page ↗ and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Discussion on nomination for deletion of the page Duke Elvis

Hello Mr Edward, the reason I removed the deletion placed on this page by the first Editor was because she claimed that the page violates some of Wikipedia's guidelines under WP:NACTOR and it doesn't. Duke Elvis is a public and notable figure in the Nigerian movie industry and he has made a lot of contributions to the industry. He has played major movie roles in quite a number of movies and a very popular Nigerian TV series known as The Johnsons. He has a very large fanbase both online and offline in and outside Nigeria. It is obvious that the first person that placed the deletion didn't go through the page and make her research about Duke Elvis on the web through the citations and links I put on the page because barely after I created the page, she nominated it for deletion and it's for possible for a person to make a proper research about a person in less that 5mins.
I can assure you that Duke Elvis is a notable figure, please I'm new on Wikipedia and don't really know how to go about this deletion process so please could you lend a helping hand cause I don't want my effort to go down the drain. Thank you. VictorHB (talk) 21:20, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

:Thank you sir for your kind words and advice, I'll find a way to get to the deletion page to contribute to the discussion so my work go down the drain. Please also help add a discussion on the topic so the page won't be deleted because based on Wikipedia standards, Duke Elvis is a notable figure. Thank you so much. VictorHB (talk) 22:01, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

::Hello sir, please I've tried adding a discussion on the deletion page but I couldn't, I even followed what you said but still couldn't. :The article has sources – but not one of them mentions the birth date and therefore none of them can be used to verify this information – Verifiability is a core policy of Wikipedia – see WP:VERIFY ↗ – If you had read the numerous clean up messages on the page rather than constantly removing them, without dealing with the issues stated, then you would be aware of this. The unsourced information will continue to be removed by myself or other editors unless it has citations which can be used to verify it. EdwardUK (talk) 09:07, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Solo singers?

Hi EdwardUK, I saw you changing singer into solo_singer in the article Al Capps ↗, which is not really what he did. Than I looked what you changed furthermore and I wonder on what basis you change articles? Gracinha Leporace ↗ wasn't a solo singer according to the introduction of the article: "Gracinha Leporace (born Maria da Graça Leporace) is a Brazilian singer who worked extensively with her husband Sérgio Mendes and his band." You changed in Izzy Stradlin ↗ "backgroud=rhythm_guitar" into "background=solo_singer", but that is not the only thing he does. In Rob Twizz ↗ you changed rapper into solo_singer, but he is a rapper (as a matter of fact rappers exist that can only sing falsely). Can you please stop altering things massively and undo anything you changed without knowing what it is about? Ymnes (talk) 14:42, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
: please see the documentation for Template:Infobox musical artist ↗ - the background parameter only supports seven [sic] categories, and classes any vocalist as a solo_singer whether they rap, sing as an individual, or as part of a duo or group. EdwardUK (talk) 14:49, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
::A singer in a band, a session singer and a rapper are nót solo singers. Do it good or leave it empty, but don't place disinformation there please. Can't you see that Wikipedia is being made unreliable because of your actions? Ymnes (talk) 14:54, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
:::User:Baby Aline Vargas Alfonso asked you here above as well to stop your disrupting editing. You cannot simply place untrue messages when you are out of choices. Please undo all your mistakes! Ymnes (talk) 14:58, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
:::: have you read the documentation – particularly this section Template:Infobox musical artist#background ↗ – and also the archives of the infobox talk page – with regards to the previous comments on my talk page you may want to check the edit history of the related article where you would see that my edits were not the ones which were disruptive. EdwardUK (talk) 15:11, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
:::::Yes I did, but if your edits aren't true, than they simply are disruptive.
:::::What is mentioned at {{tl|infobox musical artist}}, is that your have "six" choices:
:::::*solo_singer
:::::*non_vocal_instrumentalist
:::::*non_performing_personnel
:::::*group_or_band
:::::*classical_ensemble
:::::*temporary
:::::I mentioned one case where "group_or_band" is concerned here above. But, there aren't six choices only, but there is in fact a seventh one as well: the choice to leave background empty. Now you have put data in the background field that is untrue. That surely is a problem, and you should correct all of them. It is hurting the quality of Wikipedia, when you place disinformation in cases where you are out of choices. Ymnes (talk) 15:21, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
::::::If you are not happy with the part of the documentation which states the field is mandatory then you can raise this concern on the talk page for the infobox and suggest alternative options. If you want to change any of the articles you are not happy with – go ahead, but I am ok with them using the options listed. EdwardUK (talk) 15:32, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
:::::::If rules lead to disinformation, than they should be altered. If this is not the kind of work you're capable of doing, than you should stop with it right away. Because this is your problem, not mine. Ymnes (talk) 15:38, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
::::::::It seems that we hold differing opinions on the matter - my edits were consistent with what is given in the documentation – had they not been then the coding of the infobox would have tracked them as containing parameter issues. I could propose modifications to the template, and I have not started with doing anything contradictory to the documentation because, as you point out, I am not capable of altering it myself, as is the case with any template such as this which is edit protected, nor have a made any changes to the documentation which would themselves be contradictory to the coding of the template. It is probable that many readers of the articles would be unaware of the significance of the color-coding resulting from the background parameter, and for those who notice it I am sceptical that they would be misinformed by it as it does not display any text on the article page as this is only visible in edit mode, so the only people to read the text would be editors who could be anticipated to be capable of referring to the relevant pages to clarify what is meant by the parameter, that it is a general color-coding system rather than an uniquely customisable description, whereas for more precise descriptive details there are other parameters available. EdwardUK (talk) 16:58, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
:::::::::I must fairly admit, that I wasn't aware that the content of this parameter is only changing the color of the banner, for which case my wording of disruptive editing has been too strong for what you did. I apologize for that. Although there is still disinformation at stake, because it confuses people that see that; look alone me. This is not my main Wiki (nl.wikipedia is) so I still would like to ask you to initiate an extra category with the name "other". I ask you because you are very involved with doing this task. Wikipedia is in anyway an encyclopaedia, and we should always strive to provide true information only. Ymnes (talk) 17:35, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
::::::::::No problem, I sometimes forget that other editors don’t see things the same way and have different experiences of how they view things on here. As noted – the template is protected, and anyway a notable change should not be made without discussion and consensus, but I will raise the issue on the talk page, where I suggest you may also want to comment EdwardUK (talk) 18:20, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

