Reflective essay - hacking Picasso
Lately I been trying to be like Picasso or being more brief on talk threads as recommended by Blue Sonnet. I got to admit I still have room for improvement. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Teahouse&diff=prev&oldid=1325738280 ↗https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Gaza_genocide&diff=prev&oldid=1325817821 ↗https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Borscht&diff=prev&oldid=1326112342 ↗
But I did notice a pattern. Example is in the past when it came to an ANI discussion on TW, I could feel the crowd moving against me when I am a mere messenger of an unpopular truth. Subconsciously I want to disengage from that as already feel it's a pointless discussion dealing with perceived political drama, while also need to explain why I am right to others.
But most overlong talk posts happen when I am doing two things at once:
- explaining why I am right
- also explaining why I am done talking
Doing both was always unnecessary and doubles the length.
To avoid this trap - I should follow a simple protocol - '''Decide first whether you want to persuade or disengage. Never try to do both.'''
If I want to disengage in the future, all I simply need to do is state only;
- What I have checked
- What my position is
- That I am done
For example in a recent Borscht talk thread, I def didn't do that but both disengaged, and also additionally explaining why I disengage and also why the article is not perfect lol.https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Borscht&diff=prev&oldid=1326112342 ↗
Can't change it now as it's been replied to, but what I should had done is simply say;
"<span style="color:green;">I have reviewed the archives. Given the ongoing contention around origins, I am fine with the current article and won't pursue this further"</span>
There's no need to add further, if you are done with that discussion, and moving on.
This is something I should had also done with key disputed talk threads too. If others for example - claim your edit is not supported by sources and you disagree. You can simply disengage and say you don't agree. You don't also need to explain why you don't agree, if the discussion has reached its productive end. Doing so - results in endless back and forth discussions that goes nowhere.
.
Whereas if you wish to persuade, drop everything about the politics, emotions, motivations etc but stick only to the sources. Then stop. There's no need for more than that, if it's clear. JaredMcKenzie (talk) 09:05, 7 December 2025 (UTC)

Close paraphrasing
Hiyas! I've just reviewed (and accepted) your article on Adaptive mountain biking ↗. Thank you for writing this, though I do have some concerns about close paraphrasing ↗ from your draft:
- {{tq|Adaptive mountain bikes (aMTB) are special type of mountain bikes adapted for those, who typically are not able to ride a standard mountain bike, and requires a special design to suit their physical, intellectual, neorololgical and sensory capacity}} is almost word-for-word copied from this source ↗.
- {{tq|Some are designed to be pedal powered for riders who have full or partial use of their legs. There is also types that have a hand crank alongside a throttle, and others that are fully motor-powered.}} is almost word-for-word copied from this source ↗.
- The list of the three types of rear-wheeled drives is closely parapgrased from the same source as previous ↗.
:Thanks Vermont. I appreciate you reviewing and approving, and cleaning up that article. I understand the flagged issue and will be more careful in summarising with my own words in future drafts.JaredMcKenzie (talk) 09:24, 17 December 2025 (UTC)

:Thanks for the advice. I do appreciate learning a new skill. I probably should at least try it once - <del>Btw I honestly don't know if I am right or wrong on this matter. It would be faster if one can simply find the video that shows Ross getting clipped. If you can find that, I be very grateful. I am only aware of one main cellphone video from Ross that has been widely circulated and verified by major news outlets like BBC. And for that video, they do not say anything about clipping. If not that video from Ross, and there's another - that shows definite impact with reasonable certainty - obviously a link to that video can help expedite the thread to a resolution.</del>
<ins>In regards to that viral 47‑second video, interestingly many media outlets talk about it. ''The Straits Times'' reported on that same video yet doesn't mention the agent got def hit either. https://www.straitstimes.com/world/united-states/new-video-emerges-of-minnesota-ice-shooting-further-inflaming-tensions ↗ I think when many reliable sources disagree on what this specific video shows, the article should then reflect that difference rather than treating one or a few interpretations as the only definitive one, especially when BBC and NPR explicitly contradict them. I have gone ahead and done this and hope the thread is now resolved. Thanks again.

