Thank you for many recent quality articles, and today especially for Mount Edziza volcanic complex ↗, "about a group of volcanoes in British Columbia, Canada. It includes Mount Edziza, one of the highest volcanoes in Canada. The volcanic complex has been an area of volcanic activity for at least 7.4 million years, most recently in the last 2,000 years. It is also the most active volcanic system in Canada, having erupted more than 29 times during the Holocene. It also remains as one of the best-studied volcanic centres in northwestern British Columbia."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:02, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment at the tectonic plate lowercasing RM, now relisted
Thanks, and the RM at the talk page of Eurasian Plate ↗ was relisted on the 15th, so not much time left. Logic and commonsense would keep the uppercasing on the 90+ plates under discussion, but lowercasers are using the casing guideline, which some of us have countered with WP:IAR ↗ and WP:COMMONSENSE ↗ which is under fairly intense discussion. If you agree with this approach, or even have more comments, your additional participation may be useful. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:24, 18 October 2024 (UTC)

Thank you today for Volcanism of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex ↗, "about volcanism of a volcanic complex in British Columbia, Canada, that has been erupting episodically for at least the last 7.4 million years. I'm renominating it for FA because there was no consensus for promotion in the last FAC, not to mention there were incomplete reviews. As I've explained in the previous FAC, the reason this article cites Souther a lot is because he's the only geologist to have studied the Mount Edziza volcanic complex in detail, not because the article isn't well-researched which is 1c of the featured article criteria. Most volcanoes in Canada are not well-studied due to their remote locations; Canada also doesn't have a lot of volcanologists."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:07, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

Creek versus River?
Hi, Volcanoguy. Your recent edits to both categories (e.g. :Category:Creeks of the Sierra Nevada (United States) ↗) and articles (e.g., Oak Creek Canyon ↗) appear to be making a distinction between creeks and rivers. Are you going purely by the name? I don't think there is any well-established technical distinction between the two types of flowing water bodies. Because of this, I'm unsure that "Creek"ness is a defining characteristic ↗ of these objects: would a creek almost always be referred to as a "creek" in reliable sources (outside the name), or would they also use "stream" or "river"? Something to consider. — hike395 (talk) 17:15, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
:Per stream ↗: "In Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States, a (narrow) stream that is smaller than a river; a minor tributary of a river; a brook." '''<i style="color: red;">Volcano</i><i style="color: black;">guy</i>''' 17:17, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
::That is the dictionary definition of creek, yes. But to create a category structure for creeks (versus streams or rivers), it needs to be a defining characteristic ↗ of the topic, see also WP:NONDEF ↗ and WP:DEFINING ↗. Because the distinction between creeks and rivers is blurry, using it as the basis of categorization is questionable. — hike395 (talk) 17:23, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
:That claim is backed by 5 sources in the article. '''<i style="color: red;">Volcano</i><i style="color: black;">guy</i>''' 17:24, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
::I'm not sure which claim you're referring to? I'm not disputing the dictionary definition. I'm trying to figure out whether "creek"ness is a defining characteristic of these kind of streams. — hike395 (talk) 17:26, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
:::I did find this discussion from 2016 ↗: before 2016, there were separate categories for "streams" and "rivers", and the consensus was to combine them. The discussion did consider the distinction between "streams" and "rivers". — hike395 (talk) 17:38, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
:::And here is a discussion from 2015 ↗ on a similar topic, that has links back to even older discussions in 2008 and 2011 at WT:WikiProject Rivers ↗.
:::Given that this was discussed (albeit a long time ago), I think it would be worthwhile to bring it up again, perhaps at WT:WikiProject Rivers ↗? — hike395 (talk) 17:48, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
::::I wasn't aware of those discussions. I've always found it strange how creeks are categorized with rivers since they don't exactly mean the same thing. '''<i style="color: red;">Volcano</i><i style="color: black;">guy</i>''' 17:49, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::I don't think it's unreasonable: imo, it's in the "grey zone" where it might be ok. But I suspect we need some centralized discussion. Would you like to start a discussion at WT:WikiProject Rivers ↗? Or should I? — hike395 (talk) 18:02, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::You can start the discussion at WT:WikiProject Rivers ↗ if you like. I should have started a discussion about this before I started creating categories for creeks, but without knowing about the previous discussions I didn't think it was a big deal. '''<i style="color: red;">Volcano</i><i style="color: black;">guy</i>''' 18:11, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::Upon reflection, I think it would be better to bring it up at CfD, because if people do want to merge it, we would have to go through the discussion twice. I'll figure out how to do a mass CfD and then notify WikiProject Rivers. — hike395 (talk) 01:38, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::If the creek categories were to be merged into the river categories I think there should be a discussion about whether or not the river categories should be renamed. ''Watercourse'' would be a great alternative to avoid the issue of brooks, creeks and streams not being rivers. It also avoids the English variant issue. :Category:Watercourses ↗ already exists as the parent category of :Category:Water streams ↗, which is a parent category of :Category:Rivers ↗ among others. '''<i style="color: red;">Volcano</i><i style="color: black;">guy</i>''' 02:12, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::OK. I think we need to workshop this a bit: I'll post something to WT:WikiProject Rivers ↗ and we'll see if we can get consensus about (a) whether to merge and (b) if so, what to merge it to. — hike395 (talk) 11:14, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
{{od|9}} The discussion at WT:RIVERS ↗ has died down a bit, and it appears that
:There's a clear consensus against "creek" categories, and
:There isn't (yet?) a clear consensus of what we should name the merged categories.
I have a suggestion: how about if I mark the "creeks" category discussion as a SNOW close ↗ and we revert your "creeks" splits of the "rivers" categories? If you would like, I can help with AWB.
It looks like the majority of editors want the "river" categories to be named something else, but it looks evenly split between "watercourses" and "rivers and streams". Perhaps we can go to CfD with one of them to get a wider view? or maybe you or someone else has a better idea of how to break the deadlock? — hike395 (talk) 05:39, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
:{{ping|hike395}} I've reverted all of my "creeks" splits of the "rivers" categories so you can SNOW close the discussion at WT:WikiProject Rivers. CfD sounds fine with me. '''<i style="color: red;">Volcano</i><i style="color: black;">guy</i>''' 23:15, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