Pennyfield Lock

EdwardUK - thank you for your helpful suggestion for Pennyfield Lock ↗. I probably will not use it for Pennyfield Lock because I have a bad habit of writing too much, but I will use it for two other locks that I am working on. One of them, Swains Lock, will probably be ready in a month or so, and that source has added a missing piece of information—the name of the lock before Swain arrived in 1907. Cheers! Example of mode parameter in templates

At https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin//attachment.php?attachmentid=492556&d=1570495195 ↗ I belive you suggested the possibility of a mode= parameter for :Template:Soccerway ↗. Are you able to explain this a little further or point me at an example template where this has been used. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 11:00, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
:I have mostly seen it used in :Template:National Heritage List for England ↗ and its Scottish and Welsh equivalents, but unfortunately it is not a few simple lines of code that can just be copied across – it looks to come from the invoked :Template:Cite web ↗ which uses the :Module:Citation/CS1 ↗. I’m not good enough with coding to understand how this works or be sure how best to add it – but in theory it could be possible to rework the Soccerway template as a wrapper template. It may be worth seeking advice about this at Wikiproject Templates :WP:WPT ↗. EdwardUK (talk) 12:31, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Dewsbury Bus Museum

Hi EdwardUK, I see that you have removed the thumbnails of the buses in the article and have added Wiki links to similar chassis types. This will give readers the (wrong) impression that the vehicles featured in the Wiki links are actually in the museum. Can we restore the actual vehicle images please? Also, you have moved a general picture of the double deck buses into the collections area. These vehicles are not all in the collection, it is a view of vehicles that may typically be present on a museum open day so would be more appropriate at the top. The layout I used is what I would want to see it I was looking at an article on any other bus museum. Can we put it back please? 24 Barnsley Road (talk) 01:00, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
:The links to other articles were intended to give additional information on the manufacturer and type of chassis, rather than link to specific individual vehicles. The thumbnails were removed as Wikipedia is not an image repository. They appeared to be quite similar and had no captions to explain their relevance causing them to add little to the reader's understanding of the subject. On other articles on bus museums, for example London Bus Museum ↗ and Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum ↗, only a few images are used in the article to represent the collection, the rest being accessible through the commons link at the end of the article. The image of double deck buses is not well suited to top due to its size - the lead or infobox image should be no larger than upright=1.35 (equivalent to 300px). However, if it does not represent the collection then the section on Events which mentions open days seems a more suitable place for this image. EdwardUK (talk) 02:56, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Edward, I see that you have made two images into thumbnails. This seems to have had the effect of moving the images from the relevant sections (Events and Site History) and squashing them into the right hand side in the wrong sections. Is there a way of moving the thumbnails back to the left hand side in the correct sections please? Thank you 24 Barnsley Road (talk) 00:55, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
:I have added {{tl|clear}} which stops images from being pushed down out of their sections by starting new sections below any images/maps/tables, it would be possible to add <code>|left</code> to the images, but most images should be on the right side of the page, which is the default and is more readable/accessible according to the manual of style: (MOS:IMAGES ↗). EdwardUK (talk) 01:22, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