:@Niafied <del>I really don't see how it doesn't meet the Org criteria. There's too many Bloomberg and Financial Times articles constantly reporting on the company multiple times annually. Note the company owns numerous widely recognized brands such as Ugly Stik ↗ and Penn Reels ↗, which shows just how immense this giant corporation is in scale. Other big fishing brand companies don't have that scale in owning so many top brands. ''Independent sources, including Bloomberg reported that Pure Fishing, Inc. completed a significant $750 million refinancing deal in October 2024''https://news.bloomberglaw.com/bankruptcy-law/monarch-silver-point-lead-private-debt-for-fishing-retailer ↗ which speaks to the company's significance in the markets. Dedicated industry research reports list them as among global "Top Fishing Tackle Companies" alongside Abu Garcia ↗ - (which is actually another major brand it owns) - https://www.marketgrowthreports.com/market-reports/fishing-tackle-market-113225 ↗ Given they are likely the largest tackle company in the world if you add all their portfolio altogether and the coverage of their deals in RS, Pure Fishing meets the criteria for inclusion under WP:GNG.</ins>JaredMcKenzie (talk) 02:50, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

Editing your own comments
Hello JaredMcKenzie,
I've stumbled across your comments in several places and they tend to be confusing and uncomfortable to read. If you edit your comments shortly after you post them, you don't have to use <del>del</del> nor <ins>ins</ins>, you should just edit it as if it was posted like that in the first place. They are intended for editing your comments after someone responded or after a long time has passed. If time has passed and you have changed your mind about something, I suggest adding another comment rather than editing your old one. And if you must edit and there is a lot of text to be added, I suggest that instead of using <ins>ins</ins> you instead say that the part has been added later. Also note that if you edit your comment after a long time, you can indicate when the edit was made (by using five wave signs). See Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines § Editing own comments ↗.
Best, NorthernWinds (talk) 15:05, 8 February 2026 (UTC)
:Which comments specifically? But thanks for the memo. Ironically I don't like adding (ins) and (del). But another told me above that it's best practises if I wanted to edit my own comment. It's a bit of a nuisance as I preferred to just outright delete the old unwanted parts instead of adding del tags to it. I would agree of nobody has responded or the changes isn't all that different to the core message, then it's good to know I don't need to resort to that. JaredMcKenzie (talk) 23:02, 8 February 2026 (UTC)
::I didn't comment here because of it but see this one ↗ for example. There is too much underline, making it unnecesarily uncomfortable to read. NorthernWinds (talk) 23:09, 8 February 2026 (UTC)