Hi I'm just curious why you recategorized everything at :Category:Oxford Clay Formation ↗ as :Category:Oxford Clay ↗. Hello, Volcanoguy,
It looks like you are in the process of recategorizing articles and categories. Is this due to a discussion that occurred anywhere on the project? We discourage editors from emptying categories "out of process" rather than going through WP:CFD ↗ which is more suited for category renames, merges and deletions. Just thought I'd check in with you. :If there's an empty category that means it's no longer needed because I haven't renamed or merged any categories "out of process". The issue was that a lot of the geological eon, era, period and epoch categories were incorrectly categorized as part of geological formation ↗s as if geological formations are the only topic in geology that can be categorized by geological time. This isn't the case; many of the categories already had articles that had nothing to do with geological formations so I did some restructuring to the categories to solve this problem. Possible conflict of interest in editing of Douglas Lake Member article.
Hi, I just reverted what I judged to be edit that eliminated critisism ↗ of research by Greg Retallack in the Douglas Lake Member ↗ article, which you edited a number of times. The edit is by Retallack. I suspect that is a conflict of interest. Should I report it somewhere or simply note it on his talk page or in the comments? Paul H. (talk) 19:00, 19 November 2025 (UTC)

Thank you today for the article, "about one of the youngest volcanoes in Canada. According to legends of the local Nisga'a people, it caused 2,000 deaths and the destruction of at least three villages. This would make it the deadliest geological disaster in Canada and the second-worst natural disaster in Canadian history by death toll, succeeded only by the 1775 Newfoundland hurricane which caused at least 4,100 fatalities. Tseax Cone has therefore been described as the deadliest volcano in Canada."! - happy new year! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:01, 3 January 2026 (UTC)

Thank you today for the article "about one of the highest and most prominent volcanic peaks in Canada, as well as one of Canada's highest threat volcanoes. Like my previous FAC, Volcanism of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex, it cites Jack Souther a lot because he was the only geologist to have studied the mountain in detail. The mountain has received some studies by other scientists since 1992, but they are small in comparison. With that being said, there doesn't seem to be much data regarding the retreat of Mount Edziza's glaciers."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:38, 2 February 2026 (UTC)