removed wrong information

Dear EdwardUK

We apologise for removing content without explaining why, if you can advise us on how to avoid that in the future it would be greatly appreciated.

We noticed that you undid a change to the Le Phonographique Wiki page. There is a claim by Mark M that he was a DJ. The source for this is an interview with John Robb; wherein Mark talks about his involvement with the club; as a former owner of the club, and after talking to other owners we can catagorically state that this is not the case and therefore would appreciate it if this claim is removed.

Kind regards

Richard Cordwell

Issue with a template you created

Hi EdwardUK, I'm currently taking Cullen House ↗ through FAC, and an issue has come up with Template:Historic Environment Scotland ↗. If you take a look in the refs of that article, ref numbers 5, 31, 32 and 33 all use the template. It appears to be showing a double space between the name of the designation, and the bit where it says "(Category A listed building)". Would you be able to check whether it's something that I'm doing wrong, or if it's an issue with the template itself and, if possible, remove the extra space? (For reference, the issue was raised in this part ↗ of the review.) Cheers <span style="font-family:Impact;color:#006400;">Girth</span>&nbsp;<span style="font-family:Impact;color:#4B0082;">Summit</span> (blether) 14:39, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

Coflein template

Thanks for adding these. I didn’t know we had a template corresponding to the Cadw one. Did you create it? I shall certainly use it going forward. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 06:17, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
:{{reply to|KJP1}} – I adapted it from the Cadw template, it is basically a copy with a few things changed or removed, so it is the creator of that (who also created the NHLE template) who did all of the hard work. Having almost identical parameters should make it simple to use if you are already familiar with Cadw and other similar templates. EdwardUK (talk) 07:45, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
::Well, it looks very good, although why RCAHMW and Cadw use different identifier numbers is beyond me. But a note of warning; I created quite a lot of Welsh building articles using the old reference style, before I thought to ask {{U|DavidCane}} to create one modelled on his Historic England template. So there are a fair number that need updating! Thanks again. KJP1 (talk) 11:10, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Dictionary of Welsh Biography template

Thank you for creating Template:Coflein ↗, and for editing numerous articles to use it. I would like to request the creation of Template:Dictionary of Welsh Biography ↗ (or Template:Cite DWB ↗), to cite the Dictionary of Welsh Biography ↗, also known as Welsh Biography Online. This is a widely-used source in Welsh biographical and historical articles.https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=%22Dictionary+of+Welsh+Biography%22&title=Special:Search&profile=advanced&fulltext=1&ns0=1 ↗https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=%22Welsh+Biography+Online%22&title=Special:Search&profile=advanced&fulltext=1&ns0=1 ↗ The template might be based on Template:Cite ODNB ↗. Regards, Verbcatcher (talk) 04:26, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
: {{reply to|Verbcatcher}} I have had a go at creating the template, but it is slightly different from the others that I have previously worked on. It is based on a mix of Coflein, Cite ODND and Cite Australian Dictionary of Biography, and uses Cite encyclopedia so it took a bit of guesswork and there may be some errors that will need to be fixed. Also some of the existing citations for have ids that appear to have changed since it used wbo.llgc.org.uk so these will need to be repaired when adding the template. EdwardUK (talk) 09:21, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
::Thank you, I wasn't expecting such quick work. Would you welcome help with rolling this out to articles – do you have a tool to automate this? Should we wait until any bugs have made themselves known? Verbcatcher (talk) 13:05, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
:::{{reply to|Verbcatcher}} Help with adding the template would be great. Ideally it will need to be added quite a few times, by different editors and using different combinations of parameters, to fully identify any bugs. I will mention it on the Wales wikiproject as some of the members may find it useful and have suggestions for improvements. One of the ways of monitoring and checking for problems will be the "monthly parameter report" of the template data but this won't be available for a couple of weeks. It is probably best to replace existing citations first before adding new ones - I have added "This external link template is underused... check here" to the documentation which can be used to find existing citations.
:::I have no tools for adding the template beyond simple copy and paste, when replacing existing citations it is usually fairly easy to edit the text and rename/remove the parameters, and when adding new citations I find it easiest to copy/paste the "commonly used" blank version and then fill it in from the website. (also if I plan to add it several times I copy the blank to a text document, add ref tags, the access-date and mode/fewer-links if needed, then use this to paste part filled versions into articles) EdwardUK (talk) 18:22, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
{{outdent}}
I'd just like to add my thanks for creating this. The ''DWB'' is an invaluable source, and I am sure I shall find the template useful. DuncanHill (talk) 05:05, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