Particularly, their main point of disagreement is their insistence that a piece covering a 750 million dollar refinancing deal demonstrates notability - which it categorically does not. ↗ My advice to the author; if you want a chance for this to be accepted, ''listen to what people are telling you'' and trim the article down to ''only'' include information which can be verified by sources which meet the golden rule. ↗ You can always re-include the more minor information later if the article is accepted. :Jared, don't forget about this! ↗ Sometimes less is more. Blue Sonnet (talk) 15:50, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
::@Athanelar Wasn't that hard headed when I did follow the advice from one of the editors. They advised my best bet was on fishing tackle trade publications as they know their industry. So I altered my draft to heavily include fishing tackle industry publications to establish notability. They are not routine reporting but dedicated story like articles on the company + impact on the global industry. For WP:ORGCRIT, Wikipedia does not require only general-interest media like Bloomberg. Industry trade publications should qualify if they are not connected and staff written. For reviewers, I made it easy for you. Literally the first paragraph in the lede was there too establish notability thru fishing tackle industry publications. JaredMcKenzie (talk) 23:28, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
:::To quote WP:TRADES ↗, {{tq|Trade publications must be used with great care. While feature stories from leading trade magazines may be used where independence is clear, '''there is a presumption against the use of coverage in trade magazines to establish notability.'''}} Athanelar (talk) 23:36, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
::::Pure Fishing brands have been widely described in numerous fishing-industry publications as among the most widely used and influential in recreational and sport fishing. That is a true fact. I also have market research reportshttps://www.intelmarketresearch.com/sports-fishing-equipment-market-15391#:~:text=The%20global%20Sports%20Fishing%20Equipment%20market%20is%20characterized%20by%20a,Europe,%20and%20Asia-Pacific ↗ confirming this as a fact. I even have Goldman Sachs and MOODY'S analysts as RS that can confirm the company really does have strong international impact.https://web.archive.org/web/20130907211847/https://www.marketwatch.com/story/jarden-to-acquire-pure-fishing-for-300-million ↗https://finance.yahoo.com/news/sp-pf-buyer-llc-moodys-190011048.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAG1vvGB9I005mgSIIdTbiuLQ5i84OUc6lp21ykHhfInPdF67wseHCwO4EHoYfz7lTwouMQDfIbb9oy8HKfqmjpglgr8J3zKdh63USFSBzz75jExhTiDpEziAMUruiwXlauzsISeMkbYp-nk5vgWh7PO8iZK7UWY3e0IINTvQy9C_ ↗ So this presumption can be challenged esp when my sources are proven to not lie and are industry-recognised, and not a house blog. The policy doesn't say trade publications don't count. Rather that specific sources and info - needs to be evaluated. JaredMcKenzie (talk) 23:58, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
:::::Hey again Jared, I hope you don't mind me butting in with a story that just came to my mind. It's a bit long so apologies in advance, but that's kind of the point with this one!
:::::So, I was at work yesterday replying to an email we had from a customer who was really confused about something - it was going to become a complaint if it wasn't sorted out properly.
:::::I decided that the most efficient thing to do was to reply via email to explain things clearly to him.
:::::He asked about two or three things, so I knuckled down and addressed each point, one-by-one.
:::::I then thought it'd be helpful to find a digital copy of his documents, so he could refer to them on the same email.
:::::Then, I figured I should quote the relevent sections in my message and give page numbers, since that'd be even quicker.
:::::I even came across a couple of things that he was unhappy about on previous emails which hadn't been properly addressed before, so I wrote about those issues as well.
:::::After a while, one of my colleagues sent me a message to ask what I'd been doing for the past hour - I stepped back and realised that I'd written a dozen paragraphs in response to his three! My colleague then asked why I didn't just call him instead.
:::::''I forgot.''
:::::I got so hyper-fixated on the email that I genuinely didn't even think about ''just picking up the damn phone''.
:::::I now had to decide what was better for the customer - twelve paragraphs of text and two attachments, or a ten minute phonecall.
:::::If I make the call, I have to delete the email I worked so hard on, sacrificing an entire hour's work. I had to think of what was best for my customer, not what was best for me. That wasn't easy and all my instincts were screaming at me to just get it over with and click Send!
:::::I didn't do that. I'm ''glad'' I didn't.
:::::Instead, I deleted the email and the call lasted seven minutes in total. Most importantly, the customer was happy because this was the quickest, clearest and most efficient way of communication.
:::::I '''know''' you worked really hard on that article, but is it possible that you might have hyper-fixated on that source in the same way that I lost myself in that email? I've not read it so this is just a question I'd like you to honestly ask yourself (don't write your answer here, this is just purely for you as part of your own personal development, if you want).
::::: Whatever the answer is, make sure you never lose sight of what's best for your customer (Wikipedia and its readers).
:::::Take a step back, come back to this in a day or two with fresh eyes and ask whether you might need to sacrifice some of the article for the greater good.
:::::You might think it's totally fine and doesn't need changing, in which case Wikipedia:TRADES ↗ suggests asking for advice at the Reliable sources noticeboard ↗ - those editors know a lot about proper sourcing & will be able to help you.
:::::Just make sure you promise yourself in advance that you'll stick by whatever the outcome is - no matter how you feel about it afterwards - ok? Blue Sonnet (talk) 01:07, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
::::::@Blue-Sonnet Unfortunately I made a promise. I have to keep my word. I could try to prove that fishing tackle trade publications (read by niche group) is a RS by also presenting 2 reputable market analysts (Goldman Sachs + MOODY'S) verifying most of the info as facts. But I also hastily said that if my article is rejected again for notability reasons, I will not re-submit. I may not agree with Athanelar and suspect they either presumed or ignored the fishing industry publications despite they may be wrong. But I am not someone who should make exceptions for myself. Thanks for your sincere advice. I appreciate it but decided to let this one go, but only wanted to comment to tell reviewers to be thorough and ensure I have fuller understanding. That's all. :) JaredMcKenzie (talk) 01:22, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
:::::::Ah ok, that makes sense - sorry I missed the part about not resubmitting, at least you got to read a very-slightly-interesting-but-not-really-interesting story I guess! Blue Sonnet (talk) 01:27, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
::::::::@Blue-Sonnet When you say ''very-slightly-interesting-but-not-really-interesting story'' - I think I misread - were you were talking about your own story? I think I get the gist now and can relate - it's human to want to save a loss esp after getting hyper-focused on details and losing the bigger picture but it shouldn't get in the way of doing things the right way. I'll keep that in mind. Though for this draft, I spent too much time on it. I don't want to work on it further and its final version is at least suitable for me. For future drafts, I'll try to keep the focus on what's most useful for general wiki readers.JaredMcKenzie (talk) 08:12, 28 February 2026 (UTC)

