I think you are eligible to join WP:The Wikipedia Library ↗, if you have not already done so, and hence access newspapers.com. That would greatly help you find sources for past elections. They have loads of scanned US newspapers from the 19th century. Note that I found over 2,000 hits there for ""new york" mayor election wickham", for example New York Daily Herald Sun, Oct 11, 1874 ·Page 9 has a large piece on it.