:I have added this to several articles and have not found any problems. My observations include:
:The first letter of the id code specifies the language of the article: 's' for English (Saesneg) or 'c' for Welsh (Cymraeg). It appears that all the articles are available in both English and Welsh, with the Welsh articles at bywgraffiadur.cymru, for example:
:* https://biography.wales/article/s12-YATE-NIG-1944
:* https://bywgraffiadur.cymru/article/c12-YATE-NIG-1944
:Perhaps the article identifier should be defined as the characters that follow the 's'.
:It might be helpful to describe more of the available parameters on the documentation page, for example for DWB articles with multiple authors:
:* <code><nowiki>{{Cite DWB |id=s-PRYS-GOG-1500 |title=PRYSE family, of Gogerddan, Cardiganshire |first1=Sir William |last1=Llewelyn Davies |authorlink1=William Llewelyn Davies |first2=David |last2=Jenkins |authorlink2=David Jenkins (librarian) |year=1959}}</nowiki></code>
:which displays as:
:* {{Cite DWB |id=s-PRYS-GOG-1500 |title=PRYSE family, of Gogerddan, Cardiganshire |first1=Sir William |last1=Llewelyn Davies |authorlink1=William Llewelyn Davies |first2=David |last2=Jenkins |authorlink2=David Jenkins (librarian) |year=1959}}
:I have also used the <code><nowiki>|quote=</nowiki></code> syntax, which works as expected.
:There are thousands of citations of the dictionary, and it may not be feasible to convert them all. I have made a modest start, and have worked on a few articles with a reasonable high profile with a view to giving the new template more exposure to editors. Verbcatcher (talk) 16:53, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
::I did think of automatically including the 's' until I spotted some articles cite pages that started with 'arc_s' (used for archived versions). The template should work with the parameters from Cite encyclopedia, I initially listed only the most basic ones, but descriptions for any of the other parameters can be added if this would be helpful. I would estimate there is the potential for around 10,000 copies of the template as many of the biographies could be cited several times (for example on the articles for the person and their birth year and death year articles). There is no time limit for this so after the initial push to raise awareness (maybe 400+ translusions?) other editors will start to add it as part of their general editing. EdwardUK (talk) 19:53, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi, thank you for your continuing work modifying citations to use the template. I have added a list of 'notable' DWB contributors to the ''Dictionary of Welsh Biography ↗'' article. I assembled the list from the use of the template's author-link parameter, as reported in the monthly parameter usage report. I intend to update the list using a future report. Regards, Verbcatcher (talk) 22:11, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
:{{reply to|Verbcatcher}} Having a list of authors is a great idea, there are over 500 authors on the website, I have no idea how many have wiki articles, but probably more than 50, and once that many have an author-link the list will disappear from the monthly report. I will add a note about it to the template documentation.EdwardUK (talk) 18:32, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello Edward,

I notice you reverted my change to Stanley Hollis’s page re where he is buried from Linthorpe Cemetery back to Acklam Cemetery. If you hit the coordinates in Stanley’s Page it takes you to Linthorpe Cemetery not Acklam. My Mam is 84 and a very well educated lady and she maintains that Linthorpe is correct!