April 2026
Why are you reverting, as you did here ↗, without reading or engaging in the talk page discussion? The discussion on the talk page ↗ specifically states that "it is misleading to claim the Iranian-American community as a whole has opposed the strikes since it is just one Iranian-American organization that has opposed them", and, per another editor, what can be written is "some/many in the Iranian-American community" etc. per the WP:RS ↗ for context. "Not being an anti-war protest" doesn't mean the counter-protests are undue; please see WP:DUE ↗. Ronnnaldo7 (talk) 02:42, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
:You were bold and you were reverted. Your first error was to give an ambiguous impression that a majority of Iranian diaspora support the war. But your own given source doesn't say this and instead writes "some" in Iranian diaspora. So I reverted it as it's unsourced. More importantly, the article is about "protests '''against''' the war". Should we add in input from MAGA and Zionists supporting the war despite that is not within the article's intended scope? No, we don't add it in for WP: FALSE BALANCE and drown out the actual antiwar protests. You are free to add that same info to a more broader article covering all reactions to Iran war. JaredMcKenzie (talk) 03:04, 5 April 2026 (UTC)

Introduction to contentious topics
{{ivmbox | image = Commons-emblem-notice.svg |imagesize=50px | bg = #E5F8FF | text = You have recently edited a page related to ''' living or recently deceased subjects of biographical content on Wikipedia articles''', a topic designated as '''''contentious ↗'''''. A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as ''contentious topics''. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee ↗. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators ↗ have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit <strong>carefully and constructively</strong>, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines ↗;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practices;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and

That's not a small detail, given they were first hand witnesses, but one that's noteworthy and true. What possible good reason would you have to remove that from the lede? JaredMcKenzie (talk) 03:25, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
::We don't need to cram every single last detail into the lead. Parts of the lead will probably need trims in the future to accomodate detail about the arrest, charges and likely trial. :::@TarnishedPath I know the policy. It's not denied by anyone that over 20 SAS soldiers testified against him so it can't violate WP:Blp. It's his own unit giving proof and not some foreign strangers. This makes it important enough context for readers sake and frankly I see it as an improvement to add in -"'''More than 20 current and former SAS soldiers gave evidence in the defamation trial, alleging Roberts-Smith’s involvement in unlawful killings'''." Such details do not imply criminal guilt, but rather accurately reflect that the evidence included testimony from members of his own unit, which is a ''significant and distinguishing feature of the proceedings'' and doesn't violate WP:BLP. And it is due weight considering both historical importance (first time in history this has ever occured in Australia that Sas soldiers testified against a peer) and the prominence of this aspect in RS. JaredMcKenzie (talk) 03:56, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
::::Per the guideline, the job of the lead is to {{tq|summarize the most important points}} from the article. That sentence you wanted to add into the lead isn't even in the body. Add it, or something like it, to the body if you like (I'd suggest at the start of the 4th para in the '''Defamation suit''' section), but adding it to the lead was going into unneeded detail for the lead. ''<b style="color:#ff0000;">Tar</b><b style="color:#ff7070;">nis</b><b style="color:#ffa0a0;">hed</b><b style="color:#420000;">Path</b>''<b style="color:#bd4004;"><u>talk</u></b> 04:27, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
:::::Yeah what's up with that? It's 2026 and it's been 4 years since the 2022 trial. How was that not added to the body already? Regardless I added the witnesses to the body and detailed how over 20 of those witnesses were also SAS soldiers, both former and current by the time of the trial. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ben_Roberts-Smith&diff=prev&oldid=1347516538 ↗ But I believe it should also be mentioned in the lede for reasons I already outlined above. JaredMcKenzie (talk) 04:52, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
::::::It's probably best to contain this entire discussion to the article's talk, so that anyone else can provide input if they want. I see you have semi-retired from editing because it's emotionally taxing. With experience, it will be little less emotionally taxing. I'm learning not to take it too seriously - whatever happens here, Wiki is not your life. <span style="font-variant:small-caps; font-weight:800; background:linear-gradient(90deg,#FF0018,#FFA52C,#FFDD00,#008018,#0000F9,#86007D); -webkit-background-clip:text; -webkit-text-fill-color:transparent; "> 🐈Cinaroot </span> 18:03, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
:Seconded - the moment it gets stressful, it's a sign to step back. Do something simple like typo fixes if you still want to help out with minimum stress (check out the Wikipedia:Typo Team ↗), but if editing Wikipedia feels unpleasant then that's a sign to stop.