Rubble Creek expanded
Heya! Just letting you know I put up an expanded Rubble Creek article. I didn't say too much about the geology, The Barrier, etc, figuring there are links to pages with a lot more info on that stuff. I'm sure the page can still be improved a lot, but hopefully is fine as it is now. Also, I don't understand the geology all that well, certainly not as well as you! I am a little unclear about the creek passing underground—where exactly that happens and whether there are full on subterranean channels or if it's more like chaotic streaming through rubble. So I didn't say too much about it and hopefully didn't get anything wrong.
Anyway, just letting you know. What an interesting area. I knew a little about The Barrier and the hazards, but there's so much more wild stuff I didn't know. Really makes me want to get back up there and hike up to The Barrier and Garibaldi Lake. The one time I was there we hiked only briefly to stretch our legs after driving all day (we drove from Blue River near Wells Grey to Squamish that day), so we didn't get to The Barrier. It was "the best mushroom season in years", according to a Pemberton local paper we saw, and OMG we saw so many weird mushrooms. We also stopped at Brandywine Falls. The falls was eye catching for sure, but we spent most of the time turned around looking into the forest and the insane profusion of weird mushrooms. It was a great trip :-) Pfly (talk) 21:19, 6 February 2026 (UTC)
:{{ping|Pfly}} See this ↗ source on page 264: {{green|Lava-flows from the western crater of Red Mountain}} (Mount Price) {{green|have filled Stony Creek valley}} (Rubble Creek valley) {{green|for a distance of about a mile and a half, and their surfaces are entirely unglaciated. The resultant damming of the creek has produced Garibaldi Lake, whose waters now find their outlet along a channel between the edge of the lava-flow and the northern wall of the valley until they reach a recess in the lava which forms the basin of Lesser Garibaldi Lake. From this point onward the stream follows a subterranean channel under the lava flow, beneath which it reappears at the foot of the cliff known as "the Barrier," which has been formed by the undercutting of the lower end of the lava-flow. At times of exceptionally high water, a part of the stream flows over the surface to Stony Lake}} (Barrier Lake){{green|, and thence over the Barrier into the lower valley.}} Since this is an old source, I decided to check the accuracy of the last claim using Google Earth. I didn't see a continuous flow of water from Barrier Lake into the lower valley so that claim probably still holds to this day. Congratulations, and thank you today for Eve Cone ↗, "about one of the most symmetrical and best-preserved cinder cones in Canada. It is also one of the youngest eruptive centres in the Desolation Lava Field, which is part of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex in northwestern British Columbia." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:16, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
Link to "elevation"
Please note that I use User:Ohconfucius/script/Common Terms.js to find Wikilinks to remove. That script wanted to remove the links to "British Columbia" and ''both'' links to "elevation". Instead I merely removed the second link per MOS:LINKONCE ↗. <span style="font-family: Cambria;"> <span style="color: teal;">'''Abductive'''</span> (reasoning)</span> 21:16, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
:I'm pretty sure things can be linked in both the introduction and the article body. '''<i style="color: red;">Volcano</i><i style="color: black;">guy</i>''' 23:39, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
Use of primary source
Unfortunately, the primary source used, the GVP subpage ↗, rounds all coordinates to the arcminute. For example, it gives Eve Cone ↗ as 57° 49' 0.00" N, 130° 40' 0.00" W which misses the cone. The coordinates for the Desolation Lava Field ↗ in that source also seem to point just outside the lava field, as depicted in the map in the article. Per precision table at WP:OPCOORD ↗, rounding to the tenth of a degree is called for. 57° 48′ N, 130° 36′ W is also 57.8° N, 130.6° W. <span style="font-family: Cambria;"> <span style="color: teal;">'''Abductive'''</span> (reasoning)</span> 21:56, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
:{{ping|Abductive}} Please see the coordinates for the Desolation Lava Field now, are they better? '''<i style="color: red;">Volcano</i><i style="color: black;">guy</i>''' 23:28, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
::Looks good. Thanks for your editing efforts. <span style="font-family: Cambria;"> <span style="color: teal;">'''Abductive'''</span> (reasoning)</span> 23:41, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