The Wales rugby website has all the results from the 2013 world cup (the same citation used for the 2017 results) and they look to be correct apart from their score in the final 44–40 which does not agree with other the match reports. On the talk page for the article, I have added a link to the European Rugby League website, they have several more of their matches – world cup, euros, and a few friendlies against France. Unfortunately, the coverage of the 2008 world cup is very limited, so I am yet to find any scores apart from the final. EdwardUK (talk) 10:37, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

Cadw template for a Scheduled monument

Morning Edward, hope you are keeping well. I'm wanting to use the Cadw Scheduled monument template for the churchyard cross at St Peter's Church, Dixton ↗. But I'm messing up with the '''uid''', i.e. <nowiki><ref>{{Cadw|uid='''???'''|class=SM|num=MM308|desc=St. Peter's Churchyard Cross, Dixton|access-date=10 January 2023}}</ref></nowiki>. Can you remind me what it is/where I find it. The Cadw SM listing is here ↗. Many thanks. KJP1 (talk) 09:24, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
:Edward - no worries. Found the answer on the very helpful page, Template:National Historic Assets of Wales ↗. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 10:10, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

Historic parks and gardens in Wales

Morning Edward - I'm back with another query. Now that the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales ↗ has statutory effect, a few of us have being doing some category creation for historic Welsh gardens. You can see where we've got to here, :Category:Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales ↗. I then tried to do this, User:KJP1/sandbox 5 Monmouthshire gardens, with the aim of ending up with list articles by principal area similar to this, Grade I listed buildings in Rhondda Cynon Taf ↗, which will be familiar to you! Where I think I've gone wrong is I used an English/Historic England template as a basis, and the reference number links don't work.

So, my questions. Do we need a new template that could link to the Cadw ↗ data or could your RCT Grade I list be adapted to work for historic gardens? We'd certainly need a Designation, I/II*/II, column and a bit of thought about what others would be best. Would this be something you could help with, or do you know where I could ask? I don't know anything about setting up templates, so I've no idea how '''big''' an ask it is. If you were able to do the template, I'd be very willing to do the grunt work of populating it, from my failed first effort. People could then use the Monmouthshire one as the basis for the others. Very grateful for any advice. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 06:06, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

:{{reply to|KJP1}} To get the reference number to link correctly the {{tl|NHAW}} template can be used (use the parameters: class=HPG, short=yes, num= and uid=). The designation entries also needs a sort key to stop them from sorting as I/II/II*. A template can be created, but is not yet needed. The list can be worked on as a wikitable and then changed to use a template later. To get something consistent with other articles my suggestion would be to create something like the wikitable for the Monmouthshire listed buildings, but replace the "Cadw listed building header" with a custom version that adds a designation column such as:

<code><nowiki>{| class="RM_table wikitable sortable plainlinks" style="width:100%; font-size:100%; margin-top:0.5em;"</nowiki></code><br />

<code><nowiki>! scope="col" | Function and Notes</nowiki></code><br />
<code><nowiki>! scope="col" | Designation</nowiki></code><br />
<code><nowiki>! scope="col" | Reference Number</nowiki></code><br />
<code><nowiki>! scope="col" class="unsortable" | Image</nowiki></code><br />

{{reflist}}

This should give the table above which is similar to the RCT I list (I also had a go at Grade II* for RCT and Merthyr, but never finished). You may which to separate out the "type" from the notes column but as almost all entries are park or garden this doesn't seem particularly useful. You could also consider separating the location and grid ref columns but placing them next to each other. I found fewer columns worked better as the notes appeared very narrow on smaller display screens. This can be experimented with to work out what works best before creating a template that may be difficult to change once in use. And it may be that minor variations in different lists are preferred, like leaving out the designation column if only one grade is listed - in which case a template my need a show=yes/no option which is harder to code. Once a layout is tested the template can be written to match it. EdwardUK (talk) 22:50, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

Monmouthshire parks and gardens

Evening Ed, The only thing about the latest change is it seems to have made the images very small. It could be looking at it on the iPad, but I don’t have the same issue with Monmouthshire Grade I’s, for example. Any ideas? KJP1 (talk) 17:23, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
:It may just be due to device settings as they all appear correct on my laptop. None of the changes should have had any impact on the images which are all set to a default size, and the coding for the parks template is the same as the listed buildings template which has not been altered. EdwardUK (talk) 17:50, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
::No worries - it'll be me. If I have a chance tomorrow, I'll look at flipping the data over. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 18:08, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