::@Blue-Sonnet@Cinaroot Thank you both for your kind message. I really appreciate the thoughtful reminder that it does not have to be all-or-nothing. :::Glad we were able to help! Remember that Wikipedia is just a hobby, like any hobby it should be fun & relaxing. If it's not fun & relaxing, take it as an opportunity to try something new!

::::Thanks for the advice. I generally find Wikipedia editing to be enjoyable esp when that topic is within my interests so usually it's a positive and engaging activity for me.https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Shark_attack&oldid=prev&diff=1353765196&markasread=347656219&markasreadwiki=enwiki ↗ Some topics can be more challenging cuz they touch on heavier stuff and can feel mentally demanding. I'm still learning how to manage that balance better with experience. I am also quite active on Wikimedia Commons, which I have found to be consistently enjoyable. For example, I contribute images to articles such as shark-related topics - https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Shark_attacks_in_Australia&diff=prev&oldid=1353771439 ↗. 🙂 JaredMcKenzie (talk) 08:47, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
:::::I have found your perspectives and opinions valuable. And you have remained neutral in the edits to articles I have seen. There are going to be editors who push your buttons. I became active on Wikipedia after Oct 7 attacks - because I felt compelled to edit. I'm proud to have made some valuable contributions. I think one of my biggest contributions was helping get UNWRA ↗ to share images related to the Gaza war. The images you see on the Gaza genocide article are there because I, together with someone from Wikimedia, was able to work with UNWRA and obtain hundreds of photos from the UN. But it’s not without conflicts and stress. I still struggle sometimes. But it is much better than before. To me - its more of a job and less of a hobby when I edit in WP:CT ↗ Hopefully, you can continue to edit in whatever capacity you like. <span style="font-variant:small-caps; font-weight:800; background:linear-gradient(90deg,#FF0018,#FFA52C,#FFDD00,#008018,#0000F9,#86007D); -webkit-background-clip:text; -webkit-text-fill-color:transparent; "> 🐈Cinaroot </span> 05:23, 13 May 2026 (UTC)

Advice
Hi JaredMcKenzie - I would like to share some thoughts as a follow-up to my earlier post. If an editor is making a personal attack or focusing on you rather than the content - it’s best to ignore or ask them to be cautious and flag it on their talk page if needed.
You are always welcome to disengage if you have made your point and the other party is going off-topic and/ or if you feel like they haven’t made a strong or policy-complaint argument. An uninvolved closer could close the discussion and determine consensus. <span style="font-variant:small-caps; font-weight:800; background:linear-gradient(90deg,#FF0018,#FFA52C,#FFDD00,#008018,#0000F9,#86007D); -webkit-background-clip:text; -webkit-text-fill-color:transparent; "> 🐈Cinaroot </span> 09:51, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