Could you please tell me why I keep getting removed as Kyle’s partner I know you didn’t do it this time but someone keeps removing me. I am doing an article on Sunday with a paper I hope that finally sorts this out. My documents are a Police Report saying we shared the same address. His death certificate shows I am/was his de facto. I put the reference in which you saw. I don’t know how Wiki works properly but people just can’t remove me. What do you suggest I do please? Mel666A (talk) 09:16, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
:{{u|Mel666A}} It was most likely removed by the other editor because they could not find any mention of it in the "cult hero" article, and the problem with the "Births, Death and Marriages" citation is that, as the source document is not online, it is difficult for other editors to verify what it contains. For more about this see Wikipedia:Verifiability ↗. If the information is also mentioned in another website or newspaper report then this would be a better source to use, or if none can be found it may be best to wait until the paper publishes its article which can then be used as a citation. This page: Wikipedia:Citing sources ↗, will be useful for how to a citation, but it could also be worth looking at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest ↗ as it may be better to place and edit request on the article talk page. ::{{reply to|Tom.Reding|MSGJ}} I have been trying to do some tidying of the rugby league related articles, categories, templates, etc, before updating the project watchlist and found that of the 22,000 tagged by the project about 1,000 are redirects. Although some of these are from page moves and merges many appear to simply be alternative names and misspellings where neither the article or its talk page have any notable history. It seems logical to me that the talk page should also redirect to the same place to centralise any discussion of the topic, and when adding the redirects there does not seem much value in retaining the project tags. In some cases, the articles tagged redirected to pages that were not relevant to rugby league, for example Widnes F.C., and for disambiguation pages, even though they may include an article about rugby league, the lists themselves do not appear to be specifically rugby league related. However, if it is preferable to keep/restore the project tags on the talk pages for these redirects then let me know I will do so.

Round with the begging bowl

Hi EdwardUK - I hope you are keeping well. I am around with the begging bowl to see if you might be able to help with a tables issue. I, and a few other editors, are currently working through this. It relates to an ANI case and is similar to a CCI clean-up, although copyvio wasn't the issue here. What I should like to be able to do is '''shade''' completed rows/groups of rows, so that users can see at a glance what needs to be done/what's been done. So, as an example, Rows 368-426 (the end) are now complete, and I'd like to shade them so that editors can see that block is done. Is this possible? Absolutely don't bother if you've not got time/it would be a complicated job, but if it's relatively easy, if you could do one, and I could then follow your example. It'll never appear in main space of course, so rough and ready would do. It's as much a morale boosting thing, rather like the Blue Peter totalizer ↗ which you'll be too young to remember, but the clean-up is a thankless task and other editors are putting a lot of graft in. Either way - all the very best. KJP1 (talk) 17:39, 15 February 2025 (UTC)

:@KJP1 shading can done by adding <code>style="background-color: lightgrey;"</code> with any of the web colors ↗ or a hex equivalent (e.g. #d3d3d3) to the start of each row. EdwardUK (talk) 18:17, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
::Muchas gracias. I shall get on and try that. KJP1 (talk) 18:19, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
:::That grey shading in Row 426 is '''just''' what I wanted. Thank you. KJP1 (talk) KJP1 (talk) 18:47, 15 February 2025 (UTC)

Canmore Trove

That is good work you have been doing on refreshing the former Canmore links to the enhanced HES template and through to trove.scot. And very necessary - I had hoped HES would softly redirect attempts to use canmore.org.uk but am disappointed to see what a mess of browser errors they have left. AllyD (talk) 06:38, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
:Since the shutdown I am just getting I privacy error message from the old links instead of it redirecting to the new site. I looked at the option of editing the canmore template to work with trove.scot but decided against this for a several reasons: Several pages on trove came back with errors messages, content of the trove records does not always match with the canmore ones, and replacing the individual templates allows me to check that they will work. Also there are pages where the text relating to the citation needs adjusting too - such as where it has "according to the canmore database...".<br/>Once I am done with citations using the canmore template, there will still be around 3000 links to the site (canmore.org.uk) made without using the template, and a further 2000 to the previous site (canmore.rcahms.gov.uk) that need to be dealt with (either update or archive depending on the link). Then there are citations from the SCRAN and ScotlandsPlaces sites that were also retired, and some old Historic Scotland citations that were never updated... by the time that is done someone might decide to completely change the database again. EdwardUK (talk) 14:26, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
::Well, at least they now seem to have improved the situation for any attempt to access a canmore.org.uk item so that it goes painlessly to the trove.scot equivalent, which takes away some of the urgency around dead-link references. Maybe the greater priority is now the older raw links to canmore.rcahms.gov.uk which is just given a ''This site can’t be reached'' message? No less arduous to refresh though! AllyD (talk) 12:39, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
:::Now that converting the templates in mainspace is done, (there are now just a few left mainly in userspace and on talkpages) the other canmore citations will go on my "to-do when I can be bothered" list. It will take more time working through them as updating is not as simple as converting the templates. And a couple of days ago I saw that International Rugby League are changing their website, so I have added that to the list for potential archiving/updating too – there is never a shortage of things to do. 25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Hi EdwardUK! I noticed that you've made several edits in order to restore a version of :List of players with 100 NRL tries ↗. The impulse to repeatedly undo an edit you disagree with is understandable, but I wanted to make sure that you're aware of Wikipedia's edit warring policy ↗. Repeatedly undoing the changes made by other users in a back-and-forth fashion like this is disallowed, even if you feel what you're doing is justifiable.

All editors are expected to discuss content disputes on article talk pages ↗ in order to try to reach a consensus ↗ with the other editors involved. If you are unable to come to an agreement&#32;at {{TALKPAGENAME:List of players with 100 NRL tries}} ↗, please use one of the dispute resolution options ↗ that are available in order to seek input from others. Using this approach instead of repeatedly reverting other editors' changes can help you avoid getting drawn into edit wars. Ill param change

Hello, EdwardUK. Can you explain the reasoning behind this edit ↗ at War guilt question ↗? Your stated reason was, "{{xt|''ill, switch unknown parameter for hidden comment''}}". However, every edit should improve the article in some way, and imho, this one does not. There is no effect on the rendered page, nor does it clarify anything for editors who can see the wikicode. So, who benefits from this edit? If the answer is 'nobody', then the edit should not be made. I won't revert it, for the very same reason: nobody would benefit. But, there is a small downside that affects me: it hits my watchlist, so I go and investigate. If there is a benefit, could you please mention it in the edit summary next time, so I don't have to waste my time looking further? And if there isn't, would it be possible to just skip making such edits until it really needs changing for some concrete reason that will improve the article? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 02:33, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
:{{reply to|Mathglot}} I made the change to remove it from Category:Pages using interlanguage link with unknown parameters, I agree the change makes little difference to the article itself, but my thought was that it would be beneficial for maintenance of the category. As I was going through the category to repair incorrect parameters (for example LT= or It= instead of lt=) I thought that the edit would save time for other editors doing the same as having it no longer appearing in the category would spare them from also searching the article for template errors. EdwardUK (talk) 16:27, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
:: That makes sense, thanks. Maybe 'reason' should be added to {{t|ill}} as a valid parameter, but that's a different discussion. Happy editing! Mathglot (talk) 17:54, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
::: I checked further, and now I see the backstory of how this all came about now, but not previously. The {{t|ill}} template has been around for a long time, but that category is a very recent addition ↗, carried out in good faith without prior discussion afaict, probably because no one could see a downside to it. For the most part, I agree with that, with the exception of the 'reason' case we are talking about here. It was discussed after the fact here ↗, when someone else did find a problem with it, subsequently worked out.
::: Unfortunately, I think they missed another problem, namely that {{para|reason}} is of clear benefit to wikitext editors across a large number of templates and historically it has not always been documented; it did not require extra coding in the template–you could 'just use it'. By adding the category, this ability to 'just use' the {{para|reason}} param without error was removed, and imho, that is a disadvantage that makes the template slightly worse. If that category is being added systematically to all templates, then that is a bigger problem.
::: The {{para|reason}} param has been sitting quietly in the transcluded {{t|ill}} at War guilt question ↗ for the last five years without any problem, and your attention would never have been drawn to it in the first place but for the recent change to add the category to the template. So, that's a template issue to be looked at, imho. The bottom line is that your edit to avoid an unwanted category is justified (and switching it into a hidden comment to preserve the editor guidance is appreciated) so basically, nothing to see here as far as you're concerned. Whether or not to change the template is a separate issue. And now you know the rest of the story. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 18:59, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
